Beyond the basic sweeps and pins, I'd to learn some arm locks like ude gatame or ude garami from the guard, kata juji jime, suso jime, ude hiji ashi kansetsu, etc.

This is spot on. Demo’ed the best throws for self defense. I’ve been a police officer for over 25 years and am a long time student of Judo (Over 30 years practicing the art and sport), and Osoto, Ouchi and Kosoto take are the techniques I’ve used the most in real life situations with a combative suspect. I think I used Ogoshi (or an Ogoshi/Harai-goshi mashup) once. But mostly used on of these techniques to get them to the ground (and I’m a Seoi Nage guy when it comes to Judo. Seoi and old style kata Garuda when I compete/randori). So, really good video.

Ju do , "the gentle way" , "the gentle path" , and you really show it trough your teaching method.. I love judo , the power that judokas have , and the philosophy behind it is beautiful. having the ability to hurt people , and choosing not to , its such a noble thing. just to deescalate situations.. and so that no one get hurt.. amazing art to master in my opinion. With judo you can show that if you wanted you are capable of hurting , and hopefully its enough to stop people that want to hurt you.. And amazing for self confidence too , it helped my mental health a lot.. just a great thing to learn..

Excellent selection of takedowns and pins, and thank you for great explanations of the details. I would add a caution that, as men are statistically more likely (than women) to face multiple attackers, one should have options for that possibility. Pinning one attacker when the others are coming is, everyone will agree, dangerous. The alternative is unpleasant: each attacker has to be prevented from attacking again and, I would think, that most likely means hurting at least some of them.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and expertise in Self Defense Judo,for Judi was the first fight discipline I actually began learning from a professional but unfortunately I had problems with the instructor of which years later I began to train in Muay Thai to possibly make the transition to MMA after moving up in rank.Unfortunately that to was cut short due to staying with a Caretaker who was forging my signature and stealing from my account of which I never told my trainer's being private unless asked specifically about something. Upon going back after getting away from my fowl caretaker and her restrictions which further crippled my training chances my Muay Thai trainer's had moved to a larger and better gym and I lost contact for good but the new owner instructed me to a KRAV MAGA trainer and I have been able to get a bit back on track with that after my mistake of fighting away from the gym and getting incarcerated.Now up in age with wear and tear Im more motivated to become part of a Special Security team for which since a child I never liked or loved fighting but always was taught and in many domestic cases forced to attempt defending myself or others of which I take more pride in then glory or recognition for fighting. With that said I always believed like MASTER BRUCE LEE to learn everything that matches your personality, abilities, capabilities, and possibilities to be more complete and the best verdion of yourself Unfortunately I cant get noone from my Krav Maga gym to train with me in any other discipline except maybe BJJ sometimes and I prefer judo and not just cause it was the first official fight style I began to learn at a school or dojo from a pro I just feel it is more secure for quick victories on the street over BJJ of which gives otjet attackers time to get me and doesn't compliment my KRAV MAGA as well.I do the Judo training when I can with willing people but for the most part Im more self motivated and shadow grapple.✌To you and your team friends and family 4 VIDA!

I don't really like to be laying on the ground so one of his friends can kick me. I'm not interested in controlling someone after I get them off me. I can't run very fast anymore but I'm still pretty strong so I tend to throw you on the ground and remain standing myself then step on your ankle or your knee while I'm running away so you can't chase me very well. I'm glad you show these techniques in the rare instance I want to stop someone from misbehaving but not prevent them from hurting me further while I'm running away.
@yankochoynev652 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, a street fight is not fair, you can't expect a clean 1v1 and you should think about your safety first before caring if the dickhead that attacked you hits his head in the concrete. Running is always the best option for self defence, because judo won't help much after you get stabbed or hit with a rod.

I don't understand the philosophy. If someone tries to harm us in a street fight, wouldn't we want to incapacitate them as quickly as possible? Street fights are seldom 1 on 1, and no one fights fair, so we can't be lingering on the ground, e.g., their buddies join in & start kicking us while we are on the ground, they pull out a weapon.
@katkyle81693 жыл бұрын
its based on context. in a one-on-one you can show alittle mercy assuming they don't have any weapons on them.
@shintaronakano28423 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Those techniques are considered for one on one but not team fights. Judo philosophy is not about fighting in the street, but it can be very powerful self-defense and also can be really dangerous for those who don't have ukemi techniques, which is why we start practicing judo with falling techniques, and even Olympic champions still practice ukemi at every practice. Thanks again for your comment.

Great video, Sensei. But I'm curious about something. Now I want to preface this by saying that I have never take a judo lesson before so I'm no expert at any of it, but with that being said... When you have your opponent in a side control headlock, what's keeping him from using his left hand to push your head back or gouging your eye?
@Rollsgracie42 жыл бұрын
Trier The more you learn of Jiu Jitsu Judo the movie realize the class of this martial art and that you don’t need any of this growing and I gouge you’re pulling stuff you can use it if you needed it but you don’t really need it. When you’re in control you don’t need to be out of control
@trier49522 жыл бұрын
@@Rollsgracie4 I don't think that answers my question.

What would keep him from gouging your eyes with his left hand is the immense amount of pressure you can place on his jaw from your right shoulder (or left shoulder, depending on side control) through a cross-face.

Judo can be very dangerous on the street for the attacker, but also for the Judoka. *The guy you have on the ground will resist and may tire you out and punch you. *You can't always stay on the ground, his friends may start beating you off him.. *You need to learn striking.
@tonytomahawk5160 Жыл бұрын
Technically most Judo doesn't stay on the ground. The exception is BJJ which is exactly why judokas from my time had no respect for it. For all the reasons you gave and then some. As a someone with 40 years experience in cqc after the throw it's typically straight to the destruction phase. But naturally you can't show that level of violence on this platform.
@rsine1002 жыл бұрын
I'm watching this video and I wonder, if this is for the street and most people looking for a fight have some kind of weapon, what's stopping them from stabbing the hell out of you with their free hand? Also what about multiple attackers? Don't assume it will be a fair, unarmed, one on one fight.

You should really try and avoid going to the ground. The attacker could have friends who will kick you while you're down. Or the attacker could pull out a knife, especially if you're not controlling both hands. Unless you are a police officer, prison officer, or work in security, you don't really need to control the attacker. Just defend yourself, then escape to a safe area

I think you are wrong. In self-defence you have to hurt people. Otherwise they wont stop. What do you think will happen if put someone softly to the ground? He will get up and try again. But I think its a good way to train with no Gi for sd because you cant rely on a jacket even if the attacker wear a jacked.

You also have to keep in mind of the legal consequences that come with it. You don't want to do anything wrong that can land you behind bars.
@trier49522 жыл бұрын
I'm going to disagree here, you really don't have to seriously hurt someone to get your point across. What you're trying to accomplish is to either restrain the aggressor until he regains his wit and calms down or someone else steps in before someone seriously gets hurt. Putting him on the ground once or twice using Judo can accomplish that.

Technique 1 is not good to follow. When you plant your leg behind the opponents standing leg you are easily reversed. The opponent and you are now at equal balance and you can be easily thrown too. This should be clarified, it is not a good throw performed this way. The sweeping leg should never plant behind the opponents hips.

I guess one factor that women in particular have to get used to is overcoming the ingrained unwillingness to have their chest press against the opponent, which appears to be necessary for most of these self-defense techniques. When in danger, females have to disregard societal conditioning to protect certain body parts and just do what’s necessary to survive.
