I decided to try a couple of shirts using the gravity and wick dye techniques together on the same shirt. I think they both turned out pretty cool!

That's the great thing about experimenting, you find results, you compare expectations, you come up with different variables that may get closer to expectations. Have you thought perhaps of doing the wick dye part first up to a certain point then removing it from the muck and then applying the gravity portion of the combination? So many different ways of doing the same thing can result in a wide variety of results. These both look good, sort of like a skin zipper across the body.

Wick dyeing and then gravity dyeing was suggested by someone else too. I think that would work really well to give a smoother transition between the two methods. I'll have to give that one a try. I also want to repeat this process with the shirt damp and see what happens. 🙂

This worked out great. Maybe start the wick dye technique once the gravity has moved up the shirt a bit more. I like both shirts, but that spicy plum is amazing.Both techniques yield great results too.

My first thought was in agreement with the two step process. It's a lot of labor, but I bet it would look awesome...and I just happened to have pulled a shirt out of a soda ash bath and had no real plan so I think I'll give it a try. I know you've used that spicy plum before, but that really immediately caught my eye this time. I keep threatening to place an order with them.

Very cool results. What ratio of water to soda ash do you use for the sprayer?

I use my regular soda ash solution, so 1 cup of soda ash in 1 gallon of water.

I think if you had folded in half and inclined on a angles surface at 45 % into the bucket the dye would have gone up further.
