I hadn’t retired when the EGR valves came in and I actually said in meetings with the Robert Bosch people and they refer to it as the engine is eating itself because it’s adjusting recirculated exhaust and that’s why they recommend putting additives in it to help the valves and the upper piston keep from carbon up Grace and peace

WSM says specifically not to tighten the timing chain guides with a power tool as you can crack a guide, but your a master.

@@maverick12916 oh, but I do. How do you think I knew what WSM said? Didn't say I followed it. He is a professional and has a better than average chance of not breaking it, however those who don't do it for a living should probably tighten it with a ratchet 😏

Ive seen so many 3.5s come in the shop for new timing chains, plus ive worked on many that needed replacing because they chatter like crazy, i had an expedition that i changed the oil on that needed timing chains, that first start up after filling the oil sounding like the engine was going to lock up😂

You’ve been doing a lot of videos on the Ford diesels I’ve been doing some research because I used to be a pump tech for pro diesel. If you go to Europe, they are adding adjectives at the pump or at the time the tanker is being loaded that helps all this submission stuff And your high-pressure fuel pumps survive I mean talk to the Robert Bosch people about the American diesel. American diesel manufacturers are not putting anything in the diesels. The big benefit to the additives are running in your is the EGR valve in the upper piston they help them keep them clean where they don’t build the carbon, they should really get it. Stirred up grace and peace.

Had timing and phasers done twice on my 2013 F150 and it’s still popping a P0018 code and has no power. I’m lost as the shop wants to replace the engine due to thinking the oil journals are damaged. Cold start rattle, no power, no acceleration, etc… It’s acting like it’s in limp mode. I’m clearing that code up to 7 times a day just to drive it somewhat normally.

Shouldn't you replace everything on the front of that 3.5? Phasers,chains,water pump?. And I would be curious on the price of a reman engine, say a Jasper by the the time you add parts and labor. Plus you get a better warranty.

You need to get the workshop manual for your vehicle, either in print, or through an online service like AllData. He's only showing you about 5% of the job. When you have a VVT motor, your work has to be perfect. You can't just put the timing tools on the motor and forget about it. If you remove one of your valve covers and put a wrench on one of the cams and turn it clockwise, the cam will move, but the engine will not. Once you reach the end of the VVT actuator's travel, then the rest of the motor will move. Since you don't always have a direct 100% mechanical connection of all your timing components, a lot can go wrong when you time the motor. As you work through the steps when timing the motor, the manual will have you remove some of the timing tools to tighten some bolts, and install them to tighten other. You keep removing and installing them as part of the process. Also, you probably won't get the timing right on your first try. Plan on doing it several times. Even dealership techs don't always get it on the first try. Just make sure its right before you put everything back together. The workshop manual will list part numbers for any special service tools needed to do the job. The part numbers will be for Rotunda tools, but if you put the Rotunda numbers into amazon, it will automatically cross the part numbers to other tool brands. You buy the whole kit, and it should be much cheaper than Rotunda. If you actually plan to do the repair yourself, you're going to have to remove the fuel pump and some of the lines. Unlike timing, this is a safety issue. Again, you need to follow the workshop to the letter. The last thing you want is to have a fuel leak on a delivery system that has about 1500psi shooting gas all over your hot motor.

The cam holders are different from gen1 to 2. And don't get the cheap ones from Amazon. They will bend under torque.
@ghostwrench2292

Just double up the cheap ones when breaking the phasers loose and then torquing them back.

I would like to ask for some advice on what I should do regarding my 2012 f150 crew 4x4. It has the 3.5 in it with the timing chain clatter and has other issues like several codes which I will have to read all of them once I have my scanner in hand. I have put alot of money into the truck but it has over 200,000 miles on original motor. Should I try and fix the issues it has motor wise or should I drop the money on a new engine from Ford. I've already bought a new trans from Ford and had the Ford dealer install it along with new trans lines. New drive shaft, vaccum pump, both turbos along with new fittings and exhaust manifold, water pump, plugs and 4 four coil packs. It now is throwing a low oil pressure warning light but I think that is the sensor acting up. What advice would you give me as I love the truck and really can't afford another payment as I only have 6 payments left on the truck. Thanks in advance

@AT-wl9yq 7 ай бұрын
You have to figure out what's wrong with it before you can make a decision. You didn't list any drivability issues, so I'm going by the assumption that the motor is running OK. Start with oil pressure first. You probably don't have a gauge to check it, so you'll have to do the next best thing. Your oil pressure should be listed in the data stream, so watch that while the motor is running. If you're supposed to have about 20 psi, and its something close, like 12 or 13, your sensor is probably working. If its way off, and you get readings that don't make sense, I would look at the sensor. However, my best guess is that the sensor is working OK, and I'll explain why. We need the codes. You have timing chain noise. The timing chain(s) are connected to your VVT actuators. Your VVT actuators are driven by oil pressure. You need to verify if the low pressure is engine oil pump related or low pressure on the oil solenoids that drive the VVT actuators. Given the chain noise, your engine oil pump is most likely OK. But it still needs to be verified before you do any work. When you scan for codes, you want to look at the ones that start with a P. Disregard any codes that start with a U, and if you have any B or C codes, make note of them, but they're probably not related to this issue.
