So Finally I discovered how to tone my horrible brassy hair and wanted to share that with you all! I am not a professional yet this worked well with me so I decided to spread the word.
So basically using blue-black hair dye with shampoo tones the hair but be careful not to darken the hair by washing it quickly when you see the level of ashiness you like.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS: - the recipe in details: Get a blue black box hair dye, use a table spoon of the dye mix (paste and liquid) add to it 3 table spoons of shampoo (white or transparent regular shampoo) mix then add a tea spoon of water. Keep mixing and apply it to dry hair in a good light source to see it until it reaches a shade you like then wash it right away. Note that sulphate free shampoos and such don’t work. - wet or dry hair? I tried it on both but wet hair tends to look darker so it’s hard to know when to wash it off. Also anything you do to wet hair is more damaging as the hair follicle is open so you can’t comb the color through to get even results.

Thank you so much for the awesome video, Im very excited to try it out. I just had one question, I got my hair highlighted blonde awhile back and that has maintained a nice blonde color that I like, I simply need to "tone" the orange/gold part that hasn't been highlighted. Will the blue-black dye effect the highlights in a negative way? Edit: Ive been looking through the rest of your videos and they are all great, I just subscribed! thanks again

Oh my GOD - spent a fortune yesterday getting lightening foils to blend my grey hair after a bad, red brown dye job. Came home with ORANGE hair. Got told by a hairdresser that I was basically stuffed and the only thing was to go back and get very costly toning treatment. Tried this as I cannot cope with light orange hair with my skin tone. It was AMAZING. Have now made myself a wee kit to keep on top of the brassy colour. It will also keep my incoming greys looking a nice steel grey and not yellow and not ruin my natural dark brown hair. You have saved me a fortune and made my going grey process so much easier. This comment might help someone. I had bleached highlights throughout my whole head, ranging from orange, yellow, and then banana yellow right around my face. I used this method kinda, but with a twist. I wanted to tone all 3 colors in my hair without messing this up, so here’s what I came up with. First, I mixed together my blue-black box dye (the color+the developer) (I used Revlon natural blue-black dye) , then I literally squirted out a tablespoon of it into a mixing bowl. To that, I added 1 1/2 cups of conditioner and a tablespoon of water. *optional* I added the tiniest dab of manic panic Violet to the mixture to help with my really blonde parts. (I decided to dilute the hell out of the blue box dye w/conditioner because I was taking noo chances lol. Plus, I had a whole head to tone, not just the ends of my hair...) I applied to dry hair with my hands very quickly starting with the darkest parts first, then did the banana yellow parts last. I kept an eye on it and ended up washing it out after 4 min. It really worked and I was def surprised. It gave my banana yellow a perfect ash blonde with the slightest undertone of grey. It cooled down the brassiness of the yellow and orange too. No complaints!

I have blonde& platinum highlights over dirty blonde natural hair. I tried this and it WORKS!! one thing she doesn’t mention is that you need to leave the color to develop fully before applying. I sectioned my hair, started my timer after my hair was fully covered and saturated. 1min 30 seconds before I rinsed. Amazing results!! Helped blend my roots too! Left my hair so soft and healthy feeling. Used L’Oréal dream lengths shampoo. I used 1 teaspoon of each in about 1/2 cup of shampoo.

When you purchase a box of hair dye it usually gives you two liquids inside to mix in order for you to make the color on the box. She did not want to mix both liquids in one bottle because she will make too much color than needed. So, instead she mixed the portion she needed on a bowl and added shampoo.

Everybody, this works!! Remember to double or triple the amount of the dyes whether you're toning orange or red tones respectively. The first time, it only half worked for me with some spots which stayed orange... That was because I didn't use enough dye!

My hair is thick and long. Started with the mix and the brush from my root's. It was taking forever. So I just slapped in on my ends and worked my way up. Next time I wash my hair I'll need to start in the mid section, go over all the last of the orangey brassy sections. Also, might be a good idea to have an extra person to check my back of hair sections. All in all I'm impressed with the outcome. And my mum has the same (fighting the copper problem). I'll be doing hers from now on too. 😊

I've tried this with Garnier's blue black hair dye on my level 6-8 asian bleached hair 3 times now and it looks soo good!. I left it in a bit longer than usual the last time and it came out almost grey in the lighter areas and ashy brown elsewhere and just soo nice. My only gripe is it doesn't last super long on the more orange areas but its easy to do and I dont wash my hair very often (2-3x/week) so it helps prolong the toning. Highly recommend everyone try it out!!

This absolutely WORKS, do it exactly as she indicates. If you go a little bit more on the amount of hair dye yes it turns blue specially the more bleached highlights. With The amount she indicates is safe and effective. I overdid it with the amount, turned a bit blue but now it’s perfect after a few washes, orangy is gone.

