How far in advance do you start these seeds? Love the racks. First year growing squash and it is growing like crazy. Buried my poor brussels sprout plants. Oh I thought I could enter plant them because the brussels sprouts grow up and the vines for the squash grow on the ground but that did not work out. I’m running out of room to put the vines LOL I love the rack idea I’m gonna go see if I can institute some racks out there now. Fantastic idea thank you so much.

How deep do you set the plants? Extra deep like tomatoes or just the base at original container soil level?

Good question. I set them up to there first set of leaves. If they are leggy you can bury in like tomatoes as they will root out, but most of the time to the first set of leaves is great.

I'm afraid my zucchini plants are too close to each other. Should I transport plant them to give them more space or should I just leave it? You're only like 6 to 8 inches apart and they have been growing in the ground for three weeks three to four weeks

Do you ever thin to one plant? I started my first garden this year and my big issue is over planting lol... if you plant in a container should you do one or two plants?

Totally depends on the veggie and how long, wide, and deep it is. Carrots, you can easily plant more than one plant in a container. Leave a 1/2 to inch space between plants.

Generally, you want one vining plant per container. Sometimes two if using a 25gallon+ size container. Squash, indeterminate tomato, melon, cucumber, beans, pumpkin etc will grow to be feet wide (3-4ft or more) so you'd just want one, maybe two. Carrots, root vegetable, Lettuce, leafy greens, herb and pepper can usually do multiple if you're using a 7gal+ sized container. I have two pepper in one and a bush bean+marigold in another 7gal grow bag.

question deer have eaten the top leaves off squash and pumpkins . plants have blooms and I was wondering if I needed to replant or will the blooms produce squash. thanks so much for sharing your garden next year we are going to do black plastic I hope it will help with weeding too

Nancy Morrow I am not sure I totally understand your question so if you don't mind clarifying for me that would be great. So I think I understand that the deer have eaten the top leaves of your squash and pumpkin plants. how much damage did they do? could you explain a little more about the flowers?

sorry about being so vague. our squash plants have blooms but the deer have eaten the leaves off the plants . I was wondering that even if the leaves have been eaten and the blooms are still ok . will the squash still produce fruit with little to no leaves since it still has the blooms I hope this makes better sense.

Nancy Morrow awe i understand now. So the deer have dined on your poor sqaush leaves and left the blossoms. Good establish squash plants can take a beating. So what i would do is water all plants daily unless it rains to make sure.they never dry out until i see some new leaves growing again. Even withoit leaves to a short peroid of time the plant still.can produce fruit. But if the deer keep coming back you may need to take some more action like buy some deer fencing. Here in Alberta Canada i can go to Homedepot and get 7 feet by 100 feet for 70 bucks. i would put this all around the squash. You can reuse this fencing. I am very lucky to have a great Pyrenees that keeps away the predators and the herbaviors that like to dine on the garden. i am not sure where you live but a guard dog could be an idea too.
