Struggling to Tie Your Own Rigs? ➡️ This One’s Easy and Reusable!

This multi rig gives you the benefits of the blowback rig, the slip-D rig and the multi rig without any of the downsides.
Through my experience as a fishery owner, I see many anglers struggling to tie their own rigs and if you are fishing a venue with a hard gravel bottom then a ready made rig will be useless after just one cast. This rig is a variation of the multi rig so it’s really easy to tie and re-usable. You only have to master one knot: the overhand loop knot. Unlike a traditional multi rig, it’s made with braid so you can easily put it into a solid PVA bag and you'll get a good presentation over a wide variety of bottom types even if you’re not a great caster. You can use the material time and time again and spend your money on the most important items in any carp angler's tackle box: the hooks.

If you struggle to tie your own rigs or you want to move away from ready made rigs, this one is for you. It's based on the multi rig so it’s easy to tie and you can re-use the material time and time again and just change your bait and your hook. Great video again Matt. I was a big fan of Kevin’s original blowback rig from the first time he showed it on a dvd. Used it for years. The combination here of that,the slip D and multi is definitely one I will be trying. Having baits ready to go with the mono loops is a great advantage. My club lakes you can end up getting hammered by bream at times so this combination of rig and bait attachment is perfect for quick,easy changes of hook and or bait. Hi Paul, great that you see the potential in the rig. If you can get a nice fit between the inline lead insert and the lead then you can add a 2nd 'tell tale', just tie some floss on the swivel and tuck it up inside the lead. If the floss is out, then you’ve definitely been done 100%. Using a brand new razor sharp hook every cast makes a massive difference. This for me, is the biggest edge that many overlook. Sharp hooks are harder to eject and with double confirmation of whether you are being done you should be able to prove this to yourself. If your’re casting then I would recommend you fold the rig into a solid PVA bag to guarantee it lands right 100% of the time. Enjoy, Matt.

I had tied multirig with braid but always thought this suxs as it just collapsed so easily. But as most carp rig components are not available in the USA. After watching this I di this using use a small piece of coffee stirrer. Really like your videos.

Yes, I’m sure finding the right bits is a real challenge in the US. If you could use a small rubber bead and pierce it crossways with a sharp needle, that would also work. Plenty of options :)

Hi Mark, thanks very much for your support as always. I basically use as large as I can get away with i.e. something in the 3-4 oz range. The only time I’d drop down is if I was fishing a spot that required me to make a very discrete underarm cast and I wanted minimal plop. Then I’d drop to 1.25oz but TBH that scenario is rare. Thanks Michal. Well, there are various circumstances when I wouldn't use this rig in favour of the classic D-rig. I’m currently fishing with the humble D-rig (new version) on the river and this multi rig would be a disaster in flowing water! Horses for courses in this game 😉

With this rig I use a wide gape style inturned eye hook and a pre made kicker to hold the loop In place. A bait screw to hold my hookbait makes the attachment easy. I rarely use just braid for this rig, I tie a doubled over Albright knot of some braid to a fluorocarbon boom to kick the rig away and make it nearly invisible

Hi Paul, thanks very much for the support mate. No, normal rig tubing won’t work for this trick. You need a soft silicon based material that grips the braid. I designed the rig to work specifically with the Nash blowback tubes but it can also work with small hook bead or 3mm bore beads. You get 50 tubes in a packet and can use them multiple times so one packet will last you quite a while. Hi mate, in my testing, the 2 best knots are the 5 turn uni knot (single grinner) and the palomar knot. You’ll find it difficult to tighten down the double grinner. Loop to loop with a figure of 8 knot works OK but I’d only use it with solid PVA bags as it’s not as strong as the 5 turn uni knot. Hello Matthew, I was never “convinced” of a running lead didn’t think it would “hook” the fish right. I took a gamble this week and assembled this rig, easy, and used a 87gram inline lead and what happened I caught 2 big carp on it bottom bait style and they were nailed!! I am convinced! Funny that both takes were violent but after that the fish moved like a bag of cement until near the net lol😅

Hi mate, you can use whatever braid you want and I’m sorry if I didn't make that clear enough in the video. You don’t have to buy a special braid for this rig, it's just that that braid has the properties I need for the type of fishing we do here. The lake has a hard rocky bottom and we have carp to 53lbs and catfish to 135lbs so we need something really robust. Hope that helps clear things up. Cheers, Matt.

