When my brother in law passed suddenly, I too was asked to make an urn for his ashes. I am more of a wood guy than metal {so far} and I really wanted something nice for him. As I was putting it together and listening to the old motown music he loved. I never cried so hard in my life. But, at the same time it brought me a certain peace and acceptance about the whole thing. So, I kind of have an Idea of what this must have been like for you. As sad as it is, I hope you were able to find some peace and happiness in this project as I did in mine.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. It would be an honour to build an urn for his remains. I plan to turn out some small ones for my ashes,to go on key rings. I still want to ride around after im gone. Karl, that turned out awesome, what a way to honour Woody!

Why are so many people confused about silicon bronze ? I love it when used in its purpose..! I wouldn’t weld up a chrome moly cage with it but sure does work great for filling spots in bumpers before you send them out for chroming ect… This was a great tribute to Woody because its custom one of a kind! 😊🏁

That looks beautiful. The clear coat brightened up the old paint and enhanced the contrast between that and the bare metal. The overall texture with raw weld bead and everything else looks really sharp! At least on camera.

Music at @41:00 is giving me real Cowboy Bebop vibes.. anyway, after my Dad passed I bought a length of 6" dia 304 tube and end caps with the intention of making an urn he'd have liked, because the funeral home was only able to supply a carboard one - he's been sat on my Mum's sideboard for a year now, though, and I don't know how to bring up moving him after all that time. You did a wonderful thing, Karl.

For future reference, those valve covers would also make a very nice lamp base. 100% agree, when you stopped trying to totally clean them, the 'been around the block' look is killer. The Cadillac name doesn't hurt! I could think of way more boring urns to remain in for eternity. Nice job.

Cool project! If you don't already have some, grab some small Stainless steel wire brushes (About the size of a toothbrush) to brush your welds as you go to keep the weld area nice and clean. I mark the brushes, one for aluminum, stainless, and regular steel to eliminate cross contamination.

I set my Tig to pulse weld and weld almost everything on a one pulse per second setting. You get into a really nice heart beat rhythm, and also it’s super handy when welding thin steel butt joints, as it’s gentle and doesn’t burn through so much and I don’t feel like I’m rushing so much. It also facilitates that stack of dimes look.

A very underutilized technique is using silver solder. Silver solder is actually braze. It is a bit of a misnomer, but it flows and whets in between joints like a solder but has the strength of braze. It is what the carbide saw teeth and machine tooling is brazed on with, so it definitely has the strength. It works very well to adhere sheet metal panels together. This would have worked well on the art deco base. It would have both brazed them together very strong and also left a nice silver-bronze patina in between the layers. I think it would've looked nice.

Excellent work and amazing tribute to your friends!!!! Also luv how you show your struggles with welding, for some like me who is self teaching to weld, the struggle is real!!! Thx for doing what u do❤
@CapnCrusty Жыл бұрын
If the base metal melts it's welding, if not it's brazing. Silica is silicon dioxide, the grit in cheap sandpaper, in brazing rods the element silicon is used. BTW, take a look at Manganese bronze because it's stronger than some low carbon steel welds but it's still brazing. I would have turned those base plates with the chamfers down to provide some visually interesting shadow lines between layers, but your project is still a mighty fine tribute to your friend. 👍

Nice Karl!!!! You are not supposed to "Climb" with a router, or you run the risk of it jerking away from you. I will do it anyway on wood to reduce the risk of "tear out". I think you probably noticed that when it tried to take off on you. Anyway, that is a super awesome Urn. See you next time!!!

Great work Karl! The only comment I would have is that I hope you sprayed some clear underneath the base to prevent rust in case it gets wet or sees some humidity. Also, I have had good results using AC instead of DC with ERCuSi-A on thin material. Try it sometime.
