I just had my first three goats deliver and needed this video. Mine were not raised very tame, we have worked to get them to trust and allow us to pet them. They delivered with very little of our help and I can’t wait to get to milking. It has all been baby steps for the last year. I did get one of them on the stand and milked a little but I’ll need hobbles because she let me before starting the milk dance 😂 the milk does taste amazing! Edit: we got one boy from the first timer, a boy and a girl from her mama and a girl and boy from her aunt. Nilpert, Marley, Donna, Janis and Jimmy. This is my first year kidding with my 4 does. I have learned so much from you! Your video's are informative and to the point. You have a great teaching style. I have learned what to expect during labor and delivery, how to give vaccinations, how to do blood testing, how to disbud, tattoo and castrate. I have accomplished up through disbudding at this point and will be rewatching the videos as I tattoo and castrate in the coming months. I use smaller milking pan then pour that into a larger pan with a lid. I just DO NOT trust my goats to not kick the pan. I've had milk ruined when a goat kicked it over or stuck their foot in it. That is much more stressful to me than carrying two milk pans out there. First fresheners can be very stressful. 😔😥

This was really good! Routine, straps, & getting them familiar with being handled (in hopes they won't need straps) are what I caught from you. Oh Lord help me. It's been so cold & my doe is due in Feb, she hasnt been handled & its her first kidding. It's very cold here in Wyoming at that time so I'm setting up a kidding pen in the shop. I just hope everything goes smooth.

I hope so too!! I will say, in many cases, when they go into labor is a great time to bond. Not always but in many cases. If you just sit with her in the breeding stall she may want your attention when she's in labor. I have a couple goats that dont like to be messed with but when labor hits is a different story. They act like we are best friends :). Good luck!!

In the real world we wouldn't have all this grain to feed them every day. Reality is thou, if you give them even a tsp of treat..corn..wheat ECT in your hand they will even come to that. Seriously, I didn't know they would still come for a tsp of treat but they still do. Amazing.

Thanks for this, I just got a couple does in milk who are not used to being milked and one of them is a real pain on the stand, I made some tethers out of baling twine but your wide rope ones would be a major improvement, I'll have to get some to make mine more comfortable. I've only had her a week and felt bad still tying her, but now I won't feel bad about it anymore!

Thanks for sharing this, I was thinking of getting the goats familiar with a milk stand and touching in the areas you showed from the time they were little. I just have not seen anyone else do it. I plan on getting the males familiar as well so I can easily trim their hooves and give them shots easily. I am looking to get goats in about a year and am educating my self this year.

Mine has only one baby and I had to milk the other side 3 x already. She’s crazy. I don’t have a milk stand yet, so I tied her to the fence and got someone to help me. He was wore out from holding her until I was done milking lol

Oh man!! Try taping the one side the kid is favoring and she'll choose the other side. Make sure to monitor both sides ever 12 hours but that might encourage the baby to drink from both sides :)

Could you offer some tips on how to train some does to a lead and the stand when they are pretty much wild? We purchased two does who are a year old and are supposed to be bred. The woman we got them from pretty much never handled them. I have worked daily to get them more used to me. They will eat out of my hand and let me pet just their backs even when they are not eating now. Last night I tried to slip a collar on the friendliest of the two when she was eating, and it did not go well. Today she still remembers and shies away from me a bit. Is it best just to hold her and get the collar on and get it done? I have a few months left before they would kid if they are in fact pregnant, but I need to find a way to start getting them trained and more tame now.

You need to spend time in a small area with them first. If they are young it will be easier for them to come around. Skidish goats are hard to break from that in my experience. Especially if they are no longer kids. Give treats and spend lots of time around them. Hopefully they will come around. That being said, if you need to do something with them, put a collar on, any care, just do it!

Yes, what you need I call belly board. After the goats is on the stand eating with legs strapped. A board that goes under the belly and holds them up. It has to be removable. Hope that helps! -Derek from somewhere in the America

We have tried all the fancy grain mixtures and nothing has worked better for is than giving more alfalfa hay and pellets. So all they get on the stand is protein pellets mixed with a little cracked corn.

Hello! So glad our channel provides education for you! Breeding does live about 12 years, however some longer, some shorter. Typically 12 years old and pass during kidding issues. A buck is about 8 years old if he is a breeding buck. They have stressful lifes with all those hormones and fighting. A wether can live 15 years. As far as your small doe, I couldn't say without seeing her. Small stature won't matter too much if she is wide in stature from thurl to thurl. If she is really small I wouldn't risk it. However, I can't really say without seeing her.

My first doe I got while she was in milk, she would kick the pail and move all around in an attempt to not be milked, she never would let me milk her with out kicking and fighting. we ended up selling her as a pet to a friend (she wouldn't let the other goats eat). the next one we also got while in milk she hated it (especially at first) but let me do as long as there was still food, the third one we got as a 10 month old and I started work with her before we bred her and now she's couldn't care less.

Yes!! Working with them young helps so much. I use leg straps for the ones that want to be difficult. If they are mean to the herd, they get sold!

No. They know they are about to be milked and get a treat and dont have an issue when I milk them. If they are on the stand for an extended amount of Tim, like hoove trimming or shaving, they will :). No worries then though.

Well thank you for watching :). Are you bumping your girls? That should drop any milk they are "holding back." Also, the udder will stay meaty and not feel like it is draining out completely when you first start to milk them after kidding. They need to fill and empty for a couple weeks straight before the udder fills emptied. Also, some does get udder tension and needs massaged out. Will habe the same feeling. We have tried many grain mixtures but for us, nothing is better than alfalfa. If you want to up their milk, up their alfalfa. Even add in alfalfa pellets. We feed both.

We’ve been milking for 2 months OAD once the babies are weaned we’ll milk twice a day! I was really happy to hear about the grain! Cause we are using a pretty extensive feeding program and it’s killing my wallet. So we may just start weaning them off all this stuff and try like you say. We are on Milk Test id just be worried their BF or Protein levels will drop.

If you have been milking 2 months, twice a day, they are probably as milked out as they will get. Potentially it's genetic for your girls. I would do the massage technique for a week and see if it changes. I have a doe that get it bad. Just take your fist and role it around the udder to loosen that tissue up. Lol.
