I've tried various knots over the years, but always go back to double Palomar. The double P starts out the exact same way as this knot, but you make an overhand knot then slip the bait thru before tightening. I like easy, so I many give this one a try. I am wondering to make it slip-proof if you could use the loose ends to add a double clinch knot on top of it?
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling Жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t be possible to finish this knot with a double clinch, because it would be too tight to cinch down. You can finish any knot with half hitches or a Rizzuto finish technically, but it shouldn’t be necessary with this knot
@dwightrice7966
@dwightrice7966 11 күн бұрын
Hey, Jake...regarding the double pitzen, do you wrap around more than 3 times for light line (4-8lb)? I know with a few knots, it's wise to wrap a few more times than with a heavier line. And, in light of Tyler Berger's recent discovery about the knot strength of the Double San Diego Jam knot, have you changed your mind about the efficacy of the Double Pitzen knot? Put another way, do you have more confidence in the Double Pitzen than the Double San Diego Jam knot? I prefer the simplicity of the DP knot but agree it will eat up leader length. I like the DSDJ knot when the leader is short because when the tag ends facing the hook, it picks up less slug at the knot than the DSJ. Thoughts?
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling 11 күн бұрын
@@dwightrice7966 Hi Dwight! In the 4-8 lb range, 1 extra wrap might be good, but I wouldn’t exceed that. In the doubled-line knot category, each wrap is almost like two wraps. Strength-wise, I definitely have confidence in both knots, but even prior to Tyler Bergers test, I switched pretty much exclusively to the double SDJ. This was primarily because of how much faster I could tie it, how consistently I tie it without error, and how easily I could tie it in windy conditions. The direction of the tag end is another bonus. I even use the double SDJ to tie on certain flies with super light tippet

Is it really significantly better than the Trilene knot for FC and mono alike? And three tag ends in the wrong direction...
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling 11 ай бұрын
Any of the knots that pass through the eyelet twice are significantly more strong than the knots that only pass through once based on all the tests I’ve seen. At some point, I’ll do a comprehensive test of all of them myself 👌

Yes the Trilene passes thru the eyelet twice, I wonder if three passes will make it better as long as they don't cross in there...
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling 11 ай бұрын
@@andersriksson100 I had a total brain fart regarding the Trilene knot. With the knots that pass through the eye in the same direction (like the Trilene and the Fish’N Fool knot, my theory is that there is an unequal amount of force being applied to the lines passing through the eye. With knots that pass through the eye in opposite direction (double San Diego Jam, Double Pitzen, Berkley Braid, Double Uni, Double Clinch, etc) the force is evenly distributed in the eye. When tying the Trilene knot and Fish’N Fool knots, I’ve noticed that one of the two wraps around the eyelet falls to the side quite easily and is entirely reliant on the wraps above it to hold it in place.

It seems that only one of the two loops around the ring are actually under tension. The other could be tensioned by the second strand that sticks off to the side. I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong or if that's just how this knot is, but if that's right it's kinda weird. Regardless, it works pretty well as a slipknot.
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling Жыл бұрын
It sounds like it’s not being cinched properly- since both lines running through the eye ultimately end in a tag loop, you might only be cinching with one side of the loop as opposed to the entire loop. This knot essentially has two cinches, you must first cinch the knot up (after the wraps and feeding the tag loop through the top-most loop), and then cinch the knot down to the eye. Your first cinch is likely where the imbalance is occurring- it needs to be tight around the loop tag end before cinching down. Hope this helps!
@anthonyarkadia9760
@anthonyarkadia9760 Жыл бұрын
It's actually a cinch knot, that is what makes it so strong, the more tension on the main line, the tighter the knot gets. Also the lines do not dig into one another, ever! My dad showed me this knot 30 years ago.. I have never used any other knot.. I can honestly say that I have never lost a lure, or a hook using it..! I always tie a double uni knot to braid with 12 feet of flourocarbon, them the Pitzen.. What I love the most is that it can be used with any line you do desire..

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not convinced. I've never had a Paloma knot fail. Would this knot be stronger if the single tag end was passed through the loop, before tightening?
@nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling Жыл бұрын
I personally wouldn’t use a Palomar for fluorocarbon or mono as it does not utilize the ability of those line types to create strength by biting into itself, and because there are many knots for those line types that have tested much stronger. However, my number one piece of knot advice is if you have a knot that never fails you, it’s probably working just fine for your purposes 👌

It’s better for mono and fluoro because those tend to be less slick, and this knot benefits from line that tends to resist slipping. I suggest trying the double uni knot for direct connection with braid. In all this knot research, I’ve observed that knots with downward wraps work better with mono/fluoro, and knots with upward wraps work best for braid (like the double uni knot). I’m getting real nerdy with this stuff at this point 🤓

I don’t think I recommended it for 70lb mono, line that heavy would likely be too stiff to tie this knot. I use this knot for 10-20 lb Fluoro. @nextlevelangling
@nextlevelangling Жыл бұрын
I’m sure it can be done with less line waste, but if your loop is too short, the line stiffness may prevent you from performing the wraps using the gravity tension method. You could certainly just make the wraps the same way you would for any other knot (manually with your fingers), but that removes the fun part 🙃. To your point, I only use this knot for fluorocarbon main line setups, it wastes too much line to be used with braid to fluoro leader setups, in my opinion.

The Palomar loses 50% of it's strength on flourocarbon if it's not tied perfectly and also has tendency to burn your line. Several pro anglers have told me the same.
