Just proves that professionals don't know everything. Thanks to another's comment, I noticed she was indeed holding her rope in circles that could wrap around her hands if the horse freaked out and pulled. I also noticed that she clipped the lead rope onto the horse's halter so that little knob you press down to open its clip might dig into or hit the horse's chin. I was taught to put the curved smooth side of the clip against the horse's chin when attaching a lead rope to his halter. As for the knots, I agree that quick release slip knots are best. I knew a horse that, in its younger years, used to hate being tied. Once she freaked out and pulled back so hard, she nearly pulled the metal ring out of the barns' secure wooden post, and her butt was only inches from sitting down on the ground. Good thing I'd used a slip knot. Pass the rope around the ring, post, tree, or whatever you use. Take the rope leading to the horse and twist it into a loop close to the post, make a bunny ear with the free end of the rope, poke it through the loop with a safe length still hanging down for you to grab, and pull on the horse's end of rope to tighten it, snugging it up to the post. And no matter how hard your horse pulls, you should just give a quick tug and the rope comes undone.

I've always tied my horse with a quick release, except for the one time someone else tied him and we were at a show. He was standing in the wash area on concrete, he spooked, slipped on the wet concrete and wet down, crashing into my knee before dangling from his head. Witnesses saw, one went running for their knife while we frantically were able to get him released, I think we ended up getting his whole halter off. Never EVER tie your horse with anything other than a quick release knot!

the bank robber knot is the best knot to use. one pull of the tail and it will come completely undone in case the horse gets spooked.

I use a safe release knot. That way if he spooks, I can pull the end of the rope and it come undone. It would take too long to undo this rope and he could hurt himself or you.

I agree. Quick release knot is the way to go. Those other knots are good for tying up a saddle to trees or gear, but not for a living animal.

I think quick releases are far safer. My sister's horse sometimes freaks out, and rears and goes nuts when he's tied. He's tied with only a few inches with slack, yet he's come close to getting himself hurt. A quick release, to me, is a lot safer for both the horse's well-being and the humans. :)

No kidding. If the horse got in trouble how is she going to get him loose ? Nothing short of a knife in her pocket to cut the tightly tied rope !

The second knot is not a "Bowline". There are several knots called "Single carrick bend", this is one of them. This knot is the typical "Jamming knot", becomes very difficult to untie after tied strongly. By the way, the name of this knot in Japanese is "Onna musubi" (女結び, means female knot). Or, "Otoko musubi" (男結び, means Male knot). (Does anyone know the name in English?)

@@chaikagome9725 You're welcome. There is another "imitation bowline" which is less secure, but useful if the line is under tension. You go through the nipping loop only once, then tie a half-hitch on the standing end. Here's an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haO0kIKXmdKYnJY (the links points to a specific point in the video) The whole video is very interesting too, for other reasons.

She also did not tie the bowline properly. Where she fead the last step she should have come up through the hole not down. The know will potentially never come un done, however if the horse pulls the line really tight..... good luck getting it untied with out a knife or a hammer. Lol

With both of these knots the handler cannot get them undone if the horse is pulling in panic.. Pruning shears or a sharp knife are needed to free the horse.

When one ties a horse, the horse should have been trained to tie and stand calmly. Only tie to a secure tie point. Get rid of the web halters. Use a rope halter. Use good quality sail line for the lead line. Tie the proper knot. And you are good to go. It is a process. Take the time it takes.

Interesting that the knot this woman calls a "bowline" is not at all. I'm not sure WHAT kind of knot she tied but it most certainly is NOT a bowline. As a rock & ice climber for over 30 years my life depends on a properly tied bowline. As a horsewoman for 50 years I know the good and bad knots to use!

Why are people obsessed with having a horse NOT break free if it pulls back? The safest way to tie a horse is to teach him to stand patiently, accept pressure, and THEN tie him to twine so he can break free and not panic IF he does pull back. It's a danger to both horse and handler to have a horse tied in such a way that it needs to be physically untied by someone should he pull. Just my opinion that I developed after years of crawling under many types of horses in many situations as a farrier.

Great idea to tie him to the stall due to the stability of the bar set in concrete...UNLESS he happens to rear and his foot should get between the bar and the stall wall. I would never tie a horse there.

People should be teaching their horses to tie AFTER they know how to stand still and not feel trapped. But - if you set up your horse so that if he pulls he breaks free, that's what he learns. "If I pull, I can get away." You want strong enough rope and halters that if he pulls he'll just get uncomfortable and realize, "Oh. This isn't getting me anywhere, maybe it's not the right answer."

That's not a bowline. She needs to look at any diagram of an authentic bowline. The free end needs to finish back UP through the 'rabbit hole', not down. It forms a bight around the 'lead' (standing) line. A bowline is simply a half-hitch around a bight that forms a fixed loop. She doesn't understand what she's doing...she's just copying someone else's (wrong) motions.

You do not tie to a stall wall., We have too many bent bars in the barn because boarders don't have a clue, You also do not single tie with a halter if the horse is iffy,, Use a neck rope weither height and arms length to something solid and let the horse figure it out

Why would you tie a horse where if it freaks out and the horse still tied up? Wouldn’t it be smart to tie a horse but still has a way to break free? Not very smart. I ALWAYS have my horse tied to where if it freaks I can break rope free in one pull. Common sense and I’m not a aqha member nor do I show.

Lot a haters on the comments. If you know so much why are you watching such a basic video? That being said... yeah as others have pointed out that is not a bowline. A bowline looks like a little guy with a life jacket on when done properly. Unless the horse is immature or has a pull back problem I feel like the rope doesn't even need to be that secured. Unless I am stopped near a highway I want my horse to be able to break away if she really thinks she needs to.

Says dont make your horses halter too tight - halter on this horse is too tight. Dont use frayed ropes - uses a frayed rope Says this knot wont get too tight - bullshit Says tie to a secure point - ties to a loose stall wall, waiting for disaster Says oh this bar is secured in concrete - then proceeds to wiggle the bar Says dont tie low or loose so your horse can get his foot stuck - ties next to a aluminum bar that the horse can definitely get his foot over and cause a train wreck. Geez, AQHA, get some professional help!
