Want to know how to throw a big cast net?
This video will show you the tricks to throwing a 10ft or 12ft cast net the easy way. We'll also show you how to throw a cast net with or without using your mouth.
Throwing a perfect cast net pancake with a 10 foot cast net isn't always easy. In fact, most anglers have a tough time consistently throwing perfect pancakes with their cast nets.
However, we have found that it usually boils down to one of a few common mistakes most people have with cast nets.
And in this video, Luke from Salt Strong teaches you exactly how to fix the most common cast net mistakes so that you can learn to avoid anything that might be causing you to not have consistent cast net throws.
Best of all, you'll see how to throw it using your mouth or also without using your mouth... this method of throwing allows for an easy adjustment either way.
In fact, he even used colored duct tape so you can see exactly where different sections of the cast net are supposed to land when you throw a perfect cast net pancake. Making this the most comprehensive cast net instructions on the Internet that we have seen.
And you will also learn how to throw this large 10 foot cast net with or without using your teeth.
Stay tuned for two future videos where we will use the same colored duct tape to show you how to throw a perfect 12 foot cast net and a perfect 8 foot cast net (with or without using your teeth to throw).

I do not normally comment, but I have tried all types of throwing techniques with little success. Your technique is perfect. I did a few test throws in the yard Friday and went shrimping Saturday and of the 50+ throws of an 8' pogie 5/8 1.5# net 50% were pancakes and 40% pretty good throws the other 10% I don't want to talk about...Next is to see what I can do with the 12 footer...Thanks for the video!!!!

Nice vid coach! I've seen way too many of the other videos. This one is SO much better than most, and I'm yet watching the loading portion. I've been catching bait with small nets for years, ready to step up to the big nets but have yet to get my double load sorted. Let you know when I do, I've already picked up some possible issues from your instruction.

Thank you for posting this video! I just started learning to throw a cast net in the last couple of days and I have never seen a video or another person throw one and just came up with my own way and it works but my dad told me when he used to fish in Florida that he'd throw a cast net using the teeth method. Great job on the video. I have been looking for something that described what part of the net ended up where when finished. This is the only one I have found. Thumbs up. I have a pretty decent 8-foot net, but I keep throwing big "D" shapes. One side expands well, but the other collapses. I am holding the bulk of net in left hand, holding the "belt buckle side" with my right. I feel like I am either holding the last part of the net too long or not long enough. Other than filming myself, any suggestions?

Cool lesson man. I start throwing this way when I get up to the 10 foot range. Caveman style on a ten footer wears out the shoulder quick. Got any better ideas other then using teeth? I used to just lip it. But the salt water started really tearing my mouth up after a day of casting. Nice video.

GREAT Video! was out this weekend and would have been nice to throw a net like this. Can you comment on how much the actual "net/brand" matters. I have one that I only spent about $60 on. Not sure if net or me, but doesn't throw well. Can you recommend a very high quality 8-10ft net I should look into? Thanks soooo much!!!

I've watched tutorials on a dozen different throwing techniques, and failed on all of them when I tried it on the water. This is the only technique that I've tried that I can get the net to open most of the time. No pancakes, but it opens enough to get some bait. Thanks! I guess throwing a net is like finding a wife, no matter how ugly your skills, there is a method out there for everyone.

Great video. I‘ve been throwing an 8 foot mullet net for the last 3 years now and still have problems getting a perfect pancake as you call it. It appears that the “green” tagged section of the net in your video wants to follow the rest of the net and not fully open. You described this section as being in your left hand - correct? I don’t recall having to hold on to the lead line in the left hand like you do in your right. I’ve tried several methods with one called the thirds method. The method I learned was almost exactly like this method, throwing a few feet over your left shoulder. I wish I could get it down as good as you have. Good job!

Hey man, great video as usual. I live down in Fort Myers (native) and subscribed to your page after I found you. Been in grad school for 2 years and about to graduate so I haven't had much time throwing my old 10ftbWest Coast Classic Pro net. I just busted it out the other day and was having a hard time spreading it fully. I don't throw the same way you do but I'll give this method a try and see if it works better for me. I load a third of the weight on my right shoulder while using my right hand as the handline hand and my left hand to hold the lead line. Done it that way my whole life even though I'm also right handed.

Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment. I rarely use cast nets so can't even recall what brand of the ones I use are because I've had them for a long time. But my thought of a fair price for a net is $10 to $15 per foot of net... a 10 ft cast net should be in the $100 to $150 range. I'm sure that quality matters, but I always aim for the least expensive one I can find so I don't get quite as upset when I get snagged on something underwater that ends up tearing a hole in the mesh:)

@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 9 жыл бұрын
Hey Patrick, thanks for leaving a comment. There typically are only two things that prevent the cast from opening... the first is by far the most common, and that is having tangles in the lead line from the brail line snagging sections of lead. My suggestion is to spend extra time in the back hand section of you net to ensure that there are no clusters of lead line. If it's clear and still not opening, then you're probably not getting enough rotation in your cast... be sure to start with your right shoulder pointing towards your target, then rotate back so the net is behind your back foot from where you rotate your shoulders towards your target. When done properly, you should feel lead in your back hand spreading out before you even let go of it. Note: If you're using a 10 ft net or larger, an extra tip is to give it a quick tug with your pinky towards the left (assuming you're leading with your right hand)... this will help open the bottom left section of your net.

Patrick Muehling I have three cast nets that I've accumulated over the years (8, 10, & 12 ft), and have no idea what brands they are... just went with the ones in the mid-level price range at whichever store I was in when deciding to pick one up. I like guessing where a video is filmed by the flora that is there. I see short trees and scrub, and cabbage palms. So I am guessing you're a bit inland in south Florida anywhere from Miami to Collier County to Key Largo, I was raised in south Florida and the Flora makes me home sick. It's just a guess, so how did I do?

Salt Strong Yea the trees looked either malnourished or storm beaten into being shorter then inland, and one by two yellow markers looked like it could be a Gumbo Limbo Tree...(the tourist tree because it has red bark and is always pealing). But St. Pete is a little north for Gumbo Limbo trees. I use to live in Naples, now in Tallahassee.

I have a 6' cast net that I can't throw for my life. Is it easier to throw a 10' cast net?
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 8 жыл бұрын
+Rafael Salas Jr I personally feel that they all are about the same level of difficulty... the tough part is loading it correctly for the specific size. Once that is found, then they all are easy to open up. For a 6 footer, you don't need to bunch it up into two equal sections as I did in this video of the 10 ft cast net. All you'll need to do with the 6 footer is hold all of the net in your back hand, pick a spot on the lead line that is facing your body and put it in your mouth, then reach out with your lead hand and grab a spot on the lead line about an arm's length from the spot held in your mouth. Then follow the same throwing technique from the video. Hope this helps... Fish On!

OMG dude. You need to get with Capt Jeff and have him give you a block of instruction. Just fold it all up in one hand and chunk it. Ya had him on your show once already. Get with him and make a video. He'll make ya famous :)
@lukesimonds3653
@lukesimonds3653 9 жыл бұрын
Rico11b Yes, that one handed method that Capt Jeff uses works great, but it is difficult to use on bigger nets. His county has banned all nets above 7 ft, so he's forced to use a much smaller net than the 10 ft net used in this video. For a heavier net, this two handed approach is much easier (at least for a skinny guy like me). Great idea about making a one handed style video... I'm put on our list, and will of course give Capt. Jeff credit because he is who I learned it from. Fish On!
@Rico11b
@Rico11b 9 жыл бұрын
Luke Simonds No no no. Doesn't matter how big or small the cast net is. I've thrown 4 foot nets and 10 footers that same way. Just get with LunkerDog and he will get you squared away. Trust me, net size doesn't matter with his technique. It really doesn't.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 9 жыл бұрын
Rico11b Funny you just mentioned LunkerDog because I was just hanging out with him a few days ago at ICAST (we were ICASTing the heck out of that place). I agree that it's technically possible to use the one-handed method on a large net... it would just be extremely tough for me to heave a heavy 10 ft+ net as a skinny dude.

Thanks for the feedback on this cast net throwing video. Many of the issues we've seen on online tutorials is that they skip over too many steps leaving those who are eager to learn with gaps in the directions... and none of them showed how to assess the casts for understanding where the issue is occurring. So the added minutes watching the tutorial can likely save a lot of frustration for those who are struggling to open a big net.

Well done Jonathon! Yes, throwing a cast net is as simple as doing a bunch of small things right, and if one of them is out of place, then it'll impact the entire sequence. Great idea to analyze your throw to see what were the problem was!

If I throw and get a taco, what was the problem with that throw.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the direction of the concave of the taco... use the last part of this cast net video to determine which section of the load is causing issues (make sure to re-clear then lines after a taco cast to make sure there not any snags).

By the time you got done with all the talking and getting the net ready, all the fish have migrated 5 miles away...
@Saltstrong

Getting the net ready is the most important part in process of throwing a big cast net... if the net is not ready and loaded properly, there is no way that any throw can open the net. So if you decide that other cast net throwing videos are better suited to you, I hope you spend some time watching the details on loading the net.

Just kidding around, don't take me too seriously. Your method is most useful, especially for us old-timers who have partial or full dentures... :)

There are many different ways to throw a cast net... this video shows one of them. For a big net (10 ft. or more), I've found best results using this method. Please let me know of any other casting styles that you believe would work better because I'm always eager to learn newer/better methods. Fish On!
