This is the best how to on youtube. I've watched 10 videos on this and not one has talked about the notches to be lined up on the tensioner. I didnt loosen the cam sprocket or even know about the notches in the tensioner. I reckon I'll be taking it back apart and timing it again. Better safe than sorry I guess. Thanks!

Thanks buddy.... I have the AHF engine and it looks exactly the same..... Did my timing belt 2 years ago and its almost time again to do so..... Just came to refresh my memory lol..... I have the OEM Cam sprocket with the locking hole so i dont think i need to remove the vacuum pump then.... My torque wrench was stolen when they broke into my car so i will just mark the bolts and nuts when installing back..... Dont have the tensioner tool either so i use 2 small Allen keys with a screwdriver to tension it up....

Update: Car started on the first crank following this video - verbatim! Here are a couple of pointers to anyone in the same position without the flywheel marks. I noticed that there was another video out there which talked about finding TDC with the harmonic balancer and the small vertical mark (indent) on the lower crank timing belt cover. Line the nick on the backside of the balancer to the dent in the cover, and voila, TDC on #1 cylinder, lobes up etc. Use some liquid paper (pen format) or some chalk to see the marks from above down along the side. The harmonic balancer will only go on one way, it’s hole to accommodate the alignment bump at 7 O’clock and the 3 small punch marks on the crank vertical. Of course, you can also use a wire and measure the top of the piston stroke too, but the alignment nicks are preferable. Once you do get TDC, mark the flywheel! Makes it a whole lot easier. Most important of all is lobes up and cam slot horizontal. Hope his helps someone. Now I only have VCDS to do for advance/retard adjustments. Thanks so much Austin! 2000 Jetta TDI 1.9l ALH manual transmission. 520,000 Km’s and counting! ....John.

I need to do the same I appreciate the pointers! If I understand correctly before pinning the IP and locking the cam with the belt still on I need to instead line up the harmonic balancer mark with the lower timing cover indent first so I can mark the flywheel TDC? How do you then pin the IP in the hole and lock the cam in place, assuming now they will be off?
@M4C317 ай бұрын
@@louiludog is it not too far off? If not then loosen the 3 13mm bolts on the IP, then rotate the pump using a 22mm spanner until the pin hole lines up.

This is by far Austin the best video I have seen on this! I am quite sure, having watched it, that my timing will be fixed tomorrow. I have the misfortune of not having an OEM flywheel and it doesn’t have the timing mark on it, so I am forced to approximate TDC on #1 cylinder based on piston travel and getting to the dwell phase at the top of travel. But the part of your video which identifies my timing mistake is where you specifically state why the CAM pulley must be loosened so that it and injection pump pulley move while the slack is taken up with the tensioner WITHOUT moving the crank! So well said! Again, I am sure this is the mistake I have made and I’ll certainly write back with an update. Thank you so much. Given, I don’t have the flywheel mark, I am going to use compression on #2 cylinder, followed by compression and TDC on #1 cylinder to determine correct crank and flywheel position - re. firing order 1342. Would you have any other suggestion without the TDC mark on the flywheel? Thanks...John

Very good video very informative hard to beat i think the only thing that would make it better is of you threw some torque specs in the description but people can look that up separately

I"ve done a timing belt on an old 1.6L Rabbit diesel back in the day, but I haven't done it on my 2001 Beetle TDI yet....but now at over 300k miles I may just do the next one that's coming up within the next year. It would cost more to pay someone than the car is worth now....but it still runs perfectly and everything works.

I didn't even take any of the reservoirs off. I just took the two screws off the Coolant bottle and the allen bolt for the power steering reservoir. Then you can mostly move them out of the way.

Hey, just FYI unless it’s extremely cold, these little engines hardly need any glow plugs, so if your starting is really bad it’s most likely something else 👍

Awesome video!! Very informative, What’s the labor cost on something like this? I’m afraid to do it myself so considering hiring a professional. Also my water pump went out when I was driving, I immediately turned off engine and towed my vehicle. Is there something internal that it might have damaged? I know they say if the timing belt tears it’s bad for the engine. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
@austinniemela3 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the labor cost! Engine should be fine if it didnt overheat as long as the belt is still good and the crank and cam didnt come out of time!

Hello, I noticed (at minute 22.42), that you have the belt almost coming out of the sprocket of the injection pump, as well as that of the camshaft. What did you do to center the belt? I am in the same situation, I have already rotated the engine several times, and the belt remains off-center on the teeth of the timing belt of the injection pump. I noticed that only the tensioner serves as a guide to the belt, so it is he who is guiding the belt to that side. I bought the original vw kit, so I put part of the tensioner defect (but it is possible) ... So I'm afraid to start the engine in this situation ... Greetings from Portugal
@austinniemela3 жыл бұрын
Most of them are not perfectly centered!
@decathec3 жыл бұрын
If I'm changing just the belt and not doing the kit, is it necessary to remove the cam gear?
@austinniemela3 жыл бұрын
Well typically the belt will last much longer than the bearings in the tensioner and idlers. Best to do the whole deal

That makes sense. Thank you for replying

I recently replaced the timing belt on my 2003 Jetta TDI, after the job was done, it started right up, no problems, but I don't have the cable to hook it up to the laptop to check the timing/injection pump. Can I drive it like this if everything looks normal, or is it a must to verify that? Thanks.
@austinniemela3 жыл бұрын
Diesel it’s probably close if it runs good, but when you dial it in perfect you optimize your power and fuel mileage!
@svendittmann31053 жыл бұрын
start the engine well at warm and cold (under 10°C) weather?! If yes you need no cabel check. If not VCDS lite is the perfect tool to check this. I changed mit TB in may, the car runs perfectly now in the end of summer in Germany the starting becomes harder to harder.... Last I bougt / registred vcds lite and checke the timing. The engine runs - retarded - .... adjust the pump to - forward - and the engine runs perfect now!!!
@mastercode21883 жыл бұрын
You can drive like that it is ok but at some time take a vcds and go on basic setting to see timing. I have an ALH 1.9tdi and had a hard start when cold around 5 celsius because pump was retarded too much. After i advanced it now it start with no problem
@howtofrank5022 жыл бұрын
@@mastercode2188 I disagree, it’s not a big deal. Use a timing light and run it, you use VCDS for fine tuning. I did a timing belt on a civic, pretty straight forward. This being a mechanically timed pump, it’s no stressor
@mastercode21882 жыл бұрын
@@howtofrank502 it is mechanically timed but it is very very sensitive so on pump pulley you have 3 screws and with them you fine tune after you installed new timing belt, and when you see on vcds where is your injection timing you loosen that bolts and just slightli push pump advanced or retarded and im talking about pushing it 1mm or less and you get big changes, it is really sensitive. Pump can correct injection by itself but just a bit and only after engine started so your engine will almost always have rough start until you fine tune inj. pump. Also pump needs to be fine adjusted every time you change timing belt because it is never perfectly until you adjusted it. It is very easy and i did it several times, also if someone totally missed timing on injection pump it is also easy and should be checked first( there is a hole in pulley for pin)
