Here is the Hungarian version: finely chop an onion and start frying it in a tbsp oil, then add chopped bell peppers and lastly the tomatoes (because tomatoes need less time to cook). When the tomatoes release the juices, just pour in the egg mixture and once it's cooked you're done. We're usually eat some bread with it, but some people add sausages, leave out the egg and have it with rice. It's a very popular dish called lecsó. So interesting to read the comments about different versions of this dish from around the world :)

@D Tomato and egg is super popular combo around the world (and for good reason) Shakshuka and eggs in purgatory are a level up in terms of time commitment and added ingredients as well as steps but they're essentially the same iconic combination of cooked tomatoes and eggs for breakfast! It's kind of dumplings around the world. They're all the same exact concept of filling wrapped in dough yet there are so many different versions with their own twists and identities

Wow so delicious! this recipe so similar with our’s. We call it menemen ( you can pronounce like men-a-men) There is disagreement about its content for many years. some of us cook with onions, some of us cook without onions.i love both versions. Let me talk about the differences. cut the tomatoes smaller, we do not put sugar and starch in it. We also pour the scrambled eggs over the tomatoes when cooked, and quickly mix them before the eggs solidify and take away from the fire. so it becomes slightly juicy, tasty. We usually eat with fresh bread/ toasted bread and black tea. Do you guys like black tea? Please try it once, I think you will not regret 😋

This is one of my all time favourite recipes these days. I can’t believe as much as I grew up eating fresh tomatoes, and tomato gravy with my eggs that this didn’t ever occur to me as a combo. Now, I definitely think how I choose to season this dish/add ins depend on the season because the tomato can vary anywhere from wintertime only access to hard and red in Color but not truly ripened by the ☀️ to during summertime when I can get plenty of sun ripened home grown juicy sweet tomatoes! So wintertime I find myself needing to add sugar and some garlic and onions to flavour versus summertime I can almost just use eggs and tomato’s but it’s also nice to splash in vinegar to balance too sweet with a bit of acid and my biggest most favourite discovery tip is: Fish broth! Be it korean anchovy liquid OR 5 crab fish sauce OR some powdered dashi. Adding this in to a bit of water just elevates this dish to another level.(use instead of salt) Nommy 😋

My family always did it very simple, stir fry the tomatoes, when the skin starts peeling and the tomatoes soften, pour in the eggs right on top. Stir real quick and don’t let the eggs overcook. We don’t use ketchup, just some salt, sugar, and white pepper. The peanut oil really helps for flavor.

My Family's background is former Prussian empire. I have made something like this, since I was small. It's a summer dish for me, because I use fresh tomatoes from our garden. I like using cherry tomatoes because cooking them releases their sweetness- no sugar required. I also add some crushed garlic. I put fresh ( homegrown) chives on top. Then I put it on top of toast- although I do sometimes eat it with fried rice.
