I also used to hit against a wall, maybe quite a unique one. It was inside my grandpas barn on his farm which had an inbuilt trough along the wall which happened to be roughly the height of a tennis net. Would spend hours practicing strokes and imitating Sampras, Goran and Becker’s serves 💕

This video transformed my tennis. I hit about 15 minutes a day, every day, wherever I am; parking garages, behind shopping centers, abandoned warehouses, wherever. The wall punishes power and rewards grace smoothness and consistency. Something I’ve always had trouble with. I put two pieces of tape for the net. One at 36” (for the cross court shots) and one at 42” for down the line.

I really enjoyed the video and for the first time I feel, indeed Wall is going to be great Tennis partner. What I don't understand is the last drill on Overhead smashes hitting the ball under the line on the ground first. Practicing such likely to make players lose points in matches. So, what's the rationale behind the last drill? Kindly clarify.
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBtrivedi, overheads are hit with close proximity to the net. Therefore the wall overhead drill accurately mimics the trajectory of the overhead.

Yes I am a big fan of the wall too. All those benefits he mentions are real and you can really improve doing these drills. Caveat though: the wall does not hit with a lot of pace or spin like your better opponents do, and it's hard to practice high balls (I suppose you could do it but hard to keep the ball in court). Also you cannot practice hitting for position on the court, or hitting on the court at all for that matter. You'll get really good at mid pace balls below the waist, but really in a match you don't get a lot of those. You really can improve volleys, overheads, stamina and reaction time and basic stroke mechanics. And the wall is there for you whenever you are ready.

Honestly, I can say the wall has the biggest part of my tennis improvement.This is where i spent more time of my tennis practice.In fact all of my stokes was develop on the wall. There is a big wall of a ware house about 4km from my house. For 3 years from 2011, I ride my bicycle 3 to 4 times a week to reach the location of that wall and i spent 2 hours every session.You name it, topspin groundstokes, slice groundstrokes, volley, Serve, forehand overheads, backhand overheads, drive volleys, lobs, tweener.The wall does'nt get tired, doesnt complain, and it is absolutely free. If not every pro, i think 99% of the atp pro hit against the wall a lot of times especially on their younger years, thats for sure.. I am a self taugt player and i started tennis late at 33 years old.I only watch online instructions and apply it on the wall.Sometimes i bring a video camera to record my stokes.Now im already a strong 4.0 all court player mainly because of that wall and im proud of it.

Another volley drill I started doing recently is getting on one side of it and walking down the wall while hitting either forward or backhand volleys. I do the same thing as well when alternating between the two. Helps me with both focus and coordination as I am hitting volleys while moving. Also is good at developing racket control / ball control as you have to place the ball really well to do this successfully.

Thanks for the great tips, Nick. I always use the wall before playing a match as I find it far superior to a mini tennis warm up. Your tips are more rigorous than what I've been typically doing, so I'm going to up my intensity and work for better improvement. One great drill you didn't mention is practicing drop shots. Since you can hit many such shots, both forehand and backhand, you get a LOT of practice in a short time and it's easy to gauge how effective your drop shots on the wall are by seeing how high over the net line they hit as well as how fast they're hitting the wall.
@IntuitiveTennis

George, dropshots work on the wall no doubt, however I like to keep the intensity up and the ball in play.
@Fernwald84

I guess I wasn't clear on how I practice the drop shot, Nick. As I'm close to the wall I drop shot the drop shot continuously. This isn't as intense, obviously, as doing groundstrokes or overheads but it demands at least as much concentration, perhaps more, and it is a great way to recover from an intense series without completely relaxing.

Excellent video.. Thanks! I have not played in a long time and a friend of mine called me to hit the other day.. What a disaster! I could not keep the ball in the court. I mean, I was really amazed at how little feel I had for any of the strokes... My forehand was absolutely horrible.. My slice backhand was the only shot I could direct to corners and keep inside the court. My serve was fairly decent... but it took quite a lot of focus mentally to not hit it on the net or long. I MUST go train on a tennis wall. Mind you that a used to play with a level 4 tennis instructor for years... This is why I was so disturbed by my poor performance. I love tennis.. I hate to lower my level to such degree... Wow... Back to training.

I just started a week ago to do this and I will include the hit that's in the corner to bounce off the wall. I play for half hour and yes, it's a great work out!

When I was 6 my father bought me and my brothers our first tennis racquets for Christmas. My brothers stopped after a while, but me and my father kept playing all day in a wall we have in the garden. After that I had already fallen in love with tennis, great memories

Honestly thank you for this I never really realized how to really get anything out of hitting on the wall. But now I know how to improve my volley and consistency which is what I need 100%. But I'm going to start trying to do this and same for the over head I'm always always struggling with them. Edit: I'm looking at your other videos and you have a new watcher

Gordon, it is high intensity and challenging, but if you do it in shorter intervals with more rest it might work for you.

Thanks so much , this is the most complete tennis video with all different ground strokes, good thing against the wall is that we can see how you hit it repeatedly much faster than against an opponent, no time wasted for viewers.

great tutorial! I did discover all these exercises by myself and one I also like is hitting forhand cross and backhand cross in response - simulating a rally with lots of running. When hitting simple forhands and backhands is too boring, this can heat up your practise even more

Thank you, thank you! My kid wants to play. I knew 1 thing about learning tennis: that you run outa gas quick, chasing balls all over the court. I made her go with me to the walls before the courts. To learn drills, I explained, but the real reason was to save me from complete exhaustion. She was embarrassed, even upset cuz everyone else was on the court except her loon dad. After showing her your instruction, we're going back, thanks to you! You make that look so easy.
