How to Throw, Trim and Glaze a Cylindrical Bud Vase - Narrated Version

This weeks video demonstrates how I throw, trim and glaze my medium sized simple, cylindrical bud vases. These are straightforward to make apart from the folding over of the rim. It thrills me so much to see you wedge your clay the same way I do and you keep your wedged clay in a little cone shape. I made some jars, but did the lids just a bit different than your lids. They are in the kiln right now. Wish I had a gas kiln.

Thanks for watching Carolyn, the little cone shapes important I think, makes for slightly easier centring when thrown onto the wheel, even if it only saves literally a second or so. Good luck with the firing!

Recently found you on Instagram and really love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your process so thoughtfully. You may have already shown this in a different video, but I am wondering if you attached something to the bottom of the piece before dipping it in the glaze? I dislike using those big clumsy tongs so my eyes widened when you seemingly dipped it by magic. Thank you!

Thank you so much! Glad to have you onboard here too. I'm afraid not, no magic or anything. I just put my finger in the hole and push it underneath. I only ever do this with these forms as the interior is already glazed and the base is covered in a layer of wax so thankfully the glaze isn't absorbed there. You can glaze without using tongs but I'd say in the long run it's worth it as it's not only faster but it's easier to get a uniform clean surface too. They are definitely awkward to use but after a bit of practice it'll start to feel normal. Thanks for watching!

I took a class in high school that I loved, but it was cut short because of the pandemic. Thank you so much for sharing your process and knowledge with us! :)

What a kind comment, thank you Luna. Well, there's many things you can do but of course COVID has made things more difficult. Finding some evening classes, offering help to a local potter in exchange for some tuition can work too. Apprenticeships are wonderful but of course. they can be difficult to find. Or simply purchasing a wheel to use at home, attending masterclasses and just practicing a ton. There are some wonderful pottery courses in the UK and Ireland, (DCCoI Ceramics Skills course and Clay College), but outside of the UK my knowledge is relatively limited I'm afraid. Good luck finding something, and thanks so much for following along and watching my videos.

Hey Paul! At the moment I'm using a Canon 5d mk iv for all my filming and photography, with an assortment of prime lenses, mainly a 50mm/100mm. It was huge upgrade from my previous camera and one I've had my eyes set on forever. Now if only I wasn't constantly getting it covered in clay...

Hey Kajsa! Thanks for taking your time to watch. Those I use I mix in-house from sacks of raw materials and generally they work best in a reduction fired atmosphere, which isn't so beginner friendly. If you search for snow flake crackle glazes you'll find recipes that might work for you, but I don't think you can purchase them from anywhere.

What a wonderful piece I just want to know something, is glazing plates or cups and use it for food safe ? Or glaze is harmful to health ?

Thanks! They aren't harmful, the materials used int he glaze and clay are all really quite inert. The crackles do stain overtime but there's nothing dangerous about that unless you're firing at lower temperatures and are using certain toxic materials. Glazing makes the pottery a lot less porous and therefore more hygienic. Of course, you don’t want to use anything toxic (such as lead) for glazes that are going to come into contact with food.

Hey Em! Thank you very much, both for the comment and for taking the time to watch. Well, I could, but truthfully I don't find myself doing anything that's doable at home so to speak. I generally only use the potter's wheel rather than hand-building or making pinch pots, so making a video like that might be a little out of my comfort zone, and also, I wouldn't be particularly good at it either 😬. I hope that's understandable! I may very well do some hand building in the future but my work is mostly production pottery centric these days.

Shake the water out, it isn't too difficult, 95% of it will flow out and the rest can be forced out. The last few drops, if any, will evaporate eventually I suppose.

It's for flowers or dried stems, foliage, that sort of thing. It's a flower vase essentially, just with a slightly unorthodox appearance.
