The knowledge our Navy men gained from this film was vital in defeating the Knotzis!

at 12:41 the "rolling hitch" is the knot used for Aircraft tie-down ropes at airports. But we were not told to make the final half-hitch at the end, I might start doing that for extra security in the knot.

Thanks, Periscope! I had an old picking buddy that's go on to glory that was in the Navy and could take two ropes and flop them around and tie the nicest knots you ever saw. I never did get how he did it but that was just fine with me. Thanks again!

Still teach student pilots the midshipman's hitch to tie-down light aircraft. Even frozen ropes can be untied.

I think this is the first 'how to tie a knot' video I've seen where the instructors didn't basically spend all their time smirking at their superior knowledge over the sub-human dweebs they were supposed to teach that didn't know how to tie 150 different knots in their sleep. You can actually learn from this one.

That's a really interesting comment. All military instruction is like this, because they have a fatherly attitude toward the men. They know they have to teach them stuff and that they don't know anything. Looking down on the men would be pointless; the goal is to teach them to do it.

After learning to tie these knots by reading books, including a US Army field manual, I thought this was excellent, they didn't go too fast, also a good refresher course.

I previously knew only very few of these knots and a knot we call the "truckers knot". It involves a half hitch and a sort of slip knot and basically makes your line very tight so your load won't shift or tarps won't fly away. But as a grade schooler I was fascinated by horror movies and therefore the noose. Knowing only a few basic knots, I literally taught myself how to tie a mean noose, and I still recall how today. It isn't that hard really. I was told by a knowledgeable friend years ago that a noose with 13 wraps was illegal and considered some sort of weapon. Does anyone know if that is true because I tied one and it is currently hanging on my porch for Halloween.

The cleat hitch is locked off wrong and you should never put your hand inside a loop, that's how you lose a hand or fingers!
@outdoorman74252 жыл бұрын
at 01;30 in the film, the narrator erroneously called the knot a bight when it is really a loop.

Many of these older knot training films & books should viewed with caution... many (but but all) knots that served well throughout antiquity just aren't reliable tied in modern synthetic line. This film also gives some bad advise concerning the 'square' knot (now often referred to as a 'reef' knot). For tying two lines together (such knots are known a 'bend'), it is, and always has been dangerous... please don't believe me, research it it on your own.

And some of them are sloppy, too. The hitch to the cleat is secure as portrayed because of the second hitch around the tongue, but the first hitch should be turned the other way so that the line crosses the cleat like the crossing turns, instead of being led down one side of the cleat. I remember one of my classmates in a sailing course at the San Diego Naval Sailing Club getting marked down for that mistake.

I am really surprised at the errors in thus film.
@DavidLDFL3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the cleat hitch is bad too. But the reef knot works quite well when it's of the same diameter. It's really when two different diameters are used that it becomes an issue. That being said I'd never use a reef knot for extreme loads or when my life was literally on the line.