I tried it this weekend on a helicoper setup - 20 cm hook link - here my statistics: Losses: 1x, Know when I am done: 3x (so GREAT), Fish & all hooked in the bottom lip: 4x. It really helps having a dyneema leader instead those melting very smooth ones. I fished it with crank choddy and crank x from Korda. worked for both when the loop sleeve is a bit longer (till hook point) for having a larger hook loop. Thank you so much for this rig! :-D

Great to hear, glad you’re happy with it! Personally, I wouldn’t choose this rig for a helicopter lead system as supple braids are prone to tangle. This rig was originally designed to be fished with an inline running lead inside a solid PVA bag. This creates a tangle proof presentation that the carp find difficult to deal with and should reduce the number of times you’re being done 😊

@@horstelvis83 To decide between a running rig and a helicopter rig, I make some casts with a leading rod and feel the lead down so that I know what I’m fishing over. As long as I get some kind of drop, even a soft one, I use a running rig. If I can’t feel much of anything at all, I’d use a solid PVA bag instead of a helicopter rig, personal preference 😊

The benefit of being able to change the hook so easily has sold me this rig, plus simply using mono rather than rig rings or micro swivels saves £££ on components , does exactly the same job, and less clutter can only make it slightly harder for the carp to identify. Hi mate, it’s on our to-do list to make a video on which rig to use where so we will get around to it at some point. The blowout multi rig is great for anyone that struggles to tie the knotless knot or anglers that are pressed for time and prefer a reusable rig where the hooks can be swapped quickly. It’s best used in a solid PVA bag or in a bait boat or rowing boat. It can be cast at short/medium range but beyond that it’s best to boat it or bag it. You need to use a high quality braid like the Armourlink as the rig is reused many times. Cheap braids will wear quickly and cost you a fish. The rig was specifically created for our guests because literally anyone can tie it. It’s very strong and has even banked 3 figure catfish. It can be fished over hard or soft ground. The mono hair is good for anglers that enjoy rig tying as each rig is pretty much a one shot deal i.e. catch a carp, throw it away (that’s why I use mono to keep the costs down). It’s cheap, simple and can even be tied without the use of specialist hooklink materials. It’s also very anti-tangle and so perfect for casting at maximum range. It’s impervious to the attention of nuisance species. It’s not suitable for use in a solid PVA and is better suited to being fished over a firm bottom. It can be fished over silt but you actually should use a much shorter hooklink. Although I have caught catfish on it, it's not really tough enough for the job unless you use really heavy mono which can cause problems with bait mounting. For me this means it suits my public water or river carping better than the blowout multi. Both rigs work, both catch carp. You just need to decide which is going to suit your angling better. Thank you for the feedback. You can use a regular twister but the eye is smaller and it can be a bit fiddly. If you're using one in a smaller size, it can be fiddly to thread a loop of hook link through the eye. This problem is common with any in turned eye hook. The chod pattern has a larger eye.

Hi again, I understand why you might believe that the carp in Asia behave differently but in my honest opinion, this is not the case. All carp originated from Asia. The biology is the same and so are the needs of the carp. Carp are omnivores and will basically eat anything. Baits such as sweetcorn, maize, chickpeas, tigernuts are all good options and relatively cheap. If you can buy (or make) some boilies, then even better as these are more selective. Don’t worry about fancy flavours. Anything sweet, salty, fishy, or nutty will work. I don’t worry about bait flavour. I just use what I have access to. They all work! Learn to focus on hook sharpness and use simple, strong and effective rigs, fished on a running lead and you’ll do just great. It’s all that matters really. Best of luck, Matt.

