In this video we throw a big bowl out of clay and talk about some of the basics of throwing a larger bowl. We use 5 pounds of clay for this project but anything from 3 up would produce a good size bowl.

I absolutely love your videos. I have been dabbling in clay for a few years, and finally got my own wheel and kiln. My husband thought it was lame. He found one of your videos and has now been watching all your videos, threw his first two bowls the other night, and when he got home from work said today ... "I wanna throw tonught". Thank you for peaking his interest! I love sharing another interest with him!

Nice bowls Jon. Have you thought about rolling the rim over on the top of your bowls? It gives them a nice finish, doubles the thickness on the weak spot to reduce chipping, and keeps them really round (you can still alter them).

I usually don’t cone down as wide, I prefer to open the clay up when its a little more like a gumdrop shape, just because I like to leave some clay at the bottom (almost like throwing on a clay pedestal) so I can have a nice rounded bowl and can trim a high detailed foot without worrying. I will try a flat bottomed bowl next time!

Hi from Cornwall UK, I've been throwing since Christmas after doing a 2 hr taster session last August, have watched 100s of videos and this one has been the first one that I've been successful with, I actually threw a nice big bowl 😁🐩❤️ thank you!

Great video! A trick a recently learned from my pottery teacher is to use a CD-ROM to shape the bowl, instead of a rib. It gives a great uniform profile.

Awesome! Love it Jon! I make pottery just because I love making something functional out of the earth! And I just love to see the final product being used and loved by someone. I used to smooth out and remove my throwing lines but since I’ve been watching you I’ve left them and I love it! Thanks for the inspiration.

I like to take a piece of a plastic bag, wet it, and use it to smooth the rim. My first pottery teacher was vegan, and disliked using a piece of leather on the rim like most potters do, its cheaper, and works the same.

Hi Jon. Thank you for always answering questions and for taking the time to produce the videos. I have two questions. Firstly, your finger bowls are beautiful, do you make the indentation from the outside? I am in a bowl slump (hahaha) and want to try something new. Secondly, I love the quality of the trees from your stamp, what company do you get your stamps from.

Try to make the wall thickness as consistent as possible , dont mess with it too much the less you can pull up the better. Use less water, the longer it takes and the more water you use the weaker the structure gets.

I always thought the reason there aren’t many female potters is because of long hair. So does the clay not get in your hair when you throw on the wheel. I always thought when it gets wet some of it flys around everywhere

I'm still learning and am still mostly working on smaller bowls, but I think my progress has been pretty good. The small blue mug was the first thing I threw in my weekly community pottery class, and the bowl was one of the most recent. Not bad for nine months (once a week?) imgur.com/gallery/bSRtjkI

When do you wire it from the bat, right away ? And have you ever had to hang the bowl upside down while attached to the bat, because a wall was too thin and was about to flop?
@dianeyennie2337

I love trying to make 3-5 pound big bowls, but need to work on getting the walls thinner. Mine are still chunky.
@Jonthepotter

I do not cut it right away, I wait a few hours before I wire it off the bat. I have done that before where I hang it upside down, mostly to get cool waves in the bowl!

What are the final wet dimensions you get out of your 5lb bowl? Big bowls are relative. I estimate roughly 12" wide by 4" tall.
