How to tie a variation of the Soldier Palmer

The Soldier Palmer fly has been used in Loch Style fishing longer than I can recall. Favoured as a top dropper fly on a team of traditional wet flies it brings fish from nowhere! The Army team have long used the name Soldier Palmers in their endeavours on the competition scene. The logo has sported the two stripes denoting the rank of Corporal hence the thumbnail.
I have had a tinker with the traditional pattern and would be more than happy to give this one a go on a wild trout loch any day!

The good old Soldier Palmer, my go to top dropper loch style fly, the red wool I used came off the Pringles knitting department floor.

Me too, never without one on the top dropper, I tied mine extra bushy and ginked it up. Funny thing tho I don't fish it any more!

A wonderful evolution the classic. Great use of the three hackles. The body hackle supports the structure of the fly and generates disturbance the combination of head hackle adds both the subtle highlight with the movement and life from soft head hackle. Will add some to my boxes. I still love a palmer on its day. In #10 down to #16. Will add some in the 12/16 range with an extra behind the front head hackle. Almost as on Invicta’s a very short Jay throat. Will have to remember not to mention or refer to them. As my little corporals. Sorry pal my humour never changes.

One my favourite for wild brownies have changed the body and tail for yellow with sparkle through wool that's did well for me for brownies and rainbows
