I'm a male who cuts my own unit, and I've never seen the "twisting hair" technique! But it makes soooo much sense! Thank you for sharing that! Also, I like the way you were very descriptive about protecting the base of the unit, and making sure they used the blank/dull side of the sheers, and then bending it over. Very nice! The explanation of "why" you don't cut the very top part of the hair was also well explained... Overall, I agree with a lot of comments here! this is probably the BEST informative video on how best to use thinning sheers! Thank you for sharing!

Love the rich chestnut color and the shag style but it has WAY too much hair and, on me, has what I think is a sort of wiggish-football-helmet look. I had a $300 wig, a Jon Renu 'Alia' that is parted in the middle which doesn't look good on me anymore, it's been in its box for the two years that I've had it and your fine instructions, after watching several times, gave me the confidence to do it. Done and it came out perfectly!!! It has a mono top and a lace front, after the cut, the bangs fell nicely into place. Wish I could post a picture. Of course I'm very happy with the results! A well done video, thanks. I DO have one sort of technical question. Why is it important to have the flat part of scissors on top AND why do you pull the hair up & over the scissors? I'm almost ready to try this but it's a little scary too.

Hi Trish, Having the flat part of the scissor on top will remove the lower portion of the hair you are cutting which is what you want. The reason you pull a section up and then grab a section just underneath is so you don't end up with any hairs sticking straight up or shorter hairs visible from thinning. This will allow you to see the wig as lighter and thinner but no layering.

Great video! Gives me hope for the bulky poofy wig I bought! Thanks for the video! Does this thinning technique help with the poofy look that perma teased hair gives or will the remaining hair still be poofy? I'm wondering if I will still have to work with a warm hair dryer and a spray bottle of water to tame the perma-teased hair after I thin it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Dottie, it sounds like you have a full on poofy wig, and just like a wig that's too thick(not ours) it doesn't matter how much you thin, it will still look like a thick wig. I would chock this wig up to the learning curve and use it as a tester for future things you want to try on a wig. Hi Elk, funny, we both do this a little differently; Dani flips the hair so the smooth side of the shears is right against the scalp of the wig. I keep my smooth side of the shears on the bottom to slide against the hair. the main point is to have a clean line and move away any of the hair that's not being thinned. Hi Linda, Sorry, we do not have a specific video showing how to trim a side bang. Keep in mind that you can keep the bangs longer which will allow you to push the bangs to the side. We suggest having your wig trimmed by a hair dresser if you are looking for a very specific look. :)

Basic costs; nothing too expensive...I do keep scissors for only my human hair and different ones for cutting synthetic hair since the synthetic fiber is harder on the blades; yet I've never had to replace them! I suggest the thinning shears that 1. Have a smooth blade on one side and notches on the other side. 2. The thinnest teeth you see. Start out taking thin amounts of hair and it's also good to test on the lower part of the wig underneath the other hair to see how you like it. Take your time and you can do it! Remember that it's with thinning shears. Also, never work on the top area of a wig. If you turn the wig upside down, you'll see a "U" shape - that's where you DON'T want to thin. Thin under that, where you see the open wefts. I tried your method which works very well however I accidentally cut a small piece out of the monofilament top. Luckily it was way on the side where I won't be parting the wig. Just to let others know that you can get too close as I did and cut too deeply. I sewed it at the ends & across the tear hoping it will keep the cut from raveling. Do you have any suggestions other than sewing that might work better. Maybe a tiny bit of some sort of glue? I have some no fray fabric glue, would that work? Thank you for your response.

Hi Vivian, learning something new can be a little scary, but please read the reviews of all the viewers that this video did help. Also, when we say th "flat part" of the scissor, that really means the "smooth" side, versus the other arm of the scissor that has the notches in it. And, you can always visit a local hairdresser to thin the wig. And, please try just flattening it with your hands and work a little more so the wig starts to go the way YOU want it. It’s just that after I really looked at the video a few times I noticed that the shears in the video have teeth only on one side and the one that was sent to me has teeth on both sides. But since that’s an old video maybe now you changed the shears but that’s fine. After I checked it out I am gonna buy the right type of shears on Amazon and I will follow your video to thin out the wig. I’ve seen different sizes in sheers does that make a difference? I’m wanting to thin a really long and curly wig. Does the size thinning sheer matter? ie 6.5 or 7 inch etc?

What matters more is the size of the teeth. I prefer the smallest space between the "teeth" to it thins a smaller amount of hair vs. bigger space removes more hair. Question- I’ve watched this video a few times, got brave, and ordered some shears from you. The ones I got do not have the straight side. How do I thin with these shears? Does it matter which side is next to the base when cutting? Help!

Hi Renee, please do NOT use regular scissors to thin a wig. Thinning shears are scissors that have teeth or notches on one side, while the other side is a smooth blade.
