How to Tie and Use the Pipe Hitch

Read the article at the SNO Blog -- wp.me/p1NwuR-AZ -- The pipe hitch is an interesting variation of the rolling hitch. Whereas the rolling hitch is used to tie the rope to itself, the pipe hitch is used to tie the rope to an object. Use this knot when you need to lift a pipe or pole, or in any application where the tension on the rope will be approximately in line with the longitudinal axis of a smooth pipe or pole. It is similar to the icicle hitch, except that to use the icicle hitch you must be able to pass a bight over the end of your pipe. If this is impossible, the pipe hitch can be used, as it finishes with a clove hitch.

@SNO Multimedia Dang, I've been trying a cinch knot with no success. I'll try this! Wow! A tree a 3/8"rope with this pipe hitch on a crow bar, reverse gear and my fender and headlight popped back in place! Thanks!

Thanks for the video. It works almost like the principle of Prusik Knot. I would make one change, though, and that is I would use Constrictor instead of Clove Hitch. I know it is harder to untie, but I rather be safe. Thanks again for the video. I have never seen this type application before.

BAH1 I tried the hitch on 480 ft of wet PVC!! Slipped ever time! Finally did a series of half hitches 4-or 5 in a row. worked well enough for me. I did have use a simple Jorgenson cabinet clamp on some pulls for extra friction. those little clamps are amazing!

this knot is very popular in the powerline field, its used alot for pulling wire and also when using spacercarts when riding along the powerline to stop you from rolling down the powerline and allows you to put yourself in the position to work. It must be adjusted alot when working with it. If you tie it your way the knot will constantly come loose when having to adjust it becoming an annoyance and you will be constanlty fixing it and snugging it back up. that way is incorrect for alot of the ways we use the knot, when this knot becomes a key part to your work you want to tie it correctly. Turns should always be on the tension side. Great video, that knot will with out a doubt hold! But not the proper way of doing it.

Appreciate the video. But my constructive feedback is that the less obvious part of the knot (tying off the clove hitch) is the part you glossed over and had your hands in the way. Whereas the obvious “wrap it around 4 times” is the part you showed very clearly. Would be great to see that final step with the same clarity as the first.

You know I've been looking all around and it's about 50/50 ... it looks like a lot of people tie the pipe hitch in a way that pulls away from the loops, kindof like an icicle hitch or a gripping sailor's hitch. But some other people tie it the way you propose, kindof like an enhanced rolling hitch. At this point I'm not quite sure which one is better. PS -- I think that the way you propose is more adjustable, because the turns stay together. The "pulling away from the turns" way achieves some better constriction once the turns fall apart from eachother. But I'm not completely sure.
