Very good site you have here , and although I model in N scale ,I find your channel extremely helpful and enjoyable to watch.I`m going to be doing this exact thing on my layout expansion ,where I will have several transitions. Great job !! Subscribed Paul in CANADA

Thanks for the comment. It is "easy" and it also takes a while (like half an hour off camera) to get an acceptable result...Harold

Pretty good idea. I use Kato track, N scale, I wonder if I removed some of the underlying foam if I would get the same effect. Thanks for sharing.

Vinny...nice to hear from you. This would be even easier in N scale...you'd have to do virtually nothing...Harold

I noticed several things in the video that I would liem to discuss. If doing HO, you can buy some N scale cork or some cork sheeting at home improvement or craft stores and cut them into short sections and that will help eliminate alot of time sanding. Then where the N scale cork goes to the table top to represent the sub roadbed or ground. Plastic shims glued together and then sanded. I have done this method on my layout that I am building. On the wood shim method, you sand it to get the smooth transition and then when sanding is completed, you paint it with several coats of good primer and then applying ballast is not a moisture problem. Same as sanding then painting cork roadbed. Other ways I have done this transition is plastic shims and masking tape. This method was done on my N scale layout and worked well for me as well. I dont remember if I painted over it or not to seal it prior to ballast application. I made several transitions on my N scale over a several year spread and haven't had any issues. Just thought I would share my methods with you.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing a different method with others viewing this video. Yes...there are many ways to do this some of which can be seen in other comments below. However it is done, it presents a more realistic appearance to sidings and industrial spurs. So, viewers, choose one of the many available methods or try your own...Harold

Good video. I ran into a difficulty with steam engines having a low front metal pilot contacting both rails shorting across the two rails; have not developed a solution as yet: lengthening the slope, insulating the bottom of the pilot, changing to a non-conductive pilot, etc. Another option is using shims for household door frames, available at Home Depot, mine are the longer ones (12"?).

Thanks for the comment. You're correct. The shorter the transition, the steeper the grade will be causing the problem that you experienced. With something longer like the door frame shims or a longer piece of cork, you're less likely to have the problem...Harold

I use a method where I lay the track and then using a straight edge put some shims under the track. Then I fill in under the track with play sand, wet and glue just like you would glue Ballast, and the rack is laid without any problems. fast and cheep...

Thanks for the comment. Many ways to do this but be careful with the shims. If they're wood, they could swell when using the wet materials...Harold

Thanks for your comment. I'm sure you're right there are many ways to do this. I just chose to show the way that I have done it in the past...Harold

I laugh because i watch a lot of videos and famous words. "Just sand it down" . Nobody tells you what grit sandpaper they are using.
