great video man.. i was actually going to mention PRACTICE in this comment, but you covered it at the end... soo important. for people who struggle dunking, especially with a dribble up, they really just need to commit 100% to learning how to lob.. Obviously it would be great to just fly off the dribble but it's just not reality for most (especially shorter) people - especially early on. Practicing lobbing will get them a dunk sooner and that's where the addiction/obsession kicks in hard. Once you hit one, no matter how weak it is, it's pretty easy to get hooked on a new level. The biggest issue i've seen from people who just can't lob, is they simply don't commit to mastering it (which means alot of practice & focus). It was easier for me to learn it because of my basketball background and watching so many people lob at the parks growing up, I basically just learned by watching them.. Also a few tips from my experience: You might want a ball (dunk ball) that can bounce high, very easy.. so that you don't have to put as much effort in throwing the ball high. Obviously inflating the hell out of the ball helps. I also used to leave my ball in the car - in the florida heat, so that it would become even more bouncy. I'd call it "baking the ball" lmfao.. in the car oven. Finally.. even if you are having problems dunking it and your timing is wrecked, just go smack the ball out of the air at least.. Lob it, run up, jump, and just smack the ball or try to hang on the rim. Don't be afraid of "looking stupid".. That fear is poison. peace!!

Yea man I knew i had to add practice, i was too focused on the mechanics but gotta just KEEP PRACTICING over and over again.also I really appreciate your feedback as usual my dude. Totally agree I feel like lobs are a great way to get that first dunk. Maximizes your chances to get that first one day being able to catch it at its peak and use a full arm swing

Thanks man. Your comment means a lot to me. By now I can only get half of my wrist above rim to grab it one handed, but I realize it takes time to keep practising it. I'm still yet to master the mechanics of running up with proper steps, as I believe it's usually this that mess up my attempt most of the time. Steps are the fundamental here. Without proper step, no matter how high your vertical it's kinda useless. Thanks, I'll keep on practicing non stop till I make it. :)

nice tutorial, my first dunk was off a lob. another thing which helped me a lot was dunking on a lower rim. not to low. you start to get the feeling for dunking, the touch, the body control while in the air and stuff like that, which to me is the most important thing right now. I dont even have to jump that high anymore to be able to dunk, cause i have the magic touch now. I feel it.

the best thing that helped me was trying to punch the ball in. like westbrook does. if im trying to just slowly dunk the ball it will just bounce out the rim(cause its slow), but when i really try to dunk it hard(punch it) i rarely goes out. the problem is punching it in cause you have to be really fast. A fast run up can be the answear for that. You will get up faster which helps a lot. Practice makes the master, so just keep practicing.

Hey man, I'm a new subscriber and I'm excited to see your future content. I'm really eager to start jumping high and i really appreciate your video advice. There was a peace in your previous VLOG video about footwork technique for two foot takeoff and how you experimented with right/left and then left/right so you weren't leaning or leaking energy in your jumps. Can you please discuss that further via a reply or video because im sure im not the only one curious about it. I've heard if you're right handed your optimal jump will be with a right/left plant but I do left/right and its natural. I am right handed but i feel every time i jump i lack body control so im wondering if thats a result of me forcing myself to use my right with that jump style. I'm reluctant on changing it so any suggestions are awesome, Thanks !
@BeTheEnergySteve
@BeTheEnergySteve 8 жыл бұрын
I dont think theres a better plant based on what hand you are dominant with. I think some dunks especially spins maybe be easier with left-right over right-left but thats a different story. My advice would be stick to what plant feels the most natural and has the best form. For me, initially left-right i had was a little more comfortable but my plant technique was way worse and i tried very hard to correct my foot from twisting outwards but it still happened. With RIght-left every single jump felt solid and i planted strong and straight so i didnt have to worry about injury so i stuck with that plant. I ultimately want to jump off both plants and when i finally increase or have a good day you'll see me time to time jumping off both.
@brianhidalgo4618

I've noticed that most right handed and two-footed jumpers dunk with a right-left approach including you(?). It seems it puts your right hand in a better position to reach for the ball. I'm personally right handed and a two-footed jumper (left-right) and feel like it would take me a decade to reach the same height with a right-left foot approach ^^. Hoping it isn't hindering my ability to dunk as I've yet to throw one down. Can grab the rim with two hands on a bouncy day, and been quite close to dunking off of a lob. I'm 6 foot if that matters, cheers.

its definitely good for cockbacks and reaching but its whatever plant feels comfortable and you have best technique with in my opinion :)

Hey. Does cocking back your feet when you take off make a difference in how high you can get up, or is it just a matter of preference and whats comfortable?
@BeTheEnergySteve
@BeTheEnergySteve 8 жыл бұрын
its involuntary, it just happens but it may be a sign of good technique since many good jumpers/dunkers have this effect

Steven Celi yeah. i noticed that, so i asked. just curious, approximately what's the difference between your standing vert and running one?
@BeTheEnergySteve
@BeTheEnergySteve 8 жыл бұрын
standing is about 34 and running 42 - these are both estimates but i feel like ive def hit at least these numbers for each
@bilal_siddiqui4
@bilal_siddiqui4 8 жыл бұрын
Nice! I just started working on my vertical, and my standing is like 29 inches, but my running is only around 33 inches, and i can barely scrape rim on a good day. So i probably need to fix my technique to be able to hang. Thanks man.

Honestly this tutorial was spot on. I pretty much got the hang of self lobs just from watching your videos. Only thing that appears to be an optical illusion is it looks like most guys that jump higher catch the ball at a lower and farther away height rather than right in front of the hoop. Like you do that a lot in your recent videos and I can't figure it out
@BeTheEnergySteve
@BeTheEnergySteve 8 жыл бұрын
i think its farther for me because that actually helps me stay upright and forces my best jump. idk if that makes sense but since i have to reach back i dont even have time to lean forward
