Since discovering your videos I have tackled 6 different sewing machines with thread "issues". The BEST one was a woman who was going to THROW OUT her machine because she said it was MAJORLY JAMMED and the hand wheel would NOT BUDGE.So, I went there, she only wanted $15 to avoid THROWING it OUT, took it home and in 25 minutes I had a Brother VX-1120 that WORKS LIKE NEW! Some kind of gooey substance was ALL around the bobbin case and had to be PRIED off GENTLY in order to get all the goo off! But now it went from being a $15 possible piece of trash to an Over $100 Value Piece of TREASURE! Your videos gave me that "little push" I needed to get over my fear I would "break it", AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

1) Make sure your top thread is threaded with the pressure foot in the UP position. I was never taught this, and I know a lot of people weren't. Realizing this has prevented 90% of my intermittent "birds nest" problems. I didn't know the pressure foot and tension discs work on the same mechanism. Lifting the foot opens up the tension discs so the thread can fit between, putting the foot back down closes the discs. Learning this one simple silly thing has saved so many projects.

I've been sewing for 60 years (since I was 10) and am very impressed with the way you handled these issues. You wouldn't happen to be a travelling repairman, would you? There are only two in my city of almost 1 million and neither of them, unfortunately, are very good at what they do. Sign of the times, I suppose. What you did in your video would have cost $150.00 for each issue. Judging from the comments, you've help an awful lot of people with their machines!! Thank you and Take care!!

25 years ago I cpukd buy a cheap machine for a £100. And it would suffer none of these issues & go through thick fabrics with ease. That was the last of good machinery. Kids broke that. Ever since all machines & overlockers that would come out after. Woukd all have constant issues. Knotting up. Eating fabrics. Not hemming. Just awful. More money for nightmares. It literally took all the Joy out of sewing. I noticed I enjoyed sewing 25 years ago. Years later & the thought of it was just dread. A fail everytime for no reason.

I have taken my machine apart... cleaned the bobbin housing..which wasn't really that dirty... checked the timing... replaced the needle... and bobbin.. Then I saw this video. OMG the only thing that was wrong was that my thread was not hooked over the thread arm... Wow..

Now I know why so many people love vintage sewing machines. Metal vs plastic. True, you can have the same thread bunching, but the worst that happens is a broken needle, and fun time digging out the thread. Great 👍 tutorial

I learned to sew on a machine my grandmother had that was powered solely by foot power. I never had a problem like was described in this video while sewing on that machine. Facts this is what I keep saying. Vintage everything is better!!. Last of the good machines were luke 24 years ago.. After that they've all been a nightmare including the hemmers. It's same with hoovers , washers, dryers, last century things were built to last forever. Now we get things that are faulty from the get go.. I bought a kirby hoover that's like from 70s/80s & it's suction is amazing!!! It's that strong u need 2 hands lol

Until I found your video. After watching your video I looked at my machine again “carefully “ and there it was a needle mark. After filing it smooth. Voila it’s works. I’m still staggered how a needle mark can cause this problem. Note to self don’t try to force your machine do what they don’t want to do. Thank you so much. Se safe and healthy 😉

I inherited my mothers Singer 1918. I have done a lot of sewing in the past but that was on a very old industrial machine (I made things like motorbike saddles, car upholstery (Not commercial) It was not used in a long time but still as new. I fixed some trousers and after a while the looping started. After watching some of your video I cleaned the machine, opened everything and greased / oiled everything. Now it is much more silent, smoother and not a single loop anymore. Thanks for your videos. It works fine but it is all a bit flimsy and not much room under the pressure foot. That industrial machine was build like a tank, you could feed it everything you want. But the 9018 is a lot more handy to mend clothes.

That helped me so much! I have been sewing for years. However, I stopped after my (Marine)fiancée passed away from drugs 10 years ago. Our son was devastated. I got very sick TWICE from Covid and lost 90 pounds. I don't have the money to buy new clothes, so I am making my jeans and shorts much thinner with a simple straight hem. Sadly, I have to cut off the pockets. I will save a lot of money I don't have . I feel privileged to have my Singer and am always able to fix anything I am taught. DIY is very satisfying. Dear Sir, I cannot thank you enough. I have been sewing for a few years, and 'normally' I have solved 'birds nests' by retreading the machine. Occasionally, the thread had come out of the tension slot. This time, I was beginning to go insane, and was prepared to throw the machine out (not really!) You are the first person to mention the bobbin case. I took it out. Yes, it was scratched, a little, but more troublesome were the three needle holes. I ordered a new bobbin case, and so far, it's like I have a brand new machine. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
@evelynr7069

Another top threading issue, is when you try to thread the machine with the presser foot down. This closes the tension disks making the machine ready to sew, but if the tension disks are closed when you do your threading, the thread misses the tension assembly even though you may have passed it down past there correctly.

Cleared out bobbin, then oiled and dusted down around, changed the needle, then I took everything apart to tighten the bobbin cash-out all back together, but still had an issue- but the case didn't rattle around- I pulled the threading out for rereading- which for finally solved the problem, I just couldn't see that the threading jumped out of place.

@@kathyechano9109Could be a couple of issues. First check your bobbin casing area for any dust or fluff particles as anything that finds it sway to wrap around that area will slow it down. Is it slow ALL the time or sometimes? If your motor sounds like it is struggling I would first suggest give the insides of it a thorough vacuum and if you have NOT given it any maintenance for a while a good cleaning and fresh sewing machine oil on all the elbow joints is warranted. Also, if you have NEVER had the gears checked that is a MUST because those gears MUST have a goo fresh coat of synthetic gear grease to allow it to move smoothly. I cant remember if I have a video on machine maintenance and what to look for when your machine starts slowing down. If I do I will send you that link, if I "don't" I am DEFINITELY making one! I always have a new foot pedal (minus the wiring) that I can attach to a machine like that to see if it is just the foot pedal getting old} a lot of times the contacts inside foot pedals loosen over time and all is needed is to open it up and tighten them back down. I will check on that video of mine and get back with you! Thank you for reaching out!

