Thank you for this instruction video. My son has a unit on Native American study coming up at school and he has been assisted to creat a Coup Stick for his part as the Hunter Warrior. I’m trying to take this opportunity to not only create it with him, but educate both of us on the meaning and significance of each part of the Coup Stick.

Hope your native American. We take great offense to people who make our traditional items for a grade or profit. There are means and reasons why one can hold a coup stick and it becuz they have performed great deeds on the battle field or killed others of higher status then ones self. Drawing a picture would be more appropriate . than to have made one if you are of non native decent.

For those who just have trouble with sinew being too sticky to deal with, consider using DNC embroider thread to wrap..It works perfect on a quill, not the traditional way but a huge choice of colors is another plus.

@John A friend's mother gifted me a hawk's feather, (the feather itself was significant because it had inspired her son's name.) I wanted to respectfully incorporate it into something, to honor her gift and wanted to know what I should do beyond just wrapping it if it was for neither a vision quest (though it sounds like it was much closer to that) nor a coup.

Beeswax or pine resin works well too. You can look up how to make pine resin glue, its fairly easy.

When they used real sinew they probably used hide glue it forms a tight bond with the sinew much better than pine resin does

Apparently you cannot pick up feathers in a park or conservation area or any protected area nor can you pick up sticks and use them as walking sticks because you're interfere with the ecosystem. It's one stick to you but when you have 100 people go through it's 100 sticks and these sticks you have little bugs and creatures that rely on them to live underneath and therefore you are not allowed to pick them up nor are you allowed to pick up feathers in parks and conservation areas you are only allowed to pick up feathers along the street These are my thoughts and opinions from my readings and research. I might be right I might be wrong. It's only my opinion purely for my entertainment purposes only. You are quite welcome to do your own research and I would be happy to read your comments as well

It is illegal in Canada, USA and Great Britain to be in possession of feathers of any migratory bird, such as ducks or geese, or any bird of prey. Even feathers of the American Crow are illegal!!!! How do you get around this to make your stuff??? It is specifically stated that no feather shall be used for costumery or jewelry. Please tell me. I need to know!!!

Joseph Shore you are given them. Should there be a dropped feather, different peoples have respect rights for the bird and the manner in which a bird "loses" or "gives" a feather. It is always best to ask your tribal elder a question- bringing your question with a respectful gift of sage/tobacco, cloth/blanket, & food. If you are not native, you can still consult with a tribal council in your region, and don't ever take a feather from national parks & recreation area's, nor a tribal land. Most feathers sold are turkey feathers, synthetics, or other legally harvested bird or fowl, and can be found in local craft stores or bait & tackle shop.

1st off: What tribe are you from? 2nd: what do it mean to you to present a vid of that nature? Real indigenous people don't show off and make item's of that nature for themselves. The are earned in a proper setting.
