How to tie a variation on the Bibio Fly

The Bibio is a classic wet fly often tied as a Hopper or Shipmans the combination of red and black is a winner. I never used to tie my Bibios' like this but I saw a photograph on FB by Scott Aitken. He had paltered up the body of the fly, I really like the idea so thought I would give it a go. I have added a Partridge Hackle to the front that brings a little something more IMHO. What do you guys think? Comments below please.

I have always tied it palmered. I like the addition of the partridge hackle, I have done that with the Kate McLaren

@@lindsayiflyfish I had the same idea from the Kate McLaren been doing it for a long time on about half of my bibio’s also with Zulu’s and even as an ether or on peacock spiders and pennells

Tied similar but had silver tag and had grizzle hackle instead of partridge worked never failed till I lost it going back to traditional type with my twist once get out once lockdown lifted up here in scotland

Nice variant. Just one thing, I'd say it's better to wind both the hackle and the rib away from you when palmering. That way the hackle is trapped at each turn. It's more secure, and easier to avoid trapping the fibres when winding through. I'd definitely give this a try, be good to do some old style loch fishing.

Nice variant with the partridge!! I done a Katie with partridge too that works really well , I seen Davie Mcphail do a bibio with a grizzle hackle at the front that he won a number of competitions on years ago !! Pimped up traditional flies are brilliant , 👍👍👍

Nice bibio Lindsay!. They'll always catch a fish or 2. I definitely get more with the opal mirage rib but it gets tore to shreds after a couple of takes, I'll figure it out one of these days. Started getting my gear ready for next weekend!! Stay safe ATB Chris