I believe our Singer 530a is locked up. Cleaned 🪥 out, oiled in place of joints... lifted the bobbin and the wheel on the side to help get it started and press on the foot pedal needle will not drop (like it's stuck) at all, it is electric when apply pressure on the foot pedal or leg lever up by the knee for not having to use the foot pedal it still will not budge. Listening for motor sound that you can hear there's energy. Can't figure it out please help- Thank you!
@sewwhatseamstress9076
@sewwhatseamstress9076 10 ай бұрын
@@Tashvaldez If when pressing the foot or knee pedal lever, needle not moving, the problem could be a couple of things. Make sure that the bobbin winder is NOT ENGAGED. I am assuming that the hand wheel does not move when you are applying pressure to the foot pedal, so it could be that the lug motor belt needs to be replaced. Another problem could be that the "brushes" inside the motor have worn down and you would need to replace them to ensure a complete circuit of electrical contact.

This video has been an eye opener for me. Didn't think about how to find out if the problem was the upper or lower thread until now. Thank you! It is most frustrating with intermittent occuring errors. My maschine can work one minute as it should and after just turning the fabric, everything goes just wrong and I have a birds nest behind the bobbin. Now I have tested to make button holes, but neither of the programs work. I will try again now, but use different colours on the upper and lower thread, because it's not only that the button hole programs doesn't make button holes, I get a birds nest also. But now I know the importance of using different colours while trouble shooting! Thank you!!!

Excellent video, sir! I'm going to give my old Featherweight another try but take the bobbin case holder out this time and check for burrs from needle strikes. I use my Dremel tool to buff out those burrs. First thing I always try is changing the needle and that fixes the issue at least half the time. I use good needles (schmetz) and buy them by the gross. There are no fabric stores within 30 miles of me, so I hate having to stop a project for common supplies. You've done a great job explaining this, and your videography is wonderfully clear and so helpful! THANK YOU!

Sonia, I know most of us sew till we drop so I made it a habit when i first bought a machine and taught myself to sew that every time I sat down to begin a session of sewing, I thoroughly and carefully cleaned out my machine. I clean in every space my brush can go and run it down the upper thread guides too. So much can go wrong from a tiny piece of lint or a tiny thread caught somewhere it shouldn't be. Happy sewing!

Oh wowwwww. Congratulations 🏆🏆🏆 Very helpful and I truly APPRECIATE your kindness. That was my case. The worst part of it was that the little knob on the bobine holder of my BROTHER COMPAL SOVEREIGN, B R.O K E and I got pretty scared. The thread wasn't going fluidly but got tangled over the bobine and I heard a big jam. Too late. The damage was DONE. I compared my bobines and found my error. In my opinion I think it was because I accidentally put in an ordinary cheap bobine which wasn't meant for my Brother Machine. I've been using my machine since 1990 with the authentic bobine provided. One mistake and distraction and the machine is damaged. Thanks a million for your help. Thanks for sharing caring and making me smile.👍👍👍👍❤️🌹A big hug from your fan in France.

Awesome content! Great camera angles. I learned troubleshooting this the hard way as a teenager, with no teacher, no internet & a desperate need to alter or mend something. For years I practically hated sewing until I learned much more, thanks to practice and the internet. My elderly friend had the 2nd issue exactly with her top loaded bobbin machine (mine is front loaded). Thankfully she was able to get the bobbin holder replaced. 2 thumbs up and thanks for sharing.

I have the singer 9960 and had problems w the bobbin case when it was new. There was a slight wobble in it. Turned out the bobbin case had pokes in it wh was catching the thread. The best price I could get on a replacement case for that machine was $99 USD. The machine from Amazon was only $329+tax brand new! The new case was rubber whereas the original was plastic. After I replaced it, no problem and the machine was well used for 8+ yrs now. I guess manufacturers use cheaper parts to keep the cost down but nobody sold the cheap bobbin case as a replacement.🙋

Thank you so much. I have a much loved 30 yr old Husqvarna Prisma 990 which had a rats nest under the stitch plate. Following your video. We removed a tiny burr from the plastic bobbin case plate and it now is like new again.

Great video. I didn't know about the needle strikes. I'm not sure I have any plastic on my bobbin case, but if I ever have that rat' s nest problem, I'll be sure to look!I've found that sometimes I need to change the brand, type and/ or needle size, or even the weight or thread content. Also using Bottom Line brand thread for the bobbin is a life changer if you can find it. I liked the comment about getting any lint out of the bobbin case. Can also be a tension setting problem, of course. I have a Janome 6500 and it's like any thoroughbred. Everything has to be just right before the race. I've had it for years and love it. Thank you again for your expertise. I'll be back!!!

Amazing tutorial Sir. I learned so much and I am teaching my daughter to sew and can teach her how important knowing the mechanism of the machine is to the sewing itself. I have had this happen and did not know how I fixed it, so probably by chance re threaded the machine properly. Thank you very much.

It fixed our problem!!! I hadn't even looked at the top thread catch. That was my problem and I didn't pull the thread past the latch when I loaded the thread. The bobbin was never the issue but I reloaded 3 bobbins before seeing your video
