The moment after “You’re not my son” where Stoic nearly faints after he realizes what he just said is possibly the greatest part of the movie to me. They could’ve easily had him be angry and seething but instead they showed how he knew what he said was wrong and was absolutely floored he even said it. Such a great way to have the short temper moment but also show us how much he truly cares about his son deep down
@ecyor0 Жыл бұрын
And such a believable moment too - because so many of us have experienced a version of that where we've done or said something in a moment of anger, immediately regretted it, but now the choice has been made and we feel like we've locked ourselves into the path, even if theoretically all it would take is to immediately change our minds again.
@MarcusFrederiksen Жыл бұрын
Which also makes the moment where he apologises to Hiccup much better.
@Honk4frogs Жыл бұрын
I think stoic in general, throughout the movies and series, is written as a very believable leader and father. They always do a great job of showing how both sides conflict, why he makes the choices he makes, and the weight of both wanting to be a good parent and having to fight for the survival of his people.

I like to think the reason Night Furies have retractable teeth is because they'd carry their eggs/babies in their mouth over long distances instead of having permanent nesting sites like other dragons, and that's partly why they're so rarely found by humans. The second movie is okay, the third one is garbage, and the first is a masterpiece among Dreamwork's animations, among animation in general.
@Fireheart__ Жыл бұрын
@@Nigaki23333 fun fact, the climax of this wordless scene (the most iconic scene of the franchise really) where Toothless freezes for a second before pressing his nose to hiccup's hand was completely unplanned; when the crew was reviewing the scenes to make sure everything was ok and the animation was smooth the computer glitched for a second while toothless was moving his head forward and the scene froze before continuing. Spoiler for those who haven't seen this film yet: To clarify Janci is correct, Hiccup injured Toothless when he caught him with the net. Then Toothless tried to help Hiccup as he fell and his leg was the closest part of him that he could grasp onto. This film is fantastic for how it wasn't afraid to tackle the topic of disability acceptance. Originally they almost didn't keep the ending with Hiccup but the test audience said no keep it! Test audience you are the best. This film was phenomenal to begin with but it was escalated to a whole other level because of how it introduced a younger audience to injuries/ disabilities. Media tends to sometimes showcase disabilities in a negative light sadly, so I'm glad they reversed it for a younger audience. The fact that both of them caused each other's injuries makes it a much more powerful message. You can cause injuries to others with your actions through the words you say or through the actions you do, whether you intend to or not. However, what matters is how you address the situation afterward. They took accountability and both helped each other heal and accept the injuries that they each caused. Also, them tackling forgiveness and accountability when Toothless was with those around Hiccup and Toothless was powerful as well. Toothless finally started flying calming only after Astrid finally apologized. Then again at the end Toothless only showed them that he had caught Hiccup after Stoic apologized for how he had been acting. Once you finally took accountability for your actions and words, then they were finally rewarded. Also, when you were discussing the title: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events came to mind for me. That's the series title but the books each have individual titles

Definitely agree with what you said first, the score is absolutely amazing from start to finish. It should have won the Oscar that year. Test Drive never fails to give me chills.

The order to watch this series in is: The first movie, the legend of the bonenapper (an extra little ep on the DVD) then the book of dragon (which is just telling about the dragons in the book in greater detail) Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (a holiday Christmas special) Dreamworks Dragons (Season 1 & 2) Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers Dragons: Race to the Edge (6 Seaons in Total and the most complete in terms of world building and setting up to the second movie) Second movie Third movie And finally, to cap it all off, How to Train your Dragon: Homecoming (Another holiday special to end on a good note)

I honestly love this entire series. They really do an amazing job with it. One of the things that I love is that they actually age the characters very well as time moves on. So, 10/10, I hope you guys continue with it. Oh, also, there's a really great video essay that talks about the "test flight" song, and how it is built around Toothless' musical motif and Hiccup's musical motif. It is "How to Train Your Dragon is a MASTERCLASS in Theme Writing" by Charles Cornell. I recommend it so much because, one, you guys really strongly appreciated the music in the movie, and two, it took my own enjoyment of the movie's music and kicked it up several orders of magnitude. It really shows how much attention to detail went into these movies, and it really is just beautiful to see.

The animators took inspiration from their pets to animate Toothless, which is why he has both cat-like and dog-like mannerisms.

2:03 when I read the Inheritance Cycle, I pictured Eragon as a slightly altered version of Hiccup. It also took me a lot of mental energy to picture Saphira as the dragon on the first book’s cover instead of just Toothless.

30:25 if you noticed Toothless was treating Astrid the way she was treating Hiccup. Hiccup tried offering his hand to help and she slapped it away. Astrid tried using part of Toothless to climb up and he growled at her.

One of my favorite movies and the trilogy is definitely up there too as one of the best. It has a compelling story, great characters, masterful production, and I always get emotional no matter how many times I rewatch it; something that the movie industry is lacking these days. I wish I could watch this again in theatres, truly a once in a lifetime experience, especially when the music resonates at peak quality.

imo the Test Drive scene is one of the best synergies of music, animation, character, and story ever put to screen
@joevictor53 Жыл бұрын
Oh my God! Is this actually happening? I hope they do the whole series. And Kung Fu Panda as well Calvin says the reveal at 8:58 was good. That was actually a mistake. The eye was supposed to be closed by there was an animation error where it opened and they thought it was much better that way. Also when Aaron says Toothless would suddenly eat Hiccup's hand in the scene where they become friends, that's literally what I thought would happen when I first saw this moment in the trailers. That's the type of humour Dreamworks was known for and I skipped this movie for the longest time because I thought it was that type of dumb humour movie with just jokes and nothing more in it.
