I love how you've trained and trimmed the row of Leyland cypress! In my experience if they are not given a trimming two or three times during the growing season; they can become a problem years down the road. I love the slender, thin, and tall look of them; very elegant!! great job!!

Thanks, yes its very important to train and prune young conifer hedges, as like you say they can cause issues in the future if left untamed. Cheers

@@RJLgardens I also like it when there is a good space between them; it gives it a very airy and elegant look, and also plenty of airflow for them to thrive and keep healthy!.

Should you let them grow to the intended height (or just below) before the first cut on the top or trim the top as well as the sides, back and front while trying to grow the hedge taller?
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens Ай бұрын
It depends on how far away the top is from the finish height, if its miles away, leave the top till its abit closer.

Hi, great video. We have 16foot leylandii trees planted around 2metres apart (they were around 12ft when we planted) We planted over a year ago and haven’t cut yet. Our aim is for them to grow to around 20ft. They are still quite thin on the sides but with some longer branches. Would it be best to just trim the sides for now and take the tops off when closer to the desired height?thanks
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 10 ай бұрын
Depends if height or thickness is the priority, but Yeh keep trimming the faces and the tops will grow up in no time 👍

Hi i have a question, I plan to leave only a naked tree stem the first 2 meters and then at 2-5m height they should meet each other. Would you advice to wait till they are ca. 2,5m tall and then cut them at 2m? I heard they get more branches after being cut from above, so that they will be wider, or you think it is not necessary? Mine are 1,3m apart. being ca 1,5m tall.
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 2 ай бұрын
Hard to say without seeing the actual trees. What i would probably do though if they are 1.5m tall now, is to strip off around 0.5m of all the lower limbs, so the trees put more growth energy into the top section. Then gradually take it up slowly as the trees get bigger over the years and near to your intended height, if that makes sense. Follow my advice at your own risk. 🤣

Not sure on the actual age but they were 10-12ft thin sticks 😅 when they went in. They have had maybe a couple of very little trims just tip pruning, prior to this vid. Good luck with your hedge 👍

What height to plan to maintain these at? My understanding is that leyland cypress get pretty big if left unpruned. Will topping and pruning these regularly result in really thick trunks and branches over the long run?
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 6 ай бұрын
Only slightly higher than it is, these will get light pruning a few times a year to thicken them up so they wont get too woody for quite a number of years.
@kentstjohn
@kentstjohn 6 ай бұрын
I’m curious why cut between the plants. I have a similar hedge establishing, but was planning on leaving the inside branches to overlap. Is it a health risk otherwise? Or just about thickness?
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 6 ай бұрын
When you let them grow into each other the long branches will rob energy from other smaller bits of growth, also less light for them. A bit of overlap is fine though, the aim when they are young is to prune any dominant branches to allow the rest to grow and thicken up. You will have a healthier fuller hedge in the long run.

How would you go about restoring a hedge I guess you could say? The cedar hedge I am dealing with, the previous owners had the trees toped, making about a 5 to 6 inch diameter cut, then it seems it was neglected for a few years after that. The lateral branches started growing upwards and took on the terminal role and grew 3 to 4 inch diameter stems from the point of toping. The hole trees themselves are pretty thin, and from what I understand, unlike deciduous trees, conifers don't send out water sprouts to recover foliage.
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 7 ай бұрын
Depends if you want trees or more of a hedge. Keeping it topped will thicken up the lower foliage that is currently present. Hard to advise anything though. Best to speak to a pro in your area about a poa.

Great video showing how to train a new hedge. I've been looking for a video like this for a while since planting my hedge 2 years ago. We planted thuja at 1m high and they are now around 1.5m high. I want the finished mature height to be around 2.2m so plan to snip off the top at about 1.9m, would that be roughly correct? Given it's 1.5m now and hoping at it's going into it's 3rd year that it will leap this year, by cutting the sides in a narrower cylinder shape like you have shown, will that also encourage it to grow taller also? Many thanks!
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 10 ай бұрын
Yes if you want more height just keep trimming the sides, front/back face. You shouldn't need to do the internal sides of each thuja if you know what i mean as its not a vigorous grower. 👍

@@RJLgardens thanks for your reply. Great tip to just trim the front and back face. I was planning to trim in a circular motion for each plant which would have taken a while as we have planted in 2 rows of a zigzag. Really hoping by end of this summer we get some more privacy! Thanks for the great videos

I think they're planted to close together, even for a hedge. One to two more feet (at least) in between would definitely have been more ideal.

The aim was a dense tall privacy hedge as soon as possibly, haven't got 10 years to wait for it to fill it, hence why the slightly smaller gap in between.
