How to Tie a Woolly Bugger Fly in under 60 seconds!

The Wooly Bugger streamer fly fishing fly is a classic. This thing is a fish catching machine! Fly tying can be intimidating, but this fly isn't super hard to tie. We definitely recommend this as a fly tying pattern for beginners.

My favourite 'first fly' to teach beginners. You can combine so many of the basic elements and techniques in one fly. Especially if you dub the body instead of using chenille.

I've always tied mine by attaching the Hackle at the end of the body.. then palmer forward

@Eric-gi9kg If that works for you, then that's great. I've never been one for following rules or being tied to following textbook patterns. I tend to start with the ' correct methodology ' then I begin playing and adapt patterns to suit my needs or the materials I have on hand.

Probably wouldn't recommend trying down your hackle with wrapping wire because it's not very strong... Tie it in with your chenille and wire and wrap them forward one at a time for more durability 👍

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve see. Them tied this way several times and it seems like they would fall apart

I rarely put weight on mine.. just use either a weighted leader or a sink tip line.

It is. Must be a thousand versions of it. SCULPIN, I tie mine 3-4” long usually on , mustad hooks ,4x long. You need to know what they look like in your area.

First time fly fishing yesterday, I tossed the black wooly bugger out and caught a large crappie, a big blue gill, and a 2.5lb Largemouth... You usually don't catch bass in the pond I fish unless apparently you throw a fly.