Hi Nicolas, with an inline lead, when the line breaks, the line pulls through the lead very quickly. So in the worst case, the carp is towing a rig and some mainline. Then, if you use barbless hooks, the carp can very easily get rid of the rig. So for me, an inline lead setup combined with a barbless hook is one of the safest setups to use. Cheers, Matt

Hi Dave, it’s not strictly necessary as you are using a supple braided material but out-turned eyed hooks (chod style) have a larger eye (size for size) than in-turned eyed hooks so you may find it hard to thread a loop of braid through. Hi Paul, glad you enjoy the channel! That's’ a great question… Crimps have never been part of my angling and TBH I doubt they ever will be. I’ve met a number of guests that have asked me whether it’s okay to use crimps at my lake and my standard response is “sure, as long as they pass my 8kg deadlift test”. This is part of the fishery rules due to the number of 3 figure cats we have. One failed with virtually zero force. Most break very easily, none have come close to passing my test which is why I don’t use them. If you are fishing for doubles and twenties then you aren’t using much force to land them anyway (usually sub 3lbs) and sure they work. My concern is that if an angler is using them because they’re struggling to tie a good knot, that doesn't necessarily make them good at crimping either and the concept of testing the strength of the finished result seems alien to many guys I meet. They simply assume that 20lb material is good for 20lbs regardless of the crimp. I know some anglers struggle with knots so if this keeps them fishing then I get it. Hi there, it depends how you attach your PVA stick. If you make up a PVA stick using a fine stick mix and thread the stick onto the hooklink, and you can do it without messing up the D, then this can work but it’s not something I do. The other option is to make a up a PVA mesh bag, thread some PVA tape through the bag and then tie it through the D section. What you don’t want to do is to hook the PVA mesh bag onto the hook and cast it out. What happens is that on impact with the water the mesh bag will completely close down the D as it pulls on the hook. It’s not the end of the world but it completely changes the size of the D and where the bait sits on the back of the hook rather than at the bottom of the bend which is where I want it. This rig was designed to be used in a bait boat or dropped from a rowing boat or in a solid PVA bag or to be cast out on its own without any PVA mesh bag. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, so that’s the large Nash Box Logic tackle box. I have the loaded version so it comes with a loads of smaller boxes which fit perfectly into the system. The Tackle box then fits into one half of the XL workbox to create an all in one tackle storage solution. Hi Wayne, I totally understand why it’s not working. The holes in the Fox leads are too big for those inserts. One option is… don’t worry about it! For the last couple of months I’ve been fishing without a shock effect, with a pure running rig, and been catching well. If you want to create a little shock effect with the Fox leads, try replacing the Nash insert with whatever tail rubbers you have to hand, you might find one that works better.

Hi Ryan, you’ll find that the blowback tubes have a thicker wall and are more robust than the silicon, I find they grip the braid better than the silicon sleeve. You’ll also find that they last longer and are better suited to the larger eye diameter of a chod style hook. Small 3mm hook beads or bore beads work okay but they don’t grip as well as the blowback tubes. There’s nothing wrong with starting off with a bit of silicon tube to see how you get on before running out to the shops to buy a pack of blowback tubes though. Cheers, Matt.

