Chris, I have to tell you... as much as I love youtube because of all of the tutorials.... it is normally soooooooo frustrating. Most people, (while I thank them for their time), are panting in the camera, giving unclear directions, and just waste time :/ This is the most clear, obvious, helpful tutorial I have seen. Thanks for watching! Yes home sewing machines in general, as long as the stitch tension is correct, they can definitely make real clothing!! Now to be honest I've always been skeptical about whether clothing you make can really stand up to real life but so far i haven't had any problems. Now if you're someone who is really rough on the clothing you make, i recommend an industrial grade machine.
