How to tie a Blood knot or Clinch knot in an easy to follow and clear video. This commonly used knot can be used in stiff and supple mono as well as fluorocarbon lines to connect swivels etc. An essential knot to know for all anglers.

Since i last posted about having problems with these, i just tied a size 18 to 2lb line properly first time. After watching this and from your comment earlier, the keys were using my finger to keep the initial loop open and taking it more nice and slow, slowly pulling the standing line and wetting it at the end. Great, seems like i've nailed it but i'll practice some more. I should also add, what i found helps is i had the hook clamped to my Matchman hook tyer. Thanks again for these vids!

Interesting fact about the 5 turns. I've always tucked mine whatever line I'm using. Never had one fail. You've got me thinking now, going to do some tests.I like your knot tying presentation Miles. Thanks. EDIT: Just tried twice with both versions on 15lb mono. Both times the un-tucked slipped and came undone easily, the tucked versions didn't slip at all.

Do you use the blood knot with braid ?

There are two versions of the blood/clinch knot. One is tucked and the other not. The tucked blood knot is stronger when using thin slippery lines. For something like fluorocarbon the knot is weaker if you tuck it.

I have tried this knot multiple times but when testing and pulling the swivel into an inline lead the knot seems to come off of the swivel Not sure why this is happening Any thoughts?

You don't recommend tucking then?

hi myles each of the comments seem to contradict each other say fluorocarbon to a swivel where a palomar is not used so what knot 5 turn grinner/blood knot (tucked or not ) triline every tutoral claims a different knot is the best knot for fluoro HELP!

It's enough to drive you mad Alan! The thing is this. The majority of the videos and advice out there is just based on people's experience out on the water/bank. Very few have had access to calibrated line testing machines. Then, there are the many different types of line. Not all mono is the same. Some is slippery and others not and many other characteristics for abrasion resistance or casting or what ever it is the brand are looking for. Oh and fluorocarbon behaves differently again. I can tie most knots in most materials but they may not be the strongest knot in that particular material. It's about knowing that if a line is slippery it'll probably need more turns and possibly tucking. Or if it's hard and wirey then fewer turns will work best. That is why I despair when I hear people saying "I only every use x or y knot. That's the only one you'll ever need". That is true if you only use one kind of line. If you use braid and of different thicknesses as well as fluoro and different monos then you need to know which to use and when. I did think that a palomar is the best knot in fluoro, but after really checking on a line testing machine using a few different fluorocarbons I found that actually a blood knot it better. Don't get me wrong. I caught some amazing fish using fluoro tied to a swivel with a palomar knot. It just isn't the strongest. I hope that clears things a little.

Martin there is a know for different materials in different situations. Yes a palomar knot is good in some materials but it others it is not as strong. I know this from using IGFA calibrated scales to test different knots in different materials also from line manufacturers. So I you use a palomar knot for every material you use, ie braid, mono, fluorocarbon then you wont' always be using the strongest possible knot. Fact.

@@martinpecheur8506 You should not us a Palomar knot with braided line. For that a Uni knot works well with a higher number of turns the thiner the line is. I used to use the Palomar for fluorocarbon with no problem but tests show that a blood knot is stronger. The Palomar is fantastic in monofilament of almost all diameters. I hope that helps.