Hi Keith, yes it’s absolutely possible to make a proper combination multi rig with this setup for sure. You can also do it with a material such as Skinlink which is a kevlar cored coated braid. Just strip off 10cm for the loop and job done. Bear in mind that it is hard work to strip. I broke my Korda stripper on Skinlink lol. Hi matt. Thanks for all you tips. I've learnt loads. Recently I've been fishing a drainage sewer , where I've seen monster carp . It's extremely narrow , 12ft or so , and weedy. Maybe 5ft deep . There's a few clear spots in the weed . The bait is practically under the rod tip . Been using a naked helicopter rig with maize . I've had a take , but the fish spat me out . Hi mate, thanks for commenting and great to know that you’ve picked up some tips. I guess if it's weedy then the water is clear? I’m not sure that I’d use a heli setup in these circumstances. I’d probably use a dedicated weed lead clip to drop the lead immediately on the take. I hate doing this but sometimes it’s the only way. Is there any flow? If so I would try and fish up-tide style as the line lay will be better. Line lay is going to be the biggest problem. I’d probably get in the waders, clear a spot and clear a path that I could lay the line through neatly. It’s time and effort but if they are worth it then why not? You also need to get some bait going in regularly to build their confidence. I would use 10m of 30lbs (0.50) Nash heavy duty snag leader and I’d fish that straight down to the clip. It’s nice and clear and low viz and very robust. I use it all the time on the rivers. If it’s really gnarly then I use the 40lbs (0.60) version. On the rig front I’d use something simple and robust like my river rig. No how-to on this (yet) but here’s the short to give you a quick spec: kzbin.infoCh032Nsihcc?feature=share. Hi there, I don’t use curved shank hooks anymore (watch this video to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKmqnZ-MZ7-Wa9E) but even if I used them, I wouldn’t use them for a popup because they “sit” at the wrong angle. For a popup, you need a short shank, straight point hook with a decent size gape. I use the Nash chod twisters and they work great. In fact, I use them for popups, bottom baits and wafters. Hi Ivan, you're absolutely right. If you choose to leave the bait off before you make the loop to loop connection then loop size can be anything you want it to be. I choose to make the loop exactly the same size because that way if I make up some loops in advance, it doesn't matter which way round I use them. It’s just another way of eliminating the chance of getting things wrong. I also prefer to mount my bait before loop to looping them to a swivel. At the end of the day it’s personal preference. Hi Peter, the palm test is far from perfect. I had to use it in this video as it was the only way to demonstrate how the rig, tied the other way, turns away from the carp's mouth. The palm test should work okay with supple braided materials but it’s not great with stiffer material for sure. It's by no means the be all and end all of whether a rig will work in a real fishing situation. Palm testing of my mono hair rig is very hit and miss and yet the rig catches carp very well and I’m always getting anglers comment how well it works in a real fishing situation. Good hook sharpening takes a lot of time and practice and if done wrong, could make your hooks worse. I am fairly new to carp fishing. Currently, I have been using method feeders both fixed and free running inline one's. I wish to up my game and want to try some of your rigs. However, they all seem to use braid, which is banned on most of the lakes I fish, both as a mainline and hook line, also the maximum size hook to use is 10. Can you create your rigs with mono or fluro without any problems. Most of the lakes have fish no bigger than about 30lb. Any advice you can give would be gratefully received and appreciated. Hi Steve when you say fixed method feeder I assume that you mean a semi fixed method feeder otherwise it would pose a tether risk to the carp. It’s great that you’d like to try some of my rigs. Although you’ve commented here on one of my braided rigs, I'm a big fan of mono and there are a number of mono rigs on this channel. I’ll also be doing some more mono rigs in the future so do subscribe and hit that bell 😊 If hook size is limited to 10’s then you need to use a really good quality, sharp and strong carp hook like the Nash Chod Twister (I know plenty of size 10s that would open out on a good 30!). This winter I had carp to 53 on a size 8’s so they’ll be perfect for the job. The hook is the most important bit so spend all your money on hooks and change them very very regularly. We have guys here get through 4 packets a week! My advice would be to forget about fluoro and use mono instead. Nash have just released a 15lb version of the Zig-Flo. Again I tested it this winter for bottom bait fishing in the 12lbs and banked some very big carp on it. It’s robust, and knots very well so the 15lbs version will handle anything you encounter very easily. The Zig -Flo is far cheaper than any fluoro and comes on 100m spools. My mono rigs are designed to be disposable so after one carp I bin them. If you’re worried about buoyancy just add a touch of putty or a small sinker. The reason why I didn't go into any detail on that subject is that I don’t believe there is much to say. The reason why I use blow back tubes for this rig is that, due to their length, they grip the braid strongly and can withstand the rigours of being slid back and forth multiple times. If you use hook beads, they may not grip the braid as strongly (they tend to be shorter). Therefore will become looser, quicker than the blowout tubes so you’ll need to change them sooner. For me, the fractional change in shape of the D between various different types of beads or tubes doesn't make any difference. Cheers, Matt.

