How to tie an easy Foam Hopper Pattern

This easy to tie Foam Hopper is one of a kind in the Terrestrial Fly Patterns. The original name of the this pattern is "Chaos Hopper", it was originated in Montana and intended to be fished on rivers like the Yellowstone, Madison, Missouri, and Big Horn. This is my favorite Hopper Fly because it is very simple, it has a very lifelike profile and trout eat the heck out of it. I often fish a Hopper Pattern with a nymph dropper in August and early September when the grasshoppers are bigger and more active in the hot sun. I really like that pattern a lot , thanks. Don't fish a lot of hoppers but a forthcoming trip dictates that I have some, which means I don't want to spend hours tying flies that will not be of much use to me later on. Four minutes a fly seems quite a reasonable investment for a fly that looks that neat. Thanks.

Very cool Matt, ive been tying patterns using that poke a hole in the foam technique in my head but havent actually put them on a hook. Gonna give it a shot right now.

There's a ton o' hopper patterns out there, many of them effective. However, I'm not spending 15mins per bug when I can get it done in 4 or less. Thx for the inspiration!!

i believe i use a size 12 for this hopper pattern, but you can tie this fly on any size hook you want!

i haven't got a preference for that material. you could try ep fibers, but there are many synthetic materials out there that would work great for this hopper pattern. it helps if the material you use floats, other than that, you can make it any color you like. thanks for watching - mt

I just tied one on a 16, I used for on a hopper dropper rig for panfish and they ate the heck out of it. Cut off my dropper because I did not need it.

This pattern works quite well for a Hi/Low or Hopper Dropper Rig.

This foam hopper pattern can be tied in much smaller sizes, I suppose you can tie this fly as small as your skills, tools and materials allow. All I know is, Grasshopper eaters beware...
