I love the Knot videos. My kids have watched them and I gotta tell you they know them better than me. So do us a favor keep them coming. Thanks again guys.

I really love going back and watching your older videos. "Thank you" for you making them. Yours is the way I was taught the bowline in boyscouts as a kid back in the 70's. The bowline is a handy sailing knot, but I agree it is not the only knot or even one of the most used knots on the boat. I think it is an even more handy knot on a construction site as we are always making a "choke" when lifting objects and a loop on a line is essential to making a choker, then a few half-hitches following the choker helps stabilize a crane lift 'round a longer load like a bundle of conduit or steel struts. Usually with crane lifts we use listed load-straps with loops, but a choker is still used with two matching straps. We have saying in construction rigging which is "choke everything but a man." It's a much safer way to lift something since it is less likely to slip out especially when lifted overhead by a crane or other overhead hoist. Stuff falling on workers is always a very bad thing. Back to the bowline, In our sailing club we have a different way of teaching this knot. We teach the "from the load" method so that the loop can be oriented either way hen tying it. A lot of left-handed people have a problem with the tree and the roots going "under" the loop. We have found making the loop ambidextrous actually helps people visualize the knot and the "little person in the lifejacket" a lot better. I'm not the best teacher of the knot because I'm so used to doing it the "muscle memory" way which is not as helpful to teach the bowline to newbies, so I made this video to help myself to improve in teaching the bowline a few years back. I've had to teach this knot to hundreds of people at our sailing club since I made this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3zan2WZiNRljtU

When I teach the rabbit story bowline I say that the tree needs to be planted in the ground. Your explanation, with the roots, is the first I've heard of someone explaining that step similarly! :-)

Very well done! The analysis of structure is key. I prefer the "sailor method." You must have one heck of a big jib!

Good instructional video, I have watched dozens of youtube demonstrations, but this is the best one I've seen. Why do women explain things better than men?

Great bowline teaching method......I haven't heard the term 'marlin spike' for so long, I should get on a sailing boat more often :o)))) You did ask for viewer's favourite knots - well I only discovered the constrictor knot quite late, and what a knot ! You can use it as an emergency pipe clip apparently :o) It's my replacement clove hitch now.... Oh, I just noticed this knot is in your '5 essential sailing knot' vid too, doh! Well, we think alike then :o) . Dave in Wales

Awesome way to remember! Please do a video about what you might use a bowline for though, I'm clueless.
@MorseAlphaExpeditions9 жыл бұрын
+aletoledo1 Yeah great idea. We use it for a few things, but never docklines. We think that's it's most misused application.
@Two-aboard-tuuli9 жыл бұрын
+aletoledo1 We use it to attach the jib sheets to the headsail. Use it whenever you need a non-closing loop.
@emilybh62557 жыл бұрын
aletoledo1- Use a bowline whenever you want to make sure the knot won't come undone such as tying up to a line from another boat or tying a dinghy up somewhere.

Hey do you know the secret of getting rat lines or lashed teak not to slip down side stays. You are awesome. So glad to see you still doing your thing. You inprired me to start my channel. Peace be your Journey.

nice demo there. the ways to tie a bowline knot are manifold and some tie them religiously in certain ways. the standard way as you showed is OK, it traps the bitter end from coming lose on a pole for instance. but it can come lose on ring loads! tie it the Dutch way with the bitter end on the outside and this problem is gone. but some say that the end might get caught this way. both knots are dangerous when using hard smooth ropes, like in climbing though, so never use it when going up the mast. sail safe ;)

Love it! But, as mentioned, the first time the knot is demo'd, it's probably best to tie it correctly. Afterwards, it might be helpful to go through the potential pitfalls. You only get one first chance to create a memory of the correct sequence of actions. Love it anyway, thank you.

Showing how not to do it , is not positive teaching..... just confuses the learning mode...stay true to the correct way...only..
