Hi,whats your recommendation for hook size to breaking strain of line and length ? I have had many lost fish from shop bought pre tied banded rigs these last 3 years,i honestly think being short at 3.5 inches or 4 inches means the line loses its shock absorbing ability. Where possible i have tried and had had great results with the guru elasticated method feeder,with a 6 inch hook link ,not lost one on that set up,but not all fisheries permit the elasticated feeder.

Hi Gary ! First of all thanks for commenting, this is a great question over the last 2 years I have been upping the breaking strain of my method feeder hooklengths. Like yourself I have lost fish using too light a hooklink to withstand the bolt of the fish (these are probably really decent carp) . You are right the short hooklinks don’t stretch so they just give. I use 12lb to size 12/10 hooks now and 8lb through winter . The marginally thicker line doesn’t put the fish off . I look more at line diameter now than breaking strain, a lot of these companies advertise a high breaking strain but low line thickness however they take the stretch out of the mono when they do this. That puts more stress on the knots. I have also experimented with fluorocarbon which is a little thicker but stronger ! Yes elastic can take a lot off stress from the line and would be my preferred method, but like you say most fisheries don’t permit it. I also now set my drag a lot lower 👌🏻👍🏻 with this combination of changes I expect to lose less fish next year. Hope that helps!

Might be controversial but, I use the baitrunner on the back of my reel, to take the initial shock. After I pick up the rod,I lock the baitrunner and rely on front drag and playing the fish (carp) to land the fish.

Definitely not Controversial John! No right or wrong way to fish in my opinion. This is a good idea. I also do this but when I’m fishing methods on bite-alarms!

@@WestysAngling so refreshing to hear from someone else who isn’t put in, or stuck in a fishing category. It’s great to experiment with different types of fishing, then put them together for something that works .

Totally agree, I get people commenting on my videos saying things should be done this way or that way. It isn’t the case. I think Match fishing and big money making companies force people into the mindset that things have to be done a certain way, as long as I’m Catching I am happy. Experimentation is part of the enjoyment of fishing for me👌🏻👍🏻

Question for you westy can i use a longer hooklenth on a hybrid feeder ? Same as a cage feeder ! Curious not putting bait in the hybrid feeder trying to get all bait to the bottom
@WestysAngling
@WestysAngling 5 ай бұрын
You could go slightly longer and see if it makes a difference, but definitely not longer than 6 inch 👍🏻

Great video. I have a trip planned and worms and prawns are very productive for carp and tench could I use these for a hookbait with method feeder? Is there actually any bait shouldn't use with method?
@WestysAngling
@WestysAngling Жыл бұрын
Worms and prawns can be awkward on the method feeder. Sections of prawns hair-rigged would be fine but it’s a very soft bait. Can be tricky !

Hi there, great video as always. Very clearly presented, thank you :) I am still new to fishing and just about to start trying to tie my own method rigs, so your video is just what I'm after. Two quick questions please: 1) I have been looking at Guru micro bait bands on amazon and they come in 2mm and 4mm. Which do you recommend for wafters? 2) Looking at rig tubing, does it come in different diameters or is it just standard? Two newbie questions :P Thank you and cheers, John.

Either 2mm or 4mm will be fine ! Guru ones are really strong ! 8mm wafters your probably better with the 4mm 👍🏻 I think it’s the guru macro rig tubing I use 👌🏻

I used to use hair rigs but baiting up is a bit of a faf! Much more efficient with the band I think that’s why I stick to it! You can also band Perry much anything but boilies 👌🏻👍🏻 thanks for commenting Trevor!

You can use whatever you like buddy! Though others would tell you differently, there are no rules when it comes to fishing. The only difference between guru nguage is it’s a very thin line diameter so apparently harder to detect 👌🏻

@@WestysAngling thanks, just started tying my own, I suppose the thinner line would thread through the eye of the hook easier too, I’m using 12 lb hook lengths To 15 lb mainline, size 12 hook. Sounds like heavy gear I know, but I just keep upgrading the breaking stains till the breakage stop. Lol. The carp round here fight like mad, especially the ones around 7lb.Thanks for the instructions.
