Tom and Tim.. I haven’t laughed so hard in a very long time. What a great video. You are obviously very good friends. The camaraderie between you is amazing. Thank you

The single most entertaining fly tying video ever made. I actually learned more with this format. Tom can you do this with more famous fly tyers. This needs to be a series. Called it Men's Quilting Competition

This is such a great idea. I like the lesson that there are different ways to get to the same pattern. Keep em coming!

I won't lie- it was so refreshing to see that wing case pop free and realize that these dudes are human after all!

I am so happy Tom got a new camera! this other one though is better than he thinks. The focal point is about an inch or inch and a half BEYOND his fly. You can see his bobbin come into focus as it passes behind the fly away from us =)

23:18 - Tom is 100% right. Millimeters make so much more sense than inches for measuring fly tying beads. Every brand should list the size in mm

I love this! while watching this video i used tims rear end and toms front end tied on a jig hook with a tungsten bead. Thanks fellas!!

That was Great! I feel much better about my "figure it out" style of tying, I dont do the tie-along, I'll watch how it's done and then try, sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks, but it's how I tend to learn. I can now go down to the local fly shop, either buy 1, or take a photo, (depending on how complicated it looks) and create a reasonable facsimile, of course with substitution of materials and making up my own technique. But it's great to see how others go about it.

That was great folks! I tied right along with you, but I didn't make a video. Going to fish it tomorrow. Thanks a bunch! 😃👍🏻

Its funny that i tie mine like a combination of both. I dont hide my bead. But my legs and wing case are the same fibers over the peacock. Half and half are dimensions that always work imo.

I like to use CDL for the tails. It's much more durable as well as more realistic. 7/64 pt 1/8 will work fine, I like black and copper

I like the Frank Sawyer version of the PT in the # 18 and 20. I had some of my best days on the stream with those. As for the American Version, I tie them with and with outlets with and without beads and they all work well so much so I can't tell the difference. I also been doing mine the way Charlie Craven dose them, It a way I like.

why did you tie them with beads after saying no bead is better? I've gone over to beadless PH's.

Still can't figure out the science behind Tom's theory of weighted nymphs "counteracting" the weight/effect of the tippet on the fly. Is this to say that a tung beadheaded nymph is going to help me achieve a more natural drift because my 5x tippet is causing all sorts of unnatural drift down there!? I'm no expert, and I'm not very smart, but I just can't buy it. The more weight you put on a fly, especially a nymph, the more it dampens the action of the fly. The bushier a bug, the slower it sinks...I mean, what about the science is that difficult to understand? 90% of my dropper flies are unweighted (if they have weight, it's usually some wire) for this exact reason - I want assure that I'm getting some good flutter in that fly... awesome episode, but I'll stick to tying a healthy amount of unweighted subsurface flies.
@pbgd33 жыл бұрын
I think it's best to think of tippet as buoyant. This becomes clear if you fish streamers on sink tip more tippet means less sink of the streamer and a shallower fly. On a dry we might toss floro to get the leader to sink a bit out of the film. Unweighted nymphs like a soft hackle usually are going to be fished off a drop shot rig or behind some split shot so if you dont weight you aren't in tight line contact with the fly which is drifting and you are in contact with a sighter where as to tight line you want the nymphs to hold that buoyant tippet down
