How to tie Spade End hooks with a hook tyer

I've used the drennan hooktyer for years, I prefer it to the Matchman hooktyer but until watching this. Ive never noticed that the line pulls through like that. Mind boggling, why haven't I noticed 👍👏👏👏

You cannot do this on a hook that is already hair stop rigged on the hook ? I would think I would need to tye a knot onto the spade eye itself ? My fingers are like sausages

Hello Adam, Yes the Drennan (ex-Delco) is excellent. Although the Matchman type tie exactly the same 2 knots. Both hooktyers can tie 2 slightly different knots. It just depends on whether you trap the line immediately under the spade and whip down the shank (2 lengths of line trapped under) or trap the line farther down the shank and whip up (1 length of line trapped under). I like the Drennan (obviously !) as I use the brass pin to place the hook around after whipping to tighten up against. Richard

hi there thanks for this. I had a go today and found that it was near impossible to whip down the shank as the line always wanted to start at the bottom. I've therefore whipped bottom to top - they seem ok but is that an issue please?

It’s much better if you can whip the line down the hook shank rather than up. Maybe try practicing with a bigger hook. The main trick is trapping the line together at the top of the shank with the line leaving the hook underneath the spade. Cheers James

I think I'm going to change how my son and I tie our hooks. We use these hook tying tools, but we can have 3 hooks per line, so I'm going to snell 3 hooks in line and hope more bait = better scent for the catfish to find.

Why not just buy eyed hooks and use a snell knot?

You could. But choices of eyed hooks are very limited when you want to use something light & fine. At that end of the hook scale spade ends have much more choice and variety.

Jeez. Why use a hook tie gimmick? Easy as F to just make a loop, and wrap the line down the shank, and pass the tag end through the loop.

Make it with 16 or 18 size hook, and 0.10 line, when you need to do it fast...this thing makes things easy.

Not that simple ,mate! Tying by hand is great,and best imho,because the line doesn t touches anything,but your skin,but, with smaller hooks,you cant keep the coils perfectly tight,which makes for a bad knot. For guys like me, with very big hands ,it becomes exponentially harder,so this tool comes in handy,and it creates a perfect knot. Cheers!
