The only thing I would add is to correct one thing. The wheel with the red rim determines the stitch length. The higher the number the longer the stitch. I usually use it on 2 1/2. If you needed a gathering stitch, it would need to be much longer

I took a look at my mother’s VX-808 sewing machine. The hand wheel has a screw in it and it doesn’t loosen or tighten. So I think you’re supposed to do it manually with the hand wheel.

I bought my brother VX-810 sewing machine used and the little part on the bobbin case that's supposed to fit into the space on the round thing at the bottom doesn't fit, so the case moves. I was wondering if I should order a new bobbin case and if so what size/model.
@firstassistingtechniquesan76633 жыл бұрын
Sorry, you will need to ask a store that sells sewing machines or someone more knowledgeable than I. It sounds like you need a new Bobbin case but I am not sure. You would probably need the model number of your machine. Then look online to see if a picture of the bobbin and dimensions matches what you have. I only know how to use my machine for basic sewing. I do not know about repairs.

Hello, I bought a Jones sewing machine and is very similar to this, thanks so much for the instruction. I have one question please, what does the bobbin do that we threaded and put underneath the needle in the special case, thank you for this.
@firstassistingtechniquesan76632 жыл бұрын
The thread in the needle and the thread in the bobbin weave (interlock) to create the stitch and hold it together. If the bobbin thread weren’t there the upper stitch would go in and out the material without anything to hold it in and would just pull right out again. I’m sure you have had a hem or seam that a thread comes loose and when you pull it the seam just keeps unraveling. That is what the bobbin thread prevents. I am pretty sure my explanation was just overkill. 😆
@northernembersoutdoors10452 жыл бұрын
@@firstassistingtechniquesan7663 thanks so much for that, not overkill but much needed and appreciated, it makes sense now. The video really helped, I'm hoping tonight after work to do my first little successful sew where it actually works. Thank you for getting back to me.

@@northernembersoutdoors1045 the only thing I would change on the video is to say that the wheel with the red rim and numbers determines the stitch length; the higher the number, the longer the stitch. I usually use 2 unless you are doing a gathering stitch and then it would be a high number. Good luck.

I only use it for normal sewing. Never anything fancy. It looks like it is set up for a double seam but I have not used it so I cant say. The only addition/correction to the video is that the white wheel with the red rim around it and numbers on it determines the length of the stitch: the higher the number, the longer the stitch. If you make the stitch long enough you can use it to gather material.

I have had mine for over 30 years and it is still going strong. I really don’t know much beyond that. I have a friend who quilts and sews a lot. She has a machine that threads the needle itself. She would probably know more about other brands. I will ask her and get back to you

I spoke with my friend. A Brother is a decent machine and the newer ones can thread the needle automatically. But if you want to get a really good machine, she recommended Bernini. Has a very good reputation.

Hello, I have a similar model sewing machine and I can’t seem to find a manual for it. I was wondering if you are able to do zig zag stitch on it?
@firstassistingtechniquesan76632 жыл бұрын
I will try. Give me a little time.
@firstassistingtechniquesan76632 жыл бұрын
I don't need time. Look at the picture of the sewing machine. on the front top panel you can see something that is numbered 1 to 5; below it says stitch width. That is the zig zag lever. 1 is the narrowest zig zag and 5 is the widest. Then to determine how tall you want the zig zag, you adjust the stitch length wheel on the front; the smaller the number the shorter the height of the zig zag. Hope this helps.
@MarySue1964Ай бұрын
Once the bobbin and the upper thread are threaded how do you get them to sew together?
@firstassistingtechniquesan7663Ай бұрын
You need to rotate the wheel so the needle comes down and catches the bobbin thread and pulls a loop of it up. You then make sure to pull the rest of the loose bobbin thread through and position both threads on the far side of the machine so it does not get caught in the stitches when you start.

My mother passed a few years ago, I now have the machine the only part I don`t understand is the big wheel that turns with a small cover wheel that seems to lock the mechanism. I can hear the motor turning, I was able to fill the bobbin that goes below the needle, but the needle isn`t going up and down...what am I doing wrong? I was able to sow a little bit as a test but now want to sow and needle won`t move...I did open the cover and the strap is fine.
@firstassistingtechniquesan76633 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me like you have the wheel (that has the locking wheel) unlocked. When it is unlocked it will spin the wheel to fill the bobbin but the needle will not go up and down and the rest of the machine is disengaged. In order to get it reengaged you need to tighten the wheel on the side of the machine by turning the outer part of the wheel to the right to tighten it. The machine should then be ready to use.

@@firstassistingtechniquesan7663 thank you, I found the problem, I think I had unscrewed the lock too far and, let`s call it the clutch, came out of it`s seat.

How do I get the threads on both sides of the fabric?
@firstassistingtechniquesan7663Ай бұрын
After you pull the bobbin thread up on the sewing plate you place both threads feeding off the back of the machine. When you put the material under the pressure foot to start sewing the threads will automatically be on both sides of the material.

Dumb question. How do I tie the knots?
@firstassistingtechniquesan7663Ай бұрын
If it is not an area that is going to show you can start a little from the start of the seam and backstitch it a half inch then go forward over the same area and continue sewing your seam. The overlaid stitches will seal the seam. If it is somewhere like a hem and the stitches would show you pull on the thread on the back of the material. This will create a little loop of the thread on the other side. You can either pull it through with your finger or, if the loop is small, pull it through with the back side of your seam ripper or a needle. Then continue to tie it off.
@MarySue1964Ай бұрын
@@firstassistingtechniquesan7663 I made the mistake of tying the knot first. The thread jammed and the needle broke. I hadn’t tried that previously and the thread still jammed. I couldn’t find other needles. The machine was from my mother but I didn’t know how to use it. I know how to mend by hand but that’s it. She had been using that sewing machine from the 80s. So the machine or the needle may have been wearing down. She died and 2010 and no one was certain about using it.
@firstassistingtechniquesan7663Ай бұрын
@@MarySue1964 oh my! Quite the story. My machine is from the 80’s too. I never changed the needle but it is possible that the needle was dulled after all those years. Don’t tie the thread first. It is annoying and frustrating when the thread gets tangled and jammed. Count it as a lesson learned. And don’t give up.