Rig looks good. However, I am interested in one crucial aspect. What if (when casting your line) the boilie will go over the blow out tube, getting stucked close to the eye of the hook and having a horrible presentation on the bottom, not to mention the mechanic will change also.

Hi mate, I understand your concern but as long as you set it in the correct position to start with and the blowback tube is directly behind the eye, it will not move on the cast because the impact load of the water is placed on the boilie and it locks it in place so it can’t move. What you must not do is attach a PVA mesh bag to the hook. This will cause the blowback tube to slide on impact with the water and ruin the presentation. If you’re still worried, test it yourself and you’ll see exactly what I mean 👍

It's a great question and it's one I ask myself too. I used 35lb in this video because it's the hook link we recommend to guests at the venue as we have cats up to 100lbs. Armourlink is available in 15lb, 20lb and 25lb and any of those would work too. If you use a thinner braid, use the smallest size of blow back tube or it won't grip the material. Cheers, Matt

In coarse fishing you would always have the hooklink the same strength or weaker than the mainline but in carp fishing we don’t worry so much about whether the hooklink is stronger than the mainline as long as the lead can either eject safely off a lead clip or, as is my preference, use a simple running ledger (inline or swivel).

Hi mate, I'll put my answer here as well. It’s very much a case of “horses for courses” with knots! Every material is different and responds differently when knotted. Diameter is also a factor. That’s why I’m so specific about what knot I use for each job on each rig on the channel. On this rig, the blowback multi, I use two single overhand loops (not double). I do this because this thick braided material grips itself very strongly and you simply don’t need anything more complicated than an overhand loop knot. If you try to do that knot in a lightweight mono it will slip and fail because the mono does not grip itself. That’s where the non-slip mono loop knot comes in. I’ve never mastered the perfection loop, so I don’t use it! When I test the figure of eight loop against the non slip mono loop knot, the non-slip mono loop knots wins (for me). Knots are tricky!

Hi mate, I wouldn't use this rig in flowing water unless the flow was really slow. Supple braid is more prone to tangling in flowing water and there are usually other species present (crayfish, bream, chub etc.) than can mess with a rig like this. If you want to use a multi rig in flowing water I would change the hooklink material to a coated braid like Nash Skinlink in 25lbs. I’d tie this the same way but there’s no need for the blowout tube. I wouldn't strip any of the coating back at all, just leave it whole. Do you mean the mono bait loop? If you set the rig up as shown you should not have any issues. The bait loop won’t move on the cast as it’s pulling the loop tight which locks it in place. The only time that the loop may slide onto the blowback tube is if the carp picks up and ejects the rig. In which case you’ve been done and the fact that the D has closed down tells you this. I have never seen the mono bait loop go over the blowback tube in my own fishing and I’ve had guests using this rig for 4 years.

Can I ask, I’ve used a over hand knot for years when making my rigs but started to see a lot of people using the figure of 8 knot? Due think there’s any benefit or not.

Hi mate, thanks for commenting. That’s a great question. Different knots suit different materials. I can get away with a basic overhand knot in this material because it’s super strong and is capable of landing cats to well over 100lbs. Yes I could use a figure of 8 but it’s slower to tie and more difficult to achieve regular loop sizes. Would it be a stronger knot? Maybe. Do I need a stronger knot? No. If the simple overhand knot is working for you in the material you are using then personally I don’t see the need to change unless you experience a failure at this point. My motto is test and test again so just get a weight and give the knot a lift. 10lb should be the minimum knot strength for carp fishing IMO. Hope that helps, Matt.

@@matthewcollinsangler thanks for the reply, and to be honest never failed on me yet myself but when you keep on seeing people do something different it makes ya doubt it, I’ve started on a new members lake and it’s full of cats hence properly have more a chance of catching them then the carp 😂
