Here are the main concepts described in the video: 1. Gain a positional advantage 1a. Do so by winning the grip fight 1b. Break their grips if they're already established 1c. If you can't break their grips, adjust the gi so your grips are higher and more dominant 2. Use snap-down to break their posture and create an opening 2a. This also creates an opportunity to break their grips 3. Use either advantage to throw

If they push forward, get below and take them forward, if they lean away, crush them down and push them back, if they are rooted in the stiff arm, take them sideways

I fought from 7- 21 competitively to a high level. I returned for a 4 month stint in my late twenties but it ended really at 19. I decided to embark on a new journey after lockdown in the UK. I got a personal trainer once a week. He’s my age 49yrs and fought 10 years ago. We are both black belts and we train the two of us in his gym as by chance he has judo mats. Fate or what. We focus on technique and fitness. I feel like a judoka again. Can’t tell u what it’s given me within. My mind is as quick and I still have the moves. It’s so weird but comforting that after 30 years I can return to a sport that is still very much part of me. Tbh it never ever left me. Judo is calm and a way of being. It is not just a sport but if you embrace its meaning, spirit and purpose you will gain so much more from it as a person. Love all the Higashi videos and they continue to give me inspiration.

Awesome video! I love how Shintaro knows all of the old-school judo too, that move at 5:25 (harai-goshi counter to a leg grab) is a classic move and the tip on turning the grip palm-up (to get more lift, and also get more leverage to prevent them from joining their hands together) is gold. It's so cool to see someone who is well versed in classic Japanese style collar-sleeve judo as well as how to use it against someone who wants to wrestle.

I've forgotten it all (less o-goshi + kesa gatame :) ) but really enjoy the videos and their great content. Climbing and learning again. Thank you.

Your channel deserves so much more love. I do BJJ, there's no Judo around me otherwise I'd cross-train. These tutorials are so well done that I'm able to work them on the mat with a friend (and some minor corrections from our instructor) and they come out beautifully! Thanks a lot!

I started training bjj first and after 6 months I tried judo, I always wanted to learn judo but bjj has more schools and more publicity in general. In this judo school they teach so many good things besides martial arts, it is fantastic, I see why they say it helps you grow as a person too. They do practice ne waza so my bjj has come in handy, and on bjj open mats I have a chance to practice judo takedowns, if my opponent is not pulling guard. Judo is awesome.

Good morning! Great tip for all judokas; that move seems to be an early defensive posture for most until they figure out how to counter it. Thank you Sensei and 'better half' Uke ;)

Couldn't agree more. It's even more prevalent in BJJ where the standing game isn't given much attention. To me this was absolute gold! I actually learned tomoe nage from another of Shintaro's videos and used it the next day to throw a blue belt (I'm a no stripe white belt lol). Unfortunately, people noticed and started expecting it. This gives great insight into the position in general, and gives me a lot more to work with. Great content as usual!!

i came specificaly to this vid thanks to bjj, I'm a blue belt in judo, but I've had trouble throwing them because all they do is play defensive and pull me and them on the ground to pull guard. its anoys the shit out of me, never had this problem in judo, because with propper judo opponents you always have a action and a reaction fast enough after each other. if you throw something you know they will try to counterthrow you, in BJJ they just stay back or lay on their back

I'd like to ask you who do you think is your audience? Judo practitioners? BJJ practitioners? Both? I would say both, I am a jiu-jitsu practitioner, and I watch videos from judo teachers/senseis to improve my throws-game(or whatever you call it in english), but... I don't think this would not work in Jiu-jitsu, because, I face that same problem in championships, and it's hard to break that defensive posture. If you bring your leg closer to your opponent, your are going down, in what we call single leg, or they will take you to the half guard, not necessarily to the thrown, but I lost the world's master last year because of that, and I do pretty well to scape half guard, but the guy was so small and strong that I couldn't, so, my point is, you might want to review that technique, maybe invite some jiu-jitsu practitioner help you to develop those techniques: how to really throw opponents in defensive position, how to avoid: single leg, half guard and jump into guard from standing positions. I bet if you can make a video about those, it will be a hit... Next time I am in NY, I'll pay you a visit and we can talk about it, after this pandemic times, of course...

This stance is only something that only an absolute beginner would do anyway, so I know it's kind of cruel, but I would just overgrip, step back and drive them into the mat, not to hard on a beginner as it's a fine line between learning the hard way and being bullied and put off for life. Maybe explain that 'if you use this stance this is what will happen'. Like when people used to keep trying moroto gari, after their first attempt I would mercilessly sprawl and their their face into the mat, just to let them know that I wasn't having that, do some proper Judo.
@TheNEOverse
@TheNEOverse Ай бұрын
You get people saying 'but in a street fight', as if this stance is something that happens in a street fight too. So tell them to do Judo properly or they're asking for a knee to the face.

@mohaastella

I find that it is quite hard to do a sacrifice throe like tomoe nage when the opponent has their hip back like this. Because their weight is already back and can easily sit back to resist their body going forward onto my foot.
@eclipsewrecker
@eclipsewrecker 3 жыл бұрын
mohaastella I’m using “sacrifice” to mean any throw in which your body touches the ground first and the opponent is pulled across. If they are sitting back then a bull should work
@sway71
@sway71 3 жыл бұрын
@@mohaastella I agree that having the hips back can add a level of difficulty, but the sacrifice throw has the advantage of not needing to fight through the hands or turn your body. Just pulling the opponent forward can do the trick, and if they're in that position, repositioning perpendicular to the line of their feet should be easy. I've definitely hit a tomoe nage in a RvL situation just by stepping in front of them with my front foot, then starting the pull, sit, throw. If they resist hard enough to make you not feel confident sitting, then they're so far back they're asking for osoto, ouchi, kouchi, etc.
