It is a common custom to not wash any belt no matter the color. It is my understanding that to wash the belt is symbolic of washing out all the hard work that was done while wearing it. I am sure with modern materials and modern customs washing a belt would not be a big deal at all but some practitioners like myself enjoy sticking to that older tradition. When I look at the older rank belts I have and see the dirt and stains on them it actually makes me remember all the hard work I did.

Hopefully you are having a good experience! I find that I judge myself the most harsh, and if you are similar, one of our biggest challenges is to let go of those inhibitions and not fear what others think. It can prevent us from trying new things or keep us from improving ourselves. What I used to do is, no matter how nervous I was, concerned about getting embarrassed or fearful of failing I would try and volunteer to be first demonstrating something, doing a poomse in front of everyone, or sparring. It really helped to just do it. What matters is you become a better you in the process. Next thing you know you'll be competing for medals!
