I dropped a ceramics class this semester after failing miserably to make a clay cylinder. Now youtube constantly puts these videos in my recommend. STOP REMINDING ME OF MY SHAME KZbin! lol

Hi from Japan. Never give up! You might take a look at Simon Leach's excellent series.

No joke our ceramics teacher today said, "we don't start beginners with the wheel, because if we did, every one would drop out on the first day." I was the only one that laughed 😅

I actually did the exact same thing once but later took it again my senior year and was eventually able to get the hang of it. Considering taking it again.

Lmao at least it isn't a viral video of you personally not making a cylinder.

I'm a potter with a small shop and I work by myself. I use to teach but, haven't since the start of the pandemic. Latlely I have videos running in the background while I work. They are good for picking up both pottery and teaching tips. I would love to have a full day worth of videos of your classes, just for the chatter in the background. I hadn't realized how much I miss the voices and sounds of students. I was glad you didn't tell them to quiet down while you recorded.

Try watching the video once or twice at a slower speed. Just in case you don't know how, on the red time line, find the gear for settings. Change normal to a number less than 100. Good luck with your throwing.

Inside of the cylinder is not smooth. Very ridged. Noisy background and talked too much. Certainly not the best I've seen

TheDuchessRN Please send the link to your own video so we can see how it's supposed to be done. I've thrown for many years and thought this video was ok.
@hannahbair53085 жыл бұрын
It's literally in a class room with kids... You really think kids are going to be silent? 😂
@keegore4505 жыл бұрын
TheDuchessRN He's literally teaching his students what to do. Of course he is going to talk. As someone who is currently in a ceramics class and has to do this I appreciated the commentary and explanations. Its a flipping art class. Obviously you don't know what artistic style or expression is because clearly you have none and not everyone automatically knows how to throw a cylinder Duchess.

Many potters purposely leave the throwing ridges on their pottery, especially on the inside as it shows that it is thrown on a wheel and not slip cast, mass production. Personally, I really like that look and often leave the ridges as long as they will not interfere with later surface decoration. Some of his students are rather noisy (what we are mainly hearing in the background are his handbuilding kids chatting while they work). I would love to see him do a demonstration video when no students are there to show the wheel throwers on a big screen at a later time. His technique and explanations are really good. I would have loved to have him as a teacher when I was first learning and still find this video quite useful.

If you want quiet and completely smooth pottery, go to Hsin-Chuen Lin’s channel. Not a pull mark in sight. Personally, I watch lots of different styles. It’s called broadening your horizon. You could do with a little of that, too.
