Whats up guys!? Today we are jumping right into the topic of How to TIG WELD Stainless steel tube and I'll be offering lots of tips and tricks regarding stainless tube welds in the Automotive fabrication world.

Tig Welding Stainless Exhausts, Downpipes, Dump tubes, Turbo Kits.. or anything automotive fabrication wise is a true art form when you break it down and try and turn out the BEST part that you can. At the end of the day we are all craftsman just trying to advance ourselves in this industry and learn everything we can to make our lives better and sharpen our skills.

Getting cool looking colors when Tig welding is definitely not for every industry and it has its place so please don't get offended if you are doing Xray aerospace welding work. I have done Aerospace welding work and can truly appreciate the precise process behind it.
Tig / Gtaw welding stainless steel tube is an art form and you can be as lazy or picky about the quality as you want.. If you want quality stainless steel TIG welds you're going to have to put in the prep work and make it happen. Set yourself up with the right tools for the job and you can make anything you want come to life.

You make very valid point about prep. When I have employees prep parts to be welded I usually have to have them clean it up a second time, I tell them that "welding is doing surgery on metal". They often laugh at that but its too true.

Brad, Awesome Video as usual. I have to say this was one of the most in depth Videos on Stainless Tig that I have seen EVER! I mean there is a wealth of information here for the Beginner, and Intermediate Tig Welder, and there are sweet little Tricks in here for even Veterans. I loved that little Propane Torch Trick for getting rid of any leftover Lint or Frbris from your Rag/Paper Towel when wiping down with Acetone. I've never seen that before, and will be implementing that into my Weld Prep Rituals. I've been Fabricating, Welding, Mechanicing, etc for a long time, and I still always learn some new Tip or Trick everytime I watch one of your Videos.

I dont think everyone is cut out for TIG welding. I can Stick, MIG pretty good but my TIG Sucks, specially when I'm trying to build a 304 stainless exhaust system. My welds are embarrassing to look at but get the job done. I think you need to do TIG 40 hrs a week or just be extremely consistent, persistent and have alot of concentration to master stainless tube welding. Kudos in trying to teach us dummies out here.:)

You probably just can't see the puddle. I find that when I do stick and mig that the orange puddle is easy to see with green shades. My eyes can't see shit with tig and green tints. Once I got my optrel crystal 2.0 I could see the puddle. Some other true color hamlets are almost the same. I thought I sucked at first.

I just started working at a place we weld 316 SS with 80% of the welds are pipe and tube. From 2 to 72 inch pipes and tube. I'm fairly new comfort and consistency are definitely the number one thing to work on

100% ipa for prep and nothing but 316l ss for pharma grade . Just my applications to meet pfizer minimum standards, not required everywhere in industry and mine will stand up to many C I P runs with no rouging.Great work your doing and thanks for taking the to help others here.Also only untra high purity argon nd must be almost perfect inside bead. Awesome video! My only question is you said you use the same belt to sharpen tungsten for carbon and ss. I was taught never ever cross contaminate anything from ss to carbon. Because the ss can rust if contaminated with anything from carbon steel. Ive also seen 1st hand proof of this. Cut some ss pipe with a blade used for carbon and it got wet, few days later it had surface rust.

Everything is ground on a 6” wide belt. Left is for Steel, right side is for Stainless steel. A completely dedicated belt for aluminum.. besides, this is automotive fabrication man. I appreciate your precision but cutting SS and mild steel on one blade and leaving deposits is completely different than sharpening tungsten on the same belt. I do pay attention to where I sharpen my tungsten in the belt .. BUT I’ve welded a decent amount of stainless from automotive fabrication, aerospace and sanitary grade tubing and have never had an issue with imbedding or contaminating my part. In my defense, I don’t typically dip tungsten bad. I might just barely touch off on the tip if I’m holding a tight arc but as for absolutely burying my tungsten, I don’t anymore and I can see that being a problem. With that said, I’ve never had any SS rust due to improper technique. Thank you for the very good question! Weld on 🤘🏻

Would TIG welding be used to weld stainless exhaust tip? while on car? If so how do you purge? I'm just trying to understand what to look for as far as finding someone to weld tips onto my stock exhaust (it's stainless too)..I don't really care about looks as long as the welds will do their job holding the exhaust tip on the tail pipe.

usually 1 amp per .001... but .045" filler rod running 45amps with a nice bevel on your joint will work well on your standard .065" stainless exhaust tubing

The company buys gloves for glory tig welding gloves but they release a foul residue from inside the glove. Very irritating and messy to say nothing of what we might be inhaleing. Hey Nelson, thank you! I appreciate it. I personally run of a glove from a company called torch wear. They no longer make Tig welding gloves. I’m waiting on a new company to finish the prototype and send me a pair of gloves to try and I can report back with a video. You can also always get away with some tigsters or millers.
