This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. I cannot give this movie enough praise.

How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda both have amazing stories of growth and discovery and adventure. But Kung Fu Panda's story takes a backseat to the humor of Jack Black, andHow to Train Your Dragon leans into the drama and beauty while still offering tons of funny moments.

Love 2 things: 1) when Hiccs warbles off with holding onto Toothless, toothless's tail sways into frame where the fin is broken off, showing they both need each other and lost a big part of themselves. 2) how quickly Astrid changes her mind because of Hiccs showing her the beautiful skies when they fly, so she becomes so interested what he does next, she follows him. Just simply adore how she is following him, knowing when she does, amazing things will happen.

Legendary stories like the HTTYD Trilogy, the Kung Fu Panda Trilogy, The Prince of Egypt, Shrek, Megamind, one of their newest movies Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. This is one of my favorite animated movies of all time. It's right up there with Up, Wall-e and Howl's Moving Castle. The imagery throughout, and especially during the final assault on the big dragon with fireball through the opened up cave, and the big dragon exploding in a fireball on impact with the ground. And that's all candy when it comes to the emotional beats and the true heart of the story. This movie brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it.

(long rambling comment follows, sorrynotsorry. I love this movie.) The moment with Toothless and Hiccup flying straight up into the clouds with the big dragon chasing them always gives me "How'd you deal with the icing problem?" vibes. This is obviously nothing like the first Iron Man movie, but the same...feeling? Random, but your shirt reminded me. Dreamworks consistently tells better animated stories than Disney, imo. You can argue animation styles all day, but the characters always seem to have more depth. (This has been my Risky Internet Opinion(tm) for the day) The way it uses music to support the emotional moments, like the exhilaration of their first flight through the rocks. It gives me chills ever time, and I must have seen this film a dozen times or more by now. In the theatre it was glorious, but the music helps it translate even to small screen. That theme we hear when they fly is a combination of Hiccup and Toothless' themes woven together. Neither of them can fly without the other. I absolutely love the dragon designs. They way they all move differently, and have personality. They aren't just made to look like epic mythical creatures, that would have felt out of place here, they feel like animals, they fit into the world. (Imagine how strange an elephant or a giraffe might look if nobody had ever seen one.) I have a soft spot for the gronkles, I think I'd want one of those :D Given the absolute lack of any kind of limb differences in most children's media outside of Captain Hook's hook and the occasional peg-legged pirate, seeing a character actually lose a limb during a story, especially the MAIN character, is something I don't recall seeing in anything else? (I may be wrong, I haven't watched every film ever made). THEN showing the people around him adapting to it, and making things accessible, rather than Hiccup being quietly excluded from his normal life, is pretty unique. Having it be Gobber, with his own multiple limb amputations, who builds his new leg is also just neat. Shoutout to Gobber too, while he is more of a comedic character, he isn't comedic because of his amputations, and in fact, when contrasted with Hiccup at the start of the film, is very much a central part of the village and society that we see Hiccup is "too different" for. And under the comedy he has several important roles, both in-world, and to the story. The village blacksmith (a physically demanding and vital job), running the dragon training for the young people in the village, and the chief's best friend and advisor (possibly one of the few close friends Stoic has as Chief? we only really see him giving orders to everyone else in the film, but Gobber actually talks to him, and not always what he wants to hear), as well as, from what we see, essentially helping Stoic raise Hiccup. You have to imagine he's been a big influence on how Hiccup sees the world, and how he sees physical disability. (Remembering that Hiccup's first instinct when he saw Toothless' lost tail was to build a prosthesis for him.) [/rambling] LOOK, I have a lot of thoughts and feels about this film okay? :p Great reaction!

The "Dragon" Trilogy is really the best of animation features. It soars above the others without diminishing them in any way, they're just that good. Your empathy and reaction to this beautiful storyline earned my subscription. The creators brilliantly based Toothless on a cross between a cat and a dog, so he was easy to love almost instantly. I truly believe in the intelligence of animals, I hate the killing and hunting of them, so this film harmonized with my feelings. As I type this, I have a squirrel looking at me through my window waiting for his almonds that I distribute daily. Every creature just wants to be loved, and they all have intelligence and emotions. We, as humans, are amazing at breeding fear into them ... we need to get better than that.

That said, I loved your reaction, and I certainly hope you'll be watching the whole trilogy. By the way, most of the dragons have cool names that kinda describe them, and then we have the gronkle.
