can't wait for the video about dogs with high prey drive!

This works. Holding a chicken and telling the dog that it's MINE got through. I have a new Border Collie puppy, and he was absolutely not getting the idea that chickens do not belong in his mouth. He couldn't get the larger chickens, he's only 4 months old, but as soon as a hen left her young-ish chicks to start laying again, the game was on. In past years, all of my other dogs learned quickly to leave chickens alone simply because they knew I was mad at them, and they wanted to please me (Two labs, two Borders, and a couple mixed breed Lab crosses). This little guy was simply incorrigible until I got the idea into his head that the chickens were MINE. Other training is going even better now, he has a new level of respect. Thanks for the great video!

I’ve been training various breeds of dogs around chickens for 30 years or also and I have much better success not allowing them to step toward a chicken. I want them to step away and here’s why: when I am not there and a ruckus occurs in the yard or the coop most dogs (no matter how calm) will react to the commotion and go toward it. Wanting only to break it up or make it stop. Because the calm chciken workd of the dog has been violated. This could be triggered by anything such as a rooster breeding a hen and the hen screams about it. It can also be when two hens get in a fight, or when the weather changes abruptly to a cool windy day and all of the chickens are flying through the air like crazy, ruffling their feathers and flapping. This can trigger even the most calm dog to react and go toward the scene. As the commotion mounts the dog is overcome with the instinct to do something about it. Perhaps the dog even thinks he is doing his master a factor by grabbing the Rousch hen to make her be calm. But in the ruckus accidentally kills the bird. Just my two cents worth but you may want to consider taking it a step further and teach the dog not to walk toward the birds or pay any attention to their behavior. Works for me:)

With my German Shep I raised chicks in the house. He was two years old when I introduced and he has good prey drive. They were my babies - so became his babies. He is great with them and even collects the smaller quail when they make a fly for freedom - 100% unharmed never once even the tiniest puncture mark. He has become a little protective tho - when the local cats come to visit. But great with my cat luckily :)

I had a great time learning my dog the chicken was just a friend. Every weekend we would do some cleaning, add some fresh straw, bring fresh food etc. I would talk to our tiny chicken, talk to the dog and she understood rather fast that the chicken was just another 'kid' in the family. The dog would just sit there and try to engage with the chicken. It was only through this experience that I learned that I could communicate with my dog in another, more natural way. Iso of panicking when we were reaching a crossroad I will now just tell here to come a bit closer and she will look at me for confirmation about which way we are actually going.

I've got a friend with a pet duck and a lizard. The way we get dogs to not try to kill them is we present them to the dogs from a nurturing, caring position. Like you would a baby. We allow them to sniff and look. One dog was a bit confused and opened her mouth to eat the lizard. I took the lizard away, tapped her with a finger on the nose and told her no. Then let her look and sniff again. She was fine after that. It's not that hard, but you have to take the time and effort to do it right. And of course don't let them alone with the animals unless you're absolutely sure they don't eat them.

Yes. Very much so, and sexist and ageist. I think it is partially due to socialization (lack of with other breeds of dogs) in my specific area we have a lot of labs and they all migrate together but very few shepherds who love all breeds of dogs because they were not just around shepherds. Just what is see typically, not an exact science on my part 😂

@denis Gabone dogs pick up on your energy. If you stress out or get angry etc around people of other skin types or ethnicities, the dog will pick up on that and its guarding instinct may kick in. So it has to do with you more than the dog
@Flippokid3 жыл бұрын
@@CyclingthePeaks Yes, they pick up on energy. Yours and the other person's. But what _can_ happen if you don't socialize them properly or if they have a couple bad experiences with some people, is that they start associating physical features with bad people. My roommates dog hates people in hoodies, because of the energy a lot of them have. Not a bad trait in some neighborhoods if you ask me.
@dodopson32113 жыл бұрын
I think so yes. Many years ago my parents had a medium sized mixed breed and she was walking off leash when she encountered her very first black person. My mum barely managed to grab her tail in time because she very much did lunge at that person. Now whether it was just that individual or because of the color I cant be 100% sure but she didn't lunge at white strangers.
