Is it possible to play high level beach volleyball without jumping, with an injured shoulder, or if you are simply too short to attack the ball in a downward trajectory?
In certain cases, yes absolutely.
This is the followup video to my video about Eric Nygård from Sweden that has a somewhat unusual sand volleyball attacking style. In this video I break down the mechanics of the tomahawk attack (normally tomahawks are mostly used in defense, maybe some serve receive and maybe as a emergency recovery move when bailing out from a handset), so that hopefully even people who cannot or do not want to use a more traditional attacking style can become more competitive and enjoy our sport more!

Woho! Sorry for the wait, I know it's been long..! 😬 Hope this video clarified things, and I think now that this video has laid out my basic thinking around the technique, I believe it will be easier for me to answer further questions about it without getting the urge to write half a book as an answer hahah! :)

This helped tremendously, thanks. I've been doing this a decent amount since the first video. It really helps for out of system or iffy sets, it's easy to feel the defense giving up short, I can abandon ship on my normal hit and then do this short. I was having the same problem as you deep, and I use my hands flat in prayer 🙏 like that. I'll have to switch it to what you showed in video. Also the angling of just one hand to slice or hook it is gold, ty!

Thank you for making this video! I have been waiting for you to make this video. I'm so excited about getting better at doing tomahawk. I'm not the best hitter so becoming good at tomahawk is something I've been wanting to do. Can't wait to see the next video with Eric. Thank you again. You are so detailed with your explanation and I love it.

@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast Yes I have but I didn't do very well. I tried to make it short to the net but always went further out to the net making it easy for others to get it so I gave up on using it. Well after I watched this video, I went outside and did what you taught, and short to the net is looking good. I just have to practice with the long-back tomahawk without making it look obvious. Thank you for making the video!

Awesome! :) According to me, it really actually is fun to attack this way. Not exactly the same type of satisfaction as from a big spike, but still a similar one because it requires a lot of "finesse"! :) Feel free to let me know how it went once you have tried! :)

@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast you wouldn’t believe how many times i have watched the original video to pick up the technic. Im only 5.9 and can only swing the ball when it is a perfect set. So i have been trying to mix that up with tomahawk shots to side out. But now this great and I really appreciate you not forgetting about it. Thanks again

@@badem Hahah damn! I hope this video will help understand it better then..! Did you find any success with the technique before this new video? If there's any questions about it, let me know, much easier for me to answer questions now that my basic frameworks for this technique (angle concept and the "tweaking of several knobs") are laid out, now I can speak further from on top of those explanations if this makes sense! Was so difficult to answer some questions that the old video generated because I would have wanted to write so much in order to answer, after all this new video ended up being over 20 minutes long! 😅

@@LearnBeachVolleyballFast So the nearest thing to this was open hand when they are stacked on top of each other. I used to use this to get balls above my head and I slowly learned how to do ball control with using this form and I used the tomahawk idea from your idea and combined them together. I can usually guide the ball any place I want. The quality of those shots are highly dependent on top spin and how low I can keep them. Good or bad technique aside I was forced to read the court a lot more carefully before shooting my shot and that has helped me a lot. I am going to switch the stacked open hand to tomahawk watching this latest video. I will let you know how it goes. The quick cut shots to the sides when you are in the middle is a very effective and I love to get good at those.

@@badem Awesome, sounds like a good plan! Yeah, stacking the hands on top of other and hitting the ball with the palm was how I learned at first as well. Have never tried to attack that way though, would be fun to hear how this goes for you and if you end up finding it easier with the hands in the "tennis ball grip" or not! :)

The heel of the hand for direction was new for me. If you really want to see why this attack need be precise and deceptive in its executionn, bring it out in 4s. Still very effective, but every touch has to be sharper and you cant telgraph long or short. Going to have to see if I can even hide the direction with the heel movement.
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 2 жыл бұрын
Haha yes, getting a ball to touch the ground without jumping, against 4 defenders on the other side of the court is some real wizardry if you are able to do it.. Do you work a lot with trying to put the ball right inbetween two people then, creating the "husband and wife" situations? The heel of the hand is actually more my idea than Erics, so maybe it is not 100% stamped and approved by Eric, but I find it useful and helpful. I saw in the examples of the "cutshots" left and right (that I recorded later than the actual talking in the video) that in reality I do a combo of sticking out the heel but also turning my hands and the whole arm position in a sense. I am sure though that I am very far from ultimate mastery of this technique (and to be fair most of my practice time goes to other techniques than the tomahawk now that my shoulder is up&running again) and it would be really fun to see if now people can go and improve on the technique even further beyond what I have shared here in this video! This means you guys are always welcome back here with new insights or questions regarding the tomahawk, maybe I'll even forward some of the questions the Eric if I feel it's needed! :)

@Learn Beach Volleyball Fast in 4s, even amongst good doubles players, there's confusion as to who is getting the ball and slowness to get there, but I have the most success playing the four corners, but picking on people that are out of position or who might be a little winded. I usually use it if I dont like the set or I dont feel ready for a big approach, so I'm still attacking with it from the outside
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast

@@cappehnkrunch Makes sense! :) Eric talked (in the recording for the upcoming videos) about analyzing the opponents and picking on the uncoordinated/stiff/slow reaction time players by exposing their weaknesses, for example if they are stiff and bad at taking long balls then using that for your advantage. Sounds a bit like you have had similar thoughts going on! :)

Cant thank you enough. But do i miss some video about tomahawk details, this one and the part 3 one cant find the secrets of bullet-point 6. orientation on court 7.how far off the net 8 wind. did they further discussed? I come into a game situation makes me offten close to net like a foot away or even a net bouncing back. I find it greatly limited my axe choice. only short near corner and far short corner can have high hit rate( rainbow too high,middle net easy netting). did ERIC share some ways to tackle that annoying situation..

Is it a legal attack? Maybe someone consider it as being a double fault. Cn't find any rules about it.:/
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast Жыл бұрын
Absolutely legal! I've never seen anyone complain! If the hands were separated then I think people would complain but as long as they are together and the contact isn't done with fingertips/finger action, no problem and no rule against it exists! I guess similar to someone playing the ball with their forearms with their platform, but the arms are "not so good" so that there is a gap between the two forearms even if hands are connected.. Would never be considered a double unless the person swung at the ball with hands completely disconnected..!

Efficient old man game. How do you defend, except to be very fast?
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast
@LearnBeachVolleyballFast 2 жыл бұрын
Hahah yes. Umm, mostly defending is about being balanced and very fast I'd say. There are some patterns that can get you a freeball every now and then (for example sometimes people defend Eric with one person in the front and another in the back rather than side to side), but if it keeps going then he'll adapt to that and start scoring again haha. I guess he also analyzes his opponents in terms of which direction they have trouble being fast towards, and start exposing that! :)
