The better way to use this is to connect the red on the transmitter to one end of the wire and connect the black to ground - not the other end of the wire. If outside you can just use a metal stake or metal pole. This will create a much more distinct sound dropoff where the wire is broken or cut.

If you really want to generate a tone to find a buried cable or inside a wall connect one side of the tone generator to the wire and another side to a grounded source, this will amplify the tone. You can use the ground port on an electrical outlet if your indoors or a ground rod outside or a very long screw drive (that's what we did at ATT). This will generate a very powerful tone and cause the tone to "bleed" into other near by cables. But the cable you are toning will be significantly louder. Trust me you will know if your on the right cable.

I have an automower also and was looking for an easy way to find a break in the wire if it ever happens. I am going to pick my up that tool just in case I find myself in the same situation. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

I bought the same one of these. I'm going to try to tone out wires on an old car I'm fixing for the horn. I was able to find out that these things are simply amplifiers. I took mine apart and was able to get it to play music and it's loud. Audio ground on the battery and the other side goes on one of the legs of the volume control. One issue is the amp chip gets warm, not sure if it gets warm when toning.

Connect one side to a ground and the other side to the broken wire. This will amplify the tone. Where do you find a ground? Possibly if your outside with a ground rod or a long screw driver driven into the ground or the the ground on an electrical outlet ( you should cut the circuit breaker). Just a heads up the the tone will "bleed" making a tone on other near by cables. But the wire that you are toning will be significantly louder. And yes this will go thru walls.

if you use this on a 12 volt system like a car does the key need to be on or does the car need to be running

the tone generator is sending the signal through the wires. so you don't need to turn anything On unless if you need to close a switch for continuity

The wire is not underground, too easy even without this tool. Otherwise you have to make the wire visible or use a NF 286 underground tracker

Hello do you know how to trace and pin point where the short is in a wire with test light or multimeter?I found how to find the circuit but cant find info on how to actual trace the short down other then buying this tool

It depends where the wire is shorted. But with Multimeter you just move with the 2 terminals all over the wire keeping one terminal touching the wire and the other looking for the short. I hope I understood what you are looking for
