Tried out this recipe (though I replaced the mushroom with green bell pepper and sausage with minced pork, because that’s what my fridge had at the time) and I gotta tell you, it tastes wickedly good! Highly recommend trying it out to those of you who have an hour to spare.

Xiaoying’s Non-Fried Rice Serves 2-3 adults 1 cup rice (I used short grain) 2 smallish Yukon gold or white potatoes 1-2 carrots, size dependent Another veggie or two - Onion or Mushroom or Broccoli or Peppers, etc, cut into small pieces. ~ 4oz Protein - Chinese sausage, bacon, ham, etc, cut into small pieces Salt and Pepper Large spoonful - Light and Regular soy sauce Large spoonful - Oyster sauce 2 cloves of garlic, sliced Sesame/Black Sesame seeds, for garnish ~1/4 cup Vegetable Oil 2 eggs (optional) 1 cup of water Notes: For the size of my appliance, I wasn’t able to make a neat rice layer on top. It sunk and mixed in with the water mixture but still ended up great. I also didn’t use eggs. I used bacon and broccoli, which turned out nice. I ended up adding more salt at the end. Hope you enjoy! 1. Rinse rice, then soak for 30 minutes. (After 30 minutes of rice soak, drain the rice and set aside.) 2. While rice is soaking, chop veggies, potatoes, protein into small uniform pieces. 3. With oil in a pan, sauté protein on medium high heat until slightly browned. 4. Add the vegetables, Stir to coat all ingredients. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Add spices, soy sauces, and oyster sauce. Stir to coat evenly. 6. Add 1 cup of water to the pan and bring to boil. As soon as the water is boiling, turn off the heat. 7. Transfer mixture to your rice cooker or instant pot. Add garlic slices. 8. Add your rice to the appliance. Try to form a layer of rice on top of the meat mixture. 9. Optional - form small divots in the rice layer for the eggs. Crack eggs on top of the rice, in the divots you formed. 10. Using your appropriate appliance, cook ~ 10-14 min. (I used the “rice” button on my instant pot. I assume there is a “cook” button on a rice maker) 11. Serve, garnish with sesame seeds. Edit as you like! Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for putting the recipe into text. That will help me to cook it more easily! I will probably make some changes myself. I am very sensitive to mushrooms and seafood of any kind, so I wouldn't be able to tolerate them or the oyster sauce. The rest sounds delicious! Now I just need to find what I did with my rice cooker. 😂

For those looking for a review from someone who’ve tried this recipe: - the flavour was pretty good - the rice wasn’t thoroughly cooked since the amount of water instructed was insufficent - some parts remained uncooked and some slightly overcooked My Chinese friend suggested: 1) stir-fry the veggies without adding water 2) put rice into the rice cooker first and then add the corresponding amount of water for the rice 3) put the veggies on top and turn on the rice cooker

Isn't this basically just a fancy fried rice? The rice cooker boiled all the excess water and what's left is very hot oil. You can even see some of the egg white getting a bit crispy, something that usually happens when frying eggs above a certain temperature and time. I guess this is the way to cook fried rice with freshly cooked rice.
