Using blocks or some sort of portable handle with a wide flat surface can help protect your CMC and MCP joints when transfering to and from harder surfaces (bed can be forgiving) .

My bed is the height of my chair, but I always feel like I'm not close enough. It's still a struggle. This video is very clear though.
