My grandfather served in the 101st for several years and when out joined with the boy scouts of America leaders he drilled this seat into my head when I used to go see him as a kid. He used to tell me how the 101st would test how fast each recruit could do these things in under 90 seconds. Part of why I bring two lengths of rope, paracord, and a solid carabiner with me wherever I go just in case. Probably can't make it under 90 seconds anymore, but it's still a very valuable thing to know if you need to abseil down anything in an emergency.

Only had to do this in USMC bootcamp and got sent down the hell hole, no portholes, didn’t break hand fast enough, ate it, and was swarmed by three drill instructors I could barely see, good times 👍

Ah, memories! How tight do you recommend? I was trained to get it as tight as I could. When I was trained, we didn't have locking carabiners, so it was emphasized that the gate had to be up and the hinge closest to the body. THEN, proper roping in was heavily stressed, lest the rope pop the gate and you end up on a 'Polish Rappel', with the rope running straight through and no braking friction...

One thing he forgot to mention was make sure it's good and tight. If it's comfortable then it's too loose. Make it tight enough to not be comfortable but not so tight you restrict blood flow. IIRC from basic you should only be able to fit a couple fingers under the rope, and test it by slowly lowering your weight on a line while still on safe ground so if it fails you only drop a lil bit on ya butt. It's been like 16 years since I did one of these at Ft. Knox 19D basic (then had to reclass after messing up my back) so thanks for the refresher.

Do you prefer the swiss seat over the Ranger seat? I think the swiss is more secure for climbing and rope bridges but the Ranger is quicker for just repelling. From my experience anyway.

Here in Brazil we call it "American seat", the only thing we do different, is the end of the rope Wich is on your rappelling hand goes twisting and following the front knot as the two were the same
@templarioaph
@templarioaph 8 ай бұрын
In Brazil it's called the Japanese Seat... wonder why. There's 2 differences, though. We do a square knot in the beginning too, instead of just wrapping the rope, and when it's coming around your waste back to the front, we make the right part of the rope go through the ropes that are going down to your private areas. Very simple, very useful, not that comfortable, though

One of the videos I created does show how fix and set up shirt stays for continuous use, but listen to the colonel carefully about safety. I don't think my cheesy trick with electrical tape and blousing garters is such a great idea it CAN malfunction and would be most likely to dangerous being that shirt can snap off and you wouldn't be able to jetisen (discard them) doing something like that.

The carabiner looks like it’s on the wrong way isn’t it? I think you want to see the lock screwing downward as you are locking it so vibrations don’t rattle the lock loose / open. Then with it upside down turn facing the opposite way so the gate is away from you where pressure is applied to the spine of the carabiner rather than the gate side. I recall gate sides have 10% of the carabiner strength and spines have 90% for D-shape carabiners. 50-50% for oval shapes.

a necessary skill for anyone who spends time on a rope. Regardless if you have enough harnesses for you and your climbing , rapelling, tyrolean traverse , team; you should know how to tie this. Let me elaborate on why. (Gear fails. one harness is none, two is one. {like most essential gear and equipment}) if you need to perform a rescue, extraction, or other task involving rope work, the Swiss Seat is not the most comfortable, but can be tied using rope or webbing in an emergency.

Whooooaaaaa! We did something like this in basic training!!! They didn't tell us what it was called, but it was similar to the "Swiss seat"...only more complicated. The drill sgts; and what's called the "cadre" showed us every little step, and checked us at least 4 times, to make sure the procedure was correct. We repelled from what's called the "warrior tower". It's 40 feet tall, and it's one of the few events in basic training; that can for real fucking kill you, if you're not cautious. I'm sure that theres people who watch this channel, who have never had military experience, so I have to mention there's a saying "embrace the suck"....and trust me-THIS SUCKED (until the end) The ropes were QUITE TIGHT. The lower half of my body was partially numb. Any place where blood could flow- I felt PAIN...those ropes REALLY dig into you. I was one of the last people to repel down the warrior tower, had to use the bathroom, and it was AN HOUR AND A HALF before I reppeled. Patience is a virtue. Once it was my turn, I reppeled; it was dangerous, but fun. I got to take off the bridling ropes, then had one of the BEST pisses EVER😎
