Good, useful video. Text messaging is a convenient way to communicate, but there are definitely some annoying aspects. One of the things that irritates me is when you get into a long back-and-forth exchange. Texts are great for a quick question and reply, or to set up a meeting, etc. Once you go back and forth 3 or 4 times, now it’s a conversation. Just call and talk to the person.
@Gent.ZАй бұрын
I agree
@pensivepenguin3000Ай бұрын
This is so true of work interactions, too. Once you’ve exchanged a few messages on Slack or Teams, it’s time to just pick up the phone or put on the headset, whatever the case may be

Great advice overall. This is an area that is increasingly common as we communicate more and more via our phones and short messaging means, and an area where bad (ungentlemanly) behaviors can get ingrained early and quickly. I disagree though on "read receipts". I have mine on because sometimes the notice itself is my reply and nothing more is needed. For example if I give someone a piece of information and they reply (politely) that they received it or thank me for it, I do not need to reply again to confirm that I got their confirmation. They can see that I saw it and the chain should end politely there. Similarly with messages like "on my way". I want them to know that I received it without needing the clutter of an additional OK message.

My girlfriend and I keep read receipts on exclusively for each other as we both have a tendency of thinking we sent a response when we didn’t. We use it as a reminder but also acknowledge that it is a reminder.
@Gent.ZАй бұрын
@@A_Fellow_Man as I said, each contact in your phone has its own texting etiquette. I think it’s great that you and your girlfriend have established this as a way of communicating. Very open and mature.
@pensivepenguin3000Ай бұрын
I mostly agree with this, though I think it could be taken too far. Texting is an inherently casual and conversational form of communication, so I don’t think there’s any societal expectation that one uses the same level of formality he might in an email, written letter or other more formal mode of communication. I think as long as you aren’t sounding like a 14-year-old girl, you’re probably doing OK. I’ve tried to dial down the lol’s and emojis, but I still use them when they’re appropriate 😀
@Gent.ZАй бұрын
As you say, to avoid texting like a 14-year-old girl is the most important thing. My style of texting is perhaps more blunt and formal than most people's, but that also reflects my personality.
@lordtherapeuticsАй бұрын
Read receipts are useful in that someone can see that you haven't responded for 6 hours because you haven't had chance to look at your phone for 6 hours, not because you are rude or trying to convey a brush-off. Some of us have busy jobs.

I’ve always had Read Receipts on. But from now on, I’ll keep it off. I’ve always felt pressured to keep it on. I was even asked why it was off by someone years ago, thus I turned it on back then. I’ll now do what I want, and not what others want of me. Always wanted to turn it off. Now I have a reason. I also have a question, what about typing indicators? I find them annoying when I see them. “Come on, get on with it!” But does a gentleman have typing indicators on for himself?
@Gent.ZАй бұрын
Personally, I leave typing indicators on. But if you want to turn them off, I don’t think that is in any way rude.
@pensivepenguin3000Ай бұрын
Oh man. That is the first thing I do when I get a new work laptop or a new phone - turn off the stupid read receipts. I wonder who the individual is who ever thought that would be a good feature
@pensivepenguin3000Ай бұрын
Just be careful, guys. It’s possible to come off as stuffy, eccentric and out of touch if you use an excessively structured and formal writing style in inherently casual forms of communication like texting. This would be a kin to wearing a three-piece suit to McDonald’s. But by all means, if you’re OK seeming like the strange eccentric guy, go for it :)

I disagree about responding within 2 hours to texts. I think you should have put a disclaimer on responding to text messages quickly. I’m currently writing a novel from home and need up to five hours at a time to focus on my novel, not withstanding when people are working. If you are at work, and the text message is not work related, there is no issue waiting until you are no longer working to respond to messages.

Here's something women use as a test: If they are into you, they will text you late (9-12pm). If you like her, text her back. If not, wait until tomorrow. The rules are different in the wee hours, however. Early a.m. is drunk time, and unless she is your lady (or you are just THAT thirsty)- ignore those.