I used about 1/4 teaspoon of the developer and colour cream and mixed with about same amount of shampoo you used, but instead used conditioner. I did my roots first as they were the worst and warm brown. The ends were blonde. So on roots I left it about 5-10 min (I did a few tests to see how long) and the ends that were blonde I only lathered through and then rinsed. After washing my hair a couple times it's PERFECT ash toned.

I mixed a Ash Brown cool tea 1 tablespoon color and one tablespoon of the developer to the shampoo and kept it on my dry hair for 10 minutes! It worked! I would refine the recipe to adding it to a sulfate free conditioner instead of a shampoo (I used OGX Argon Oil of Morocco Conditioner.) This is very good to refresher your color as well and so much less damaging. Thank you so much! Never buying toner again!!!

Blonde here. Took the plunge and tried it. IT WORKS!! How well it works depends on how much bleached hair you have and how long you leave it on your bleached bits. It DOES darken bleached blonde, so you gotta rinse out after 2-3 minutes! I bought a $2.50 box of Revlon Blue Black dye, I mix up a spoonful of dye, then mix that with my shampoo. My hair is waist-length, I cake quite a lot of it on my roots, and lather downward. My hair was bleached but it's halfway grown out. So I don't lather it much on my bleached ends. My hair was a brassy mess from dying it light blonde for years. I'd been toning with violet Punky hair dye without ever getting the ashy hair color I wanted. The black hair dye gets that result! Currently I'm toning with a scoop of Blue/Black, scoop of violet Punky, and a drop of ION Blue Ash intensifier. This mix creates perfect dark Ash Blonde/ light Ash Brown, costs pennies, and is super gentle on my long thin hair. Cheap Easy Secret was Right. You Rock Angie!!

Love this amazing tip! Thanks Angie! I tried this after using purple shampoo, blue shampoo and ash blonde timers to no effect. I used your recipe but it didn’t take as much as I would have liked so after towel drying it off, I took a deep breath and just mixed up a small amount of colour (as though I was going to dye my hair black) and put it on the brassy (light orangey) top section of my hair. I left it on about 2 mins then washed it off. It worked a treat - turning the top half an ashy darker shade - almost like balayage - and it looks so so much better (like a natural slightly darker roots area). Very pleased. I would totally recommend this method - don’t be afraid to try it. The very little time it is on won’t turn your hair black or anything! Just keep checking every 30 seconds or so to see how it’s going. It 100% removes all orangey tones. Trust the very glamorous salons in the Middle East to do this “rinsage” method! Thank you Angie for putting this out there.

I did try this tonight and it does get rid of the brassiness. You just have to be careful not to put too much of the dye when mixing with the shampoo. If you do that you will see green blueish tone. This works better then blue shampoo. Also I tried it on a strip before doing it all over. Once when you put it on wash it out immediately cause it turns the brassiness down fast.

This “trick” saved my sanity! Natural hair color is medium ash brown with gray/white mixed in. Stopped dying my hair the warm chocolate/caramel color 8 months ago to grow out my natural color. The bottom five inches of my hair were bright/brassy orange and I was wearing my hair in buns & ponies for months since my hair looked gross. since I have very thick, medium length hair, I quadrupled the recipe of toner and dye and added two small travel size bottles of shampoo. I managed to have enough to cover my entire head and I left it on about 10 to 12 minutes after finishing the top layer. I was extremely nervous and didn’t want to overdo it, but I am happy with the results. The brassiness is gone and the line of demarcation between my natural and the orange is practically invisible. My gray/white hairs are a tint of gray/blue, but look fine. The next time I do this, I will definitely leave it on for about 15 minutes or so, especially on the top layer ends as they are not as processed as the underneath. Thank you for this tutorial!!!!

I just tried it and it works. The only thing I disagree with is when to wash it out. With yellow hair, you may want to wash it out after 1 min, but for orange/red hair i would make it last 3-4 mins. I did exactly what she asked but I had to do it a second time in a row, and added a lot more dye in my shampoo mix and left it on for 3-4 mins instead and THEN it finally did something. Fair warning: it does darken your hair by at least 1 shade. But the results are amazing and I’m so much happier. Thank you!

Omg so I tried it. Why on earth did I not know this before. I was struggling with blue shampoo. It dripped and caused blue greasy buildup on my scalp. So I bought Syoss midnight blue and made the shampoo, applied to dry hair for two minutes and rinsed. Tip, add a lot of shampoo to the mixture because dry hair is harder to lather in. Mix it well and let it develop into a very dark blue. When I dried my hair I couldn't believe it. My hair is so so ashy. A tiny bit darker too but I love that because that looks fresh and it's summer, my hair was getting too glassy. I love love love this, it saves me so much money on Fanola orders. I even consider throwing out the Fanola. It makes my hair too dry and the effect is not great. Thank you thank you thank you a million times!

