Like many perennials, the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) tolerates transplanting well.
Time of Year
You can transplant a ZZ plant any time of year, but late fall and early winter is best; transplanting in summer can cause unnecessary stress on the plant. Early spring is also a suitable time to move plants. If you can't wait until the cool season to transplant, pick an overcast day to move your ZZ plant or transplant it early in the morning or late in the evening.
Why Transplant
Reasons for transplanting a ZZ plant include changes in garden design and the need to move a stressed plant into a better growing location. ZZ plants grow best in partial to full shade, and they need good drainage. If your plant shows stress in a sunny spot or a waterlogged area, dig it up and move it to a more suitable location in the garden.
Digging
ZZ plants have rhizomes -- large fleshy storage roots. To transplant a ZZ plant, use a garden fork to dig out the rhizomes, digging carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Lift the shrub from the base rather than the stalk. Carrying the shrub around by the fleshy stalk can damage the plant. Ideally, you should replant right away, but if you have to suspend transplanting for a few days, keep the rhizome moist and shaded.
Replanting
Dig a new hole to the same depth as the plant was previously growing. Lower the ZZ plant into the hole and position the base of the stalk level with the soil line. Refill the planting hole using the same soil you removed during digging. Follow up right after transplanting with a thorough soaking.
