ZZ - Akebono!!! What a beauty. This is a jumbo ZZ plant. If ever, I find one of these in a plant store, I'm getting it. How easy it is to look after in Leca, by pouring solution into a shallow reservoir. Love the time lapse. Look forward to seeing more progress of this plant in the future. Great video, very informative!!!! 💚

Hello. Just love a ZZ and that is once large plant. Thanks for the post. A raven is my next purchase although I need to get say goodbye to some plants first. I have never yet been successful in transferring from soil to Leca with the roots. So now I cut them all off and start from scratch. It's a great way with ZZ and the snake plant.

You don't need a grow tent. I put mine in there for the light so if it has good light you should be ok.

If your LECA or Pon runs out of the drainage holes, there are a couple solutions you can try. One is to use PLASTIC (not metal) screening or mesh to create a ‘basket’ in the container, to hold-in the substrate & still filter the water out the holes, while allowing the necessary aeration. You can also use coffee filters to block the large holes. That also works best in a setup where the reservoir is allowed to dry periodically. But, by the time the paper dissolves, the substrate will likely be “fused” together sufficiently with plant roots & it won’t run out anymore 😃 I’ve also used small chunks of lava rock to block the large drainage holes. It’s porous & will still aid in the wicking process of semi-hydro. You can use any lava rock pieces, even from the garden or outside, I’d just quickly douse them in boiling water and/or hydrogen peroxide first, to deodorize it & kill any eggs or anything.
@TheLecaQueen10 ай бұрын
Thanks again. In the past I have tried all the above, I am just too lazy to do it now! Because as you said, once the roots get in there, it all becomes one big mass! It is great for people to know though. I should mention them more. Heck maybe I should do a video about it!

Hi. I LOVE watching your videos as they have helped me in my plant journey. Can I ask where you get your various sizes of clear pots with holes in them, as well as the planters you put them into when using leca, etc.?
@TheLecaQueen9 ай бұрын
Hello, I get the clear pots from my local Bunnings here in Australia and make the holes myself.
@cookie8847610 ай бұрын
Where do you get your clear net pots? I've been looking at deli containers, but I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of container choices and sizes 😅 thank you for your amazing videos 🥰 I will be converting a lot of plants in the near future to leca, and your videos have been wonderful ❤
@erikm837210 ай бұрын
The amount of choices is a good thing! I’m constantly saving yogurt containers & things of that nature because I can never find nursery pots of that size. I’m sure they exist but I’m not one to purchase plastic pots. I sterilize and reuse the ones that have plants in them. But yogurt containers and deli cups are great, as they’re bigger than “small”, but not quite “medium” or large. The size you get can vary, and it does depend on the actual plant in question. It also depends on how big the plants will GROW… keep in mind how a plant looks when it’s matured. Lots of people on KZbin videos will mess with the roots of their semi hydro plants, to show viewers the root growth, so I understand… and I suppose that’s fine, but I don’t do that. Once I transfer a plant or repot something, I want to be sure it can grow comfortably and fill-in for as LONG as possible. I.E., not to small of a pot, but not too big as to overwhelm it or cause rot. Bigger container = more hydrated substrate, longer drying time. Smaller container = quicker aeration, less substrate, sooner need to repot. Just depends. Of course, we have no way of knowing how quickly a plant will fill-in a pot. But as far as pulling the plant out, looking at the roots, in general, plant roots want to be left alone. So a medium size pot is good. Something 2-3x the size of the root ball.
@cookie8847610 ай бұрын
@@erikm8372 thank you for this response! I guess clear plastic isn't necessary, but I guess if I'm transferring initially from soil to leca I want to keep an eye on the roots to make sure it's taking well. I didn't even think about reusing old/used plastic containers. How eco-friendly of me

@thelecaqueen does the clear pit have to have the holes all on the sides or will a clear pot with regular drainage holes work?
@TheLecaQueen10 ай бұрын
Regular drainage holes will work. I prefer to have holes in the sides to provide added ventilation for the roots. I see it as an added bonus!

Just wondering, do you ever have any problem with fungus gnats when using Leca?
@marygatdula274410 ай бұрын
I don't have any problems with the gnats. But I did once when I bought some cheap spagnum moss that was absolutely infested with the buggers! Took a bit to get rid of them, but the leca does not harbor them! It just doesn't provide the environment they can live in.

LOL, I was just looking at my ZZ and said you are about to go into LECA, opened youTube and saw your video. I am a new plant mom, sorta, and I have transitioned about 13/14 plants into LECA. I have watched alot of your videos! I was good up to the grow tent. Do you think it is possible to be successful without the grow tent?
@TheLecaQueen10 ай бұрын
Yes indeed. This is the first of my ZZs to actually go in the grow tent. I put it there cause it is variegated and big and was a bit nervous, but my other 5 ZZ plant transitions have gone perfectly without the grow tent.

i've had to break a nice pot or two when re-potting outside pot plants. sometimes it's easier for plant and for myself. in future i plan to avoid pots that have any taper or lip in the wrong direction at top of pot. i've cut away cheap plastic pots, rather than bashing roots, and sometimes also trim badly tangled roots. more roots will grow and plants recover. plants doing too well can be as much of a problem as not doing well. i've thrown away some plants that grow too much.