I tried this "rinsage" recipe. It worked ever so slightly. I used 1/8 tsp of blue black creme (Sally's Ion), 1/8 tsp 20 developer ( Sally's Ion), and 1 tbl of the Argan shampoo in my plastic bowl w/plastic spoon (never use metal). It mixed up into a nice blueish gray color. I only left it on for seconds so perhaps I did not leave it on long enough before rinsing. I am due to color my hair again in one week so I am going to add 1/8 tsp of the blue black creme (Sally's Ion) to my medium ash brown liquid dye (Sally's Ion) with the 20 developer and leave it on for 60 min. This is what the colorist was doing at the Salon that I used to go to and I was paying $70 every 4 wks so I want to do this myself and save money. My old colorist said she was adding 4 drops of black to her mixture no mention of black w/blue. I am sure she was not telling me her full on secret in order to keep me coming back. I am tired of throwing money down the drain..literally and I hate sitting in the Salon that long where everyone can see me with dye on my hair. If anything this "rinsage" gave me the confidence to experiment with the blue black in my coloring. I have got to say tho... I am now in love with the Hask Argan Oil Shampoo (and conditioner) that Angie is using in the video. I found it on the shelf at my local Target and it was not expensive at all. It is sulfate free and it made my hair super soft. Sulfates are what fades your color every time you shampoo. Angie, you rock! I Love your personality... you are so cute in your videos and I am now a subscriber.

You probably did not mix up enough dye/developer/shampoo unless you have very short hair. I think she had a 1 tablespoon of dye with 1 tablespoon of developer, and 3 tablespoons of shampoo (someone else said 1/2 cup shampoo.) For 1 1/2 - 3 minutes (for most people) checking it until you reach the desired color; which might be more or less time for your hair.

I've done it 15 years ago in high school. :)) You mix black dye with shampoo and stay with it 5 minutes. It can go green if you keep it longer or if the brand of the dye doesn't contain much blue. :) But then it fades so it's not forever.

This worked great! I have long dark brown hair that has been highlighted, bleached, dyed red, and toned a ton of times over the last few years. Now I am growing my grey hair out and as it grows in you can see the cool dark brown of my natural color. The brassy orange of my formally dyed hair was driving me nuts. So I followed this video, purchased a "Black Indigo" dye and a sulfate free shampoo (the brand she shows in the video) just at the drugstore. I used about three(mainly because my hair was dark orange red and long) dollops/swipes like she shows of the color and then three dollops of the developer, mixed in about 2/3 cup of shampoo. I started on my ends because they bothered me the most, then worked my way up. This way was great because I didn't have to cover my natural color at the top. I had my phone stopwatch going and made sure to wash it out before it hit the 2 minute mark (1:44). I rinsed out with cool water and then applied the conditioner that came with the dye. I let that sit for 2-3 minutes and then rinsed and air dried. It's perfect. I was prepared for a big oops that would lead to black hair, but no. It's a lovely dark ash/mushroom brown that resembles my natural cool tone brown hair. I will maintain it with blue conditioner and saved the rest of the box for the next touch up. Thank you so much!!!!

Was it orange/brassy because of bleach

Oh my god it works 🙌 I bleached my natural brown hair and it came out of course orange. I toned them two times with normal toners and nothing happened except waste of money. I was about to book an appointment to my salon or try bleach them again in order to have a more lifted level but thankfully I tried this. It is not perfect but I am not ashamed to go out 😛 I used a bit of the dye with the developer it comes with it but also added some with 6vol I had, some conditioner and some of purple shampoo and I left it about two minutes. Thanks 😊

So I have brown hair that I add highlights to and went a little crazy with the bleach this last time. So most of my head is bleach blonde. I have tried everything to tone it. Blue and purple shampoo, wella toners t14 and t18, demi permanent colors and permanent. While some of those gave me descent results, most were patchy, gave me hot root, or didn't last long. Well today I decided I wanted to go a bit darker underneath my blonde so I bought a dark brown almost black dye. As I started to dye it I got scared and washed it out after about only 2 minutes. My hair was still blonde BUT PERFECTLY TONED! Lol I was in shock how much I loved it. So that's how I found your video. I wanted to see if anyone tones their hair this way. It worked so well I plan on doing my whole head next time I need to wash my hair. Thanks for confirming my "mistake" :) which is now going to be my new way of toning my hair.

@@kathleenfairbairn7144 I just used color silk boxed dye in number 30 dark brown. It was before I saw this video so I will also try this black/blue dye but haven't yet. It was just dye I had in case I messed up because that's closest to my natural color. It toned my hair very well though.

Hello Barbara silver sister, you are the only person commenting about natural silver hair! I am transitionning to my natural silver hair (already 1.5yr in) but the dark brown dye that I am growing out is to warm/brassy and clashes with my cool tone silver. I'de love to know if you shampooed your whole hair at once or just concentrated first on ends where it needed toning. In 2 minutes of shampoing your grey, did it darken your natural silver or just made it brighter ? Thank you in advance ! 😊

I dont know if this will work for everyone but it worked for me. I did use conditioner instead of shampoo. Thank you soooooo much. I hate brassy and after my last root touch up my hair not only did not match it was brassy. This worked and I feel so much better. TIP for anyone scared I tried a small section first to see if I would like the results before applying to all my hair.

Oh man... I watched this vid a few days ago and then went ahead and ordered blue black hair dye. A few more days later and I decide to dive in and give it a try! Only - I forgot the one big point. To mix it with shampoo! Boy was that a mistake... Imagine trying to get this blue black hair dye all over your below-the-butt length hair in record time and evenly. Let’s just say - I ended up with big blackish, bluish patches of hair. It was ridiculous, hilarious and disastrous all at once. You know, you laugh then you want to cry and then feign indifference - then laugh and cry some more. Don’t worry tho, in my manic panic I KZbind stripping hair colour and found some stuff concerning dawn dish soap and other random household items... actually faded the colour really well and now my hair is almost back to normal, only I can now see the nice toned down look the blue black hair dye left...if I ever get courage to try this again I will definitely not be a goldfish and forget to thoroughly dilute it with shampoo!

Purple shampoo dies nothing for the brassy, orangey highlights on my brunette hair. It makes sense to use blue black. Blue to cancel the orange. I wonder if just blue dye would work. I may just try it!

This works. Did it just now and it took care of most of the orange. It would have taken it off completely but I didn’t dare leave it on longer than 1 minute because A) My base color is darkest ash blonde; B) I was working on highlights that a salon messed up last week, leaving me with brassy orange and yellow streaks; I have super thin hair; C) I was afraid to turn the brassy yellow into green. So, I was left with a nice ashy overall tone, no brassiness, the yellow is bright and there’s a smidgen of orange on some of the ends in the back. But I can totally live with this. I’ll repeat it in a couple of weeks just in the back and then shampoo it all over just before rinsing. The

i've been using this method for a while now and it's great. i would add one idea which helped KEEP the dye working for longer betweeen shampoos. add some developer to the shampoo/blue-black. it will help enrich the process. not too much, just 2 tbls. and yes, you must do this almost every shampoo in order to maintain...not hard for me because i shampoo once a week! (very healthy hair)

Just received my new wig unit which was supposed to be dark blonde with light highlights (I have alopecia but my bio hair is black). When I opened the box I nearly cried - it was pumpkin orange with the light yellow highlights. I knew I couldn't wear it with my skin tone so I researched my butt off for an answer. I was just about to purchase the blue Manic Panic and add a few dollops of it to conditioner and use that technique since so many have had good results - then I saw your video. I just so happened to have a good quality blue black dye in my cabinet so I did your hack. I think it is going to dry perfectly except for my roots - I was really scared of accidentally darkening the lace so I went too gentle on the roots and I think they're gonna still be orange - but I plan on a second application only on those areas once this dries. The hair isn't light as before, it's not a "dark blonde" or whatever they called it - it's more of a medium brown with gorgeous looking silvery blonde streaks where the yellow highlights were. I can't wait until this dries so I can see it but I can already tell it's done a tremendous job. Definitely gonna love cutting, styling and wearing her. My next wig will be for winter so I plan on getting a light blonde unit and try this technique to get a more "icy" ash brown for the season, then in Spring gonna get another light blonde and go for a coolish light pink color so I can match the cherry blossom trees! You are a life changer! Thank you!!!

You guys, this WORKS!! I’ve had orange hair since trying quarantine highlights fail(!) and did her toner trick- since there is barely any in the uk that i can find and it worked a charm! All i did a bit differently was keep the product in a bit longer since my hair was darker orange and now busted highlights are a nice ashy brown!!!! LOVE!!!!

Ree Alhosani hi, so my hair was orange, very less red tones so i can only say from my experience. I followed her recipe exactly so dye (with developer and colour cream), shampoo and water in the ratio 1:3:1 if that makes sense? I had to leave it in for about 5 ish mins because it was orange and not yellow hair, and you might have to leave it for longer. You can always reapply if you don’t like it first time. It toned my hair, so got rid of most of the orange, so overall maybe a little darker? Hope this helps :)

I think it works! My hair is dark blond, natural, with babylights and highlights on it. I have to use purple-blue mask ot shampoo almost every time I wash my hair so that the blonds stay pretty blond and no orange or onion-yellow. Next time I will leave the product for a few minutes - I bought exactly the same hair color and washed everything away in one minute. Now I know what to expect if it stays longer. Thank you very much for the brilliant life-hack. 🙂
